1According to the Fachlehrplan Englisch Gymnasium Sachsen-Anhalt, the Qualifikationsphase Themenfeld 'The Individual and Society' explicitly pairs 'questions of identity' with which contrast?
A.conformity versus individualism
B.urban versus rural living
C.tradition versus modernity
D.youth versus old age
Explanation: The Fachlehrplan Englisch Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022) lists 'ambitions and obstacles' and 'conformity vs. individualism' as the named sub-aspects of 'questions of identity' under this Themenfeld, alongside 'chances and challenges for society' (ethnic, cultural and social diversity, gender issues).
2Which second contrasting pair does the Fachlehrplan list, together with 'conformity vs. individualism', under 'questions of identity' in The Individual and Society?
A.ambitions and obstacles
B.victory and defeat
C.wealth and poverty
D.love and duty
Explanation: The Fachlehrplan names 'ambitions and obstacles' as the first bullet point under 'questions of identity', immediately followed by 'conformity vs. individualism'.
3Under 'chances and challenges for society' in The Individual and Society, the Fachlehrplan names diversity along which three dimensions, plus a separate fourth issue?
A.ethnic, cultural and social diversity, and gender issues
B.religious, linguistic and generational diversity, and class issues
C.political, economic and regional diversity, and disability issues
D.racial, religious and geographic diversity, and age issues
Explanation: The Fachlehrplan's exact wording for 'chances and challenges for society' is 'ethnic, cultural and social diversity, gender issues' — these four terms appear together as the defining content of that bullet point.
4In an English essay about identity, a student who values 'conformity' over 'individualism' would most likely argue that...
A.it is better to follow the norms and expectations of one's social group
B.personal ambition should always override group expectations
C.one's ethnic background determines identity entirely
D.gender roles are irrelevant to identity
Explanation: Conformity means adjusting one's behaviour and beliefs to match group norms and expectations — the opposite pole from individualism, which emphasises self-directed, distinctive choices even against group pressure.
5Read the short excerpt: 'Ever since she moved to the city, Maya felt torn between the expectations of her family and her own wish to study art instead of law.' Which Themenfeld and sub-aspect does this excerpt best illustrate?
A.The Individual and Society — questions of identity: ambitions and obstacles
B.The World of Work — changes in the world of work
C.The Media — the impact of the media on the individual and society
D.Global Chances and Challenges — international relations
Explanation: Maya's personal ambition (studying art) conflicting with family expectations (an obstacle) is a direct illustration of 'questions of identity: ambitions and obstacles' under The Individual and Society.
6Which classroom discussion topic would fall under 'gender issues' as named in the Themenfeld The Individual and Society?
A.debating whether traditional gender roles restrict individual choice
B.comparing British and American spelling conventions
C.analysing automation's effect on factory jobs
D.discussing the causes of the Vietnam War
Explanation: Gender roles and how they enable or restrict individual choice is a textbook example of the 'gender issues' bullet point under 'chances and challenges for society' in The Individual and Society.
7The Fachlehrplan uses the phrase 'chances and challenges' twice: once inside The Individual and Society, and once as its own Themenfeld, Global Chances and Challenges. What is the key difference in focus between the two?
A.The Individual and Society's 'chances and challenges' concerns diversity within a society, while Global Chances and Challenges concerns sustainability, international relations and scientific-technological progress worldwide
B.There is no real difference; both refer to exactly the same content
C.The Individual and Society covers economics only, while Global Chances and Challenges covers only ecology
D.The Individual and Society is examined only orally, while Global Chances and Challenges is examined only in writing
Explanation: The Individual and Society's 'chances and challenges for society' bullet point is about ethnic, cultural and social diversity and gender issues within a society, whereas the separate Themenfeld Global Chances and Challenges covers sustainability, international relations and the societal impact of scientific and technological progress on a worldwide scale.
8In sociocultural discussions of Anglophone societies, 'individualism' is most commonly associated with the idea that...
A.personal autonomy and self-reliance take precedence over group conformity
B.the community's needs always outweigh personal wishes
C.identity is fixed at birth and cannot change
D.only economic status defines a person's identity
Explanation: Individualism prizes personal autonomy, self-reliance and the pursuit of one's own goals over automatic deference to group norms — the direct opposite of conformity.
9In the phrase 'ambitions and obstacles' from the Themenfeld The Individual and Society, what does 'obstacle' mean?
A.something that blocks or hinders progress toward a goal
B.a strong desire to achieve something
C.a formal ceremony marking adulthood
D.a type of persuasive essay
Explanation: An 'obstacle' is something that stands in the way of achieving a goal — the natural counterpart to 'ambition', a strong desire to achieve that goal.
10Which sentence uses 'ambition' correctly in the sense intended by the Themenfeld The Individual and Society?
A.Her ambition was to become a human-rights lawyer, despite her family's doubts.
B.The ambition closed early because of the storm.
C.He painted the ambition a bright shade of blue.
D.The ambition weighed exactly two kilograms.
Explanation: 'Ambition' means a strong desire to achieve a particular goal; the sentence about becoming a human-rights lawyer correctly uses it to describe someone's career aspiration set against family doubt (an obstacle).

