About the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Music Exam
Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Musik is the state Music examination for the Allgemeine Hochschulreife, taken as a Profilfach under the Oberstufenverordnung. Unlike most Abiturprüfungsfächer, Musik (like Kunst and Sport) is not assessed with a standard written-only Klausur: §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung provides for a besondere Fachprüfung that pairs a practical/performance or compositional task with a written theory-and-analysis component. Its content follows the Fachlehrplan Musik Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022), whose Qualifikationsphase is organised into nine Kompetenzschwerpunkte — Musik der Moderne, Jazzmusik, Popularmusik, Musik im Medienkontext (Werbung/Film and Original/Bearbeitung), Musiktheater, Geistliche Musik, Konzertante Musik and Musikkulturen der Welt — built on the music-theory and analytical foundations (intervals, harmony, cadences, form) developed across earlier Schuljahrgänge. This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation designed to build and check command of that theory, analysis and history content. It is not a simulation of the official exam's practical/performance or compositional component, and the official written German-language paper is not itself an MCQ format.
Exam sponsor: Ministerium für Bildung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (MB), supported by the Landesinstitut für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung (LISA) and the Landesschulamt. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.
Assessment
Musik is one of three Profilfächer (with Kunst and Sport) under §14 Oberstufenverordnung. When selected as an Abiturprüfungsfach at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau, §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung replaces the standard written Klausur with a besondere Fachprüfung: a practical part (performance, composition, arrangement or a comparable creative task, generally completed and assessed before the main written-exam window) plus a written part testing musical-theoretical and analytical knowledge tied to the school's chosen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt. Qualifikationsphase content is organised into nine Kompetenzschwerpunkte (A-I) covering Musik der Moderne, Jazzmusik, Popularmusik, Musik im Medienkontext, Original und Bearbeitung, Musiktheater, Geistliche Musik, Konzertante Musik and Musikkulturen der Welt. This 100-question bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation of the underlying theory/analysis/history knowledge only — it does not reproduce or simulate the practical/performance component.
Time Limit
The besondere Fachprüfung's practical and written Bearbeitungszeiten are set annually via the RdErl. 'Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Abiturprüfung' together with school-level scheduling, so no single published minute figure applies the way it does for a standard subject Klausur. In the 2026 main session the practical component for the Kunst/Musik/Sport Profilfächer was completed before the main written-exam period began (the last regular teaching day was 10 April 2026), and the written Musik component was held on Friday 17 April 2026, alongside Kunst and Sport, each 'mit dem jeweiligen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt.' Mündliche Prüfungen began 11 May 2026 and Zeugnisse were issued by 3 July 2026.
Passing Score
Subject performance is reported on the 0-15 Punkte scale (Note 1 = 15-13 Punkte, Note 6 = 0 Punkte). The Gesamtqualifikation requires at least 200 of a possible 600 Punkte in Block I from the Kurshalbjahresergebnisse (§38 Oberstufenverordnung) — Musik or Kunst must contribute at least two Kurshalbjahresergebnisse per §38 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 — and at least 100 of a possible 300 Punkte in Block II from the five Prüfungsfächer/-elemente in vierfacher Wertung (§39), with no element scored 0, at least 4 Punkte in each element and at least 20 Punkte in vierfacher Wertung in three or more elements including one auf erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau. The 900-point maximum is converted to the Abitur-Durchschnittsnote via the national KMK table.
Exam / Certification Fees
No exam fee for regular enrolled school candidates; the Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt. External and Nichtschüler routes are handled by the Landesschulamt and do not carry a published Musik-specific fee.

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Music: Suggested Study Strategy
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the official Sachsen-Anhalt Musik Abitur exam multiple-choice?
No. Musik is a Profilfach and, per §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung, is examined through a besondere Fachprüfung that combines a practical/performance or compositional task with a written component — neither part is an MCQ paper. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation of the underlying theory, analysis and history knowledge for learning and self-checking, not a simulation of the official format.
Does this bank test my performance or composition skills?
No. Multiple-choice questions can only honestly test factual, theoretical and analytical knowledge — intervals, harmony, form, genre recognition, music history — not the practical musicianship, performance or composition that the official besondere Fachprüfung's practical component actually assesses. Treat this bank as preparation for the written/theoretical side only.
Why are the questions in English when the exam is in German?
This bank is a study aid for building factual command of the Fachlehrplan content in English. German terms and official vocabulary — Kadenz, Dreiklang, Dodekaphonie, Leitmotiv, Oberstufenverordnung and so on — are preserved exactly as used in the curriculum, so you can carry the vocabulary straight into German-language revision.
Which content does the exam cover?
The Fachlehrplan Musik Gymnasium (Stand 01.08.2022) builds the Qualifikationsphase around nine Kompetenzschwerpunkte: Musik der Moderne (A), Jazzmusik (B), Popularmusik (C), Musik im Medienkontext (D), Original und Bearbeitung (E), Musiktheater (F), Geistliche Musik (G), Konzertante Musik (H) and Musikkulturen der Welt/Diversität (I) — all resting on the music-theory and music-history foundations built up across earlier Schuljahrgänge.
How is Musik examined if it isn't a normal written Klausur?
Sport, Musik and Kunst are Profilfächer. Under §20 Abs. 4 Oberstufenverordnung, if one of them is chosen as an Abiturprüfungsfach, a besondere Fachprüfung takes the place of the ordinary written exam: it includes a practical part (such as a performance, composition or comparable creative task) as well as a written part. The written part is tied to the inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt the school has taught.
Is Musik compulsory in the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur?
Students must belegen at least one of Kunst or Musik durchgängig through the Qualifikationsphase, contributing at least two Kurshalbjahresergebnisse to Block I under §38 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 of the Oberstufenverordnung. Whether a student additionally sits Musik as one of the five Abiturprüfungsfächer is a matter of individual Prüfungsfach combination.
When was the exam held in 2026?
In the 2026 main session the practical component of the Kunst/Musik/Sport Profilfächer was completed before the main written-exam period began, and the written Musik component was scheduled for Friday 17 April 2026, alongside Kunst and Sport. Mündliche Prüfungen began on 11 May 2026 and Zeugnisse were issued by 3 July 2026, with roughly 5,600 candidates sitting the Abitur across Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen, Gemeinschaftsschulen mit gymnasialer Oberstufe, berufliche Gymnasien, Freie Waldorfschulen and Schulen des zweiten Bildungsweges.
Is there an exam fee?
No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt and regular enrolled school candidates pay no fee. Nichtschüler and second-chance routes are administered by the Landesschulamt and have no published Musik-specific fee.
