Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the CCSE exam?
The CCSE test contains 25 closed-answer questions spread across five tasks. Most are multiple-choice with three options, and three questions in Task 2 are true/false statements. Candidates have 45 minutes to complete the test. All questions are drawn from the official Instituto Cervantes CCSE preparation manual, which contains around 300 public items.
What is the passing score for the CCSE test?
You must answer at least 15 of the 25 questions correctly to pass the CCSE, a pass mark of 60%. Each correct answer is worth one point and wrong answers are not penalised. If you score 14 or fewer you receive a fail result, but the EUR 85 registration fee covers a second attempt within 18 months.
How much does the CCSE exam cost?
The CCSE registration fee is EUR 85, the same at all accredited examination centres. This fee covers two attempts: if you fail or are absent on the first sitting, you can resit at no extra cost within 18 months. Payment is made online by credit card or PayPal through the Instituto Cervantes examination website.
Who needs to take the CCSE exam?
The CCSE is one of the requirements for acquiring Spanish nationality by residence, and for nationality applications by Sephardic Jews of Spanish origin. Applicants under 18 years of age and people with judicially modified capacity are exempt. From Spanish-speaking countries the language test (DELE A2) is waived, but the CCSE civics test is still generally required.
How often is the CCSE exam held?
The CCSE is administered on the last Thursday of almost every month, with no sittings in August or December. In 2026 the sittings in Spain run from January through November, at more than 200 accredited examination centres recognised by the Instituto Cervantes. You should register before the published deadline for each sitting.
How long is a CCSE pass valid?
A CCSE pass is valid for four years from the date of issue. You must submit your Spanish nationality application before that period expires. The DELE A2 Spanish language certificate, which many applicants also need, does not expire.
