About the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Visual Arts Exam
Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Kunst is the state Visual Arts examination for the Allgemeine Hochschulreife. Kunst is a Wahlpflichtfach — students take either Kunst or Musik continuously through the gymnasiale Oberstufe — and can additionally be chosen as one of the five Abiturprüfungsfächer, examined under §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung as a besondere Fachprüfung with both a written and a practical (gestalterisch-praktischer) part. Its content follows the Fachlehrplan Kunst Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022): four Kurse running from images and identity, through communication in artistic and media worlds, everyday culture and design, to presentation in public space — building on Einführungsphase work on Bildzitat, Bildbetrachtung and Abstraktion. This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation designed to build and check factual command of the analytical, art-historical and theoretical content. It is not a simulation of the official exam, which is written in German, combines source- and image-based written analysis with a separate practical studio task, and is not covered by MCQ practice alone.

Assessment
Kunst can be taken as a written Wahlpflicht-Prüfungsfach, normally at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau since Kunst is a Wahlpflichtfach rather than a Kern- or Profilfach at most Gymnasien, or — at Gymnasien with an approved inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt Kunst — as a Profilfach examined at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau. Per §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung, choosing Kunst as a Prüfungsfach replaces the ordinary written exam with a besondere Fachprüfung that includes both a written part and a practical part, following the KMK's Einheitliche Prüfungsanforderungen (EPA) Bildende Kunst (1.12.1989, in der jeweils geltenden Fassung); the practical part is completed by a separately scheduled deadline (RdErl. 'Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Abiturprüfung', Nummer 5.3). Content is drawn from the Fachlehrplan Kunst Gymnasium's four Kurse: Bilder und Bildwelten als Spiegel des Menschen; Kommunikation in künstlerischen und medialen Welten; Individuelle Alltagskultur und gestaltete Umwelt; and Gestaltung und Präsentation in öffentlichen Räumen. This 100-question bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation of that theoretical and analytical content only — it does not reproduce the German-language written/practical Fachprüfung format and is not a substitute for practical studio coursework.
Time Limit
Written Prüfungsfächer outside the Bildungsstandard core subjects ('weitere Prüfungsfächer', the band Kunst falls into) generally run to approximately 300 minutes at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau and approximately 210 minutes at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau, plus roughly 30 minutes of Auswahlzeit, under the annually re-issued RdErl. 'Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Abiturprüfung' (Nummer 7.4). As a besondere Fachprüfung under §20 Abs. 4, Kunst additionally includes a practical part completed separately by a further deadline set each year (RdErl. Nummer 5.3), so the exact split between the written and practical components should be confirmed with your school. In the 2026 main session the central written date for Kunst, grouped with Musik and Sport at Gymnasien with the relevant inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt, was Friday 17 April 2026; mündliche Prüfungen began 11 May 2026 and Zeugnisse were issued by 3 July 2026.
Passing Score
Subject performance is reported on the 0–15 Punkte scale (Note 1 = 15–13 Punkte, Note 6 = 0 Punkte). The Gesamtqualifikation requires at least 200 of a possible 600 Punkte in Block I from the Kurshalbjahresergebnisse (§38 Oberstufenverordnung) and at least 100 of a possible 300 Punkte in Block II from the five Prüfungsfächer/-elemente in vierfacher Wertung (§39), with no element scored 0, at least 4 Punkte in each element and at least 20 Punkte in vierfacher Wertung in three or more elements including one auf erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau. The 900-point maximum is converted to the Abitur-Durchschnittsnote via the national KMK table.
Exam / Certification Fees
No exam fee for regular enrolled school candidates; the Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt. External and Nichtschüler routes are handled by the Landesschulamt and do not carry a published Kunst-specific fee.

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Visual Arts: Suggested Study Strategy
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the official Sachsen-Anhalt Kunst Abitur exam multiple-choice?
No. Under §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung, Kunst is examined as a besondere Fachprüfung with both a German-language written part and a separate practical (gestalterisch-praktischer) part, based on the KMK's Einheitliche Prüfungsanforderungen (EPA) Bildende Kunst. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation of the analytical and theoretical content, not a simulation of that format.
Does this bank prepare me for the practical part of the exam?
No. This bank builds and checks the analytical, art-historical and theoretical knowledge base that also underpins the written part of the Fachprüfung. It is not a substitute for the practical, gestalterisch-praktischer component, which requires hands-on studio practice, technique and portfolio work developed in class under teacher supervision.
Why are the questions in English when the exam is in German?
This bank is a study aid for building factual command of the Fachlehrplan content in English. German proper nouns and official terms — Bildzitat, Kunstbegriff, Gefüge, Oberstufenverordnung and so on — are preserved exactly as used in the curriculum, so you can carry the vocabulary straight into German-language revision.
Which content does the exam cover?
The Fachlehrplan Kunst Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022) organises the Qualifikationsphase into four Kurse: Bilder und Bildwelten als Spiegel des Menschen (identity and the changing Kunstbegriff), Kommunikation in künstlerischen und medialen Welten (image functions, analogue/digital media), Individuelle Alltagskultur und gestaltete Umwelt (design and architecture), and Gestaltung und Präsentation in öffentlichen Räumen (posters, exhibitions, Corporate Design). Einführungsphase content on Bildzitat, methods of Bildbetrachtung and Abstraktion feeds directly into that work.
How long is the written part of the exam?
Kunst is a 'weiteres Prüfungsfach' under the annual RdErl. 'Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Abiturprüfung': typically around 300 minutes at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau and around 210 minutes at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau, plus roughly 30 minutes of Auswahlzeit. As a besondere Fachprüfung, the practical part is completed by a separately scheduled deadline, so check the current Erlass through your school or the Bildungsserver for the exact split.
Is Kunst compulsory in the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur?
Kunst is a Wahlpflichtfach: students must continuously take either Kunst or Musik, with at least two Kurshalbjahresergebnisse required in Block I under §38 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 of the Oberstufenverordnung. Whether you also sit it as one of your five Abiturprüfungsfächer — and at grundlegendem or, at a Kunst-Schwerpunktschule, erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau — is a matter of your individual Prüfungsfach combination.
When was the exam held in 2026?
In the 2026 main session the written/central Kunst Fachprüfung date was Friday 17 April 2026, grouped with Musik and Sport at Gymnasien with the relevant inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt. Mündliche Prüfungen began on 11 May 2026 and Zeugnisse were issued by 3 July 2026, with roughly 5,600 candidates sitting the Abitur across Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen, Gemeinschaftsschulen mit gymnasialer Oberstufe, berufliche Gymnasien, Freie Waldorfschulen and Schulen des zweiten Bildungsweges.
Is there an exam fee?
No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt and regular enrolled school candidates pay no fee. Nichtschüler and second-chance routes are administered by the Landesschulamt and have no published Kunst-specific fee.
