1On modern Danish nautical charts covering the North Sea, Kattegat, and the Danish straits, what vertical reference level is standardly used as the chart sounding datum (søkortnul)?
2When converting a steering compass course (styret kurs, sk) into a true course (retvisende kurs, rv), what is the correct algebraic sequence for applying deviation (dev) and magnetic variation (misvisning, mv)?
3A coastal vessel intends to track a true course (rv) of 082° through the Kattegat. The chart indicates a local magnetic variation of 4° East, and the vessel's deviation table indicates a deviation of 2° West on this heading. Disregarding current and leeway, what compass course (sk) should the helmsman steer?
4A vessel departs a waypoint off Grenaa at 14:15 steaming at a steady speed through the water of 11.4 knots. Assuming negligible current and wind, what distance has the vessel run by 15:45?
5A vessel is steering an intended true track of 090° across the Skagerrak. A strong northerly wind produces an estimated leeway (afdrift) of 5°. To counteract this wind and maintain the track over the ground in the absence of current, what true heading must the vessel steer?
6A coastal vessel wishes to make good a course over the ground (kurs over grunden, COG) of 180° true off the West Coast of Jutland at a ship speed through the water of 10.0 knots. A coastal tidal stream is setting 090° true at 2.0 knots. What true course through the water (kurs gennem vandet, CTW) must be steered?
7While entering a Danish fairway, the navigator observes two charted leading light beacons in transit (overét-linje) with a charted true alignment bearing of 244°. The local variation is 3° East. At the exact moment of alignment, the steering compass reads 243°. What is the magnetic compass deviation on this ship heading?
8According to the IALA Maritime Buoyage System (Region A) used in Danish waters, what topmark and colour scheme identify an Isolated Danger Mark (isoleret fareafmærkning)?
9When fixing a vessel's position using simultaneous visual bearings of two charted coastal landmarks (krydspejling), what angle of intersection between the position lines provides the highest geometric accuracy?
10A navigator takes a single visual bearing of an isolated lighthouse at 10:00 and another bearing of the same lighthouse at 10:30 after steaming a known course and distance. What chartwork procedure is used to establish the vessel's 10:30 position?
About the Kystskippereksamen Exam
Kystskippereksamen is the current 30-ECTS Danish coastal-skipping education under BEK nr. 1325 af 17/12/2012. It covers the STCW II/3 functions required for service on ships below 500 GT in coastal trade and is listed by Søfartsstyrelsen as the education leading first to Styrmand af 4. grad and ultimately Kystskipper. Danish is the default assessment language for Danish-delivered programmes, subject to the institution's permitted alternatives. This English MCQ bank preserves Danish terms but is not an official translation or a substitute for chartwork, oral, simulator, or practical performance.
Assessment
The 30-ECTS programme covers navigation and watchkeeping, meteorology, stability, basic machinery for ships below 750 kW, economics, maritime law and environment, entrepreneurship, and prescribed ECDIS, ROC, firefighting, survival-craft, security, medical-care-B, and motor-operation competencies.
Time Limit
The education is normed to 0.5 year and must normally be completed within 1.5 years; individual assessment durations vary by institution
Passing Score
02 where the Danish 7-point scale is used, or pass where an assessment uses pass/fail; current study rules control
Exam Fee
Assessment is part of the programme; the current Søfartsstyrelsen certificate-of-competency application fee is DKK 855 (Søfartsstyrelsen (Danish Maritime Authority))

Kystskippereksamen Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What certificate does passing Kystskippereksamen grant?
Passing Kystskippereksamen satisfies the educational requirement for obtaining a Danish Sønæringsbevis as Styrmand af 4. grad / Kystskipper, permitting service as navigator on commercial vessels up to 500 GT in near-coastal trade (nærfart), and master upon completing required sea service.
Where is the official examination conducted?
The examination is conducted under the authority of Søfartsstyrelsen at accredited Danish maritime academies, including MARTEC in Frederikshavn/Skagen and Marstal Navigationsskole on Ærø.
In what language is the official examination administered?
Danish is the default under the general maritime examination order for a Danish-delivered programme; an institution may permit another language in specified circumstances. This English MCQ bank is a study adaptation, not an official translation or format simulation.
What are the sea service (fartstid) requirements to obtain the Sønæringsbevis?
BEK nr. 1325 has route-specific requirements, including 12, 15, or 18 months for several common prior-training routes and a legacy 36-month route. It also requires valid unrestricted medical fitness, lookout fitness, a watchkeeping certificate, and the prescribed training record. Later certificate privileges have their own current service requirements.
What is the passing standard under the Danish grading system?
A grade of 02 is passing where the 7-point scale is used; pass/fail assessments require a pass. The institution's current study rules specify the form, weighting, and grading of each assessment.