About the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur English Exam

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Englisch is the state examination in continued foreign-language English for the Allgemeine Hochschulreife, taken as a Leistungsfach, a written Grundfach, or (for the small number of candidates who choose it as their 5. Prüfungsfach) an oral Prüfungsfach, under the Oberstufenverordnung. Its content follows the Fachlehrplan Englisch Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022), which targets CEFR level B2/C1 by the end of the Qualifikationsphase and organises the four Kurshalbjahre around eight Themenfelder: The Individual and Society, The United Kingdom, The USA, Other English-Speaking Countries, The Media, Global Chances and Challenges, The World of Work, and Science and Technology. The official written exam has three compulsory Prüfungsteile — Hörverstehen, Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen, and Sprachmittlung in die Fremdsprache (mediating German source material into English) — assessed together with advanced grammar, register and text competence. This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation designed to build and check factual, cultural and grammatical command of that content. It is not a simulation of the official exam, which requires extended English-language writing, authentic listening comprehension, and mediation from German, plus a mündliche Prüfung for candidates examined orally.

Exam sponsor: Ministerium für Bildung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (MB), supported by the Landesinstitut für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung (LISA) and the Landesschulamt. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Official written Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur examination in Englisch, sat either as Leistungsfach (erhöhtes Anforderungsniveau) or Grundfach (grundlegendes Anforderungsniveau). Prüfungsaufgaben are issued in two blocks: first Prüfungsteil 1 (Hörverstehen), based on authentic listening/viewing texts and containing several compulsory sub-tasks; then, once that is collected, Prüfungsteile 2 and 3 together. Prüfungsteil 2 (Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen) offers a choice between one literary and one non-literary text, from which candidates select one Wahlthema and write an extended English response (e.g. analysis, comment or creative writing). Prüfungsteil 3 (Sprachmittlung) is compulsory and based on one or more German-language source texts that candidates mediate into English. Permitted aids are a bilingual and a monolingual English dictionary plus a German spelling dictionary. Candidates who choose Englisch as their 5. Prüfungsfach additionally sit an oral exam. This 100-question bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation only — it does not reproduce the official listening, extended-writing, mediation or oral formats.

Time Limit

Hörverstehen: 30 minutes at both Anforderungsniveaus. Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen: 195 minutes (grundlegendes Anforderungsniveau) or 225 minutes (erhöhtes Anforderungsniveau), each including Auswahlzeit. Passing Score

Subject performance is reported on the 0–15 Punkte scale (Note 1 = 15–13 Punkte, Note 6 = 0 Punkte). Each Prüfungsteil (Hörverstehen, Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen, Sprachmittlung) is given its own unrounded Teilnote, and the Prüfungsnote is then calculated in whole Notenpunkte from these Teilnoten according to the weighting of the Kompetenzbereiche. The Gesamtqualifikation requires at least 200 of a possible 600 Punkte in Block I from the Kurshalbjahresergebnisse (§38 Oberstufenverordnung) and at least 100 of a possible 300 Punkte in Block II from the five Prüfungsfächer/-elemente in vierfacher Wertung (§39), with no element scored 0, at least 4 Punkte in each element, and at least 20 Punkte in vierfacher Wertung in three or more elements including one auf erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau. The 900-point maximum is converted to the Abitur-Durchschnittsnote via the national KMK table.

Exam / Certification Fees

No exam fee for regular enrolled school candidates; the Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt. External and Nichtschüler routes are handled by the Landesschulamt and do not carry a published Englisch-specific fee.

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur English: Suggested Study Strategy

1Organise revision by Themenfeld, not by random topic: build one page per Themenfeld (The Individual and Society, The United Kingdom, The USA, Other English-Speaking Countries, The Media, Global Chances and Challenges, The World of Work, Science and Technology) with key facts, vocabulary and at least one authentic example.
2Practise Sprachmittlung both ways in your head even though the Abitur only tests German-to-English: summarising and adapting register, not translating word for word, is the core skill Prüfungsteil 3 rewards.
3Learn the Operatoren (analyse, comment, discuss, characterize, summarise) precisely — each demands a different structure, and marks are lost by answering an 'analyse' task with a plain summary.
4Keep one worked contrast ready per Themenfeld pairing the Fachlehrplan explicitly invites, such as Orwell's control-through-fear versus Huxley's control-through-pleasure in visions of the future.
5Drill B2/C1 grammar in context, not isolation: mixed conditionals, modal verbs of deduction, reported speech and inversion for emphasis appear inside Prüfungsteil 2 writing, not as standalone grammar drills.
6Revise the Fachlehrplan's own example of Themenfeld-mixing — The USA's immigrants' experience combined with The Individual and Society's chances and challenges for society — as a model for how exam texts often blend two Themenfelder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the official Sachsen-Anhalt Englisch Abitur exam multiple-choice?

No. The official written paper is a three-part Klausur: Hörverstehen (listening comprehension), Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen (an extended English essay responding to a chosen literary or non-literary text), and Sprachmittlung in die Fremdsprache (mediating German-language material into English). Candidates who select Englisch as their 5. Prüfungsfach also sit a mündliche Prüfung. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation for learning and checking the underlying content — it does not simulate the listening, extended-writing, mediation or oral formats.

Why are the questions in English when the underlying exam mixes English and German?

This bank is a study aid for building factual, cultural and grammatical command of the Fachlehrplan content directly in English, the language of instruction and assessment in Prüfungsteile 1 and 2. Only Prüfungsteil 3 (Sprachmittlung) works from German source material into English; the rest of the official exam, like this bank, is conducted in English.

Which content does the exam cover?

The Fachlehrplan Englisch Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022) organises the Qualifikationsphase around eight Themenfelder: The Individual and Society, The United Kingdom, The USA, Other English-Speaking Countries, The Media, Global Chances and Challenges, The World of Work, and Science and Technology. The curriculum explicitly encourages mixing aspects from different Themenfelder — for example The USA's immigrants' experience combined with The Individual and Society's chances and challenges for society — rather than teaching each in isolation.

How long is the written exam?

Per the official 'Hinweise zu den schriftlichen Abiturprüfungen 2026': Hörverstehen takes 30 minutes at both levels; Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen takes 195 minutes at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau or 225 minutes at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau (including Auswahlzeit); and Sprachmittlung takes 60 minutes at both levels. Total working time is 285 minutes (Grundfach) or 315 minutes (Leistungsfach).

What CEFR level does the Sachsen-Anhalt Fachlehrplan target for Abitur Englisch?

The Fachlehrplan states that pupils are expected to reach CEFR level B2/C1 by Abiturniveau, with the higher level (C1) expected especially in receptive skills such as listening and reading, building progressively from A1+/A2 in Schuljahrgang 6 through B1/B1+ in Schuljahrgang 10.

Is Englisch compulsory in the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur?

Englisch is one of the three Kernfächer (alongside Deutsch and Mathematik) under §14 of the Oberstufenverordnung and is generally belegungspflichtig across all four Kurshalbjahre of the Qualifikationsphase (§16). Whether a student also sits it as one of their five Abiturprüfungsfächer — written as Leistungsfach or Grundfach, or orally — depends on their individual Prüfungsfach combination, though a fortgeführte Fremdsprache such as Englisch or a Naturwissenschaft must be included among the Prüfungsfächer.

When was the exam held in 2026?

In the 2026 main session the written Englisch exam was set for Thursday 30 April 2026, with a Nachprüfungstermin on Friday 22 May 2026. Mündliche Prüfungen in the 5. Prüfungsfach began on Monday 11 May 2026, and Zeugnisse were issued by Friday 3 July 2026, with roughly 5,600 candidates sitting the Abitur across Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen, Gemeinschaftsschulen mit gymnasialer Oberstufe, berufliche Gymnasien, Freie Waldorfschulen and Schulen des zweiten Bildungsweges.

Is there an exam fee?

No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt and regular enrolled school candidates pay no fee. Nichtschüler and second-chance routes are administered by the Landesschulamt and have no published Englisch-specific fee.
