1Which auxiliary verb is required to form the passé composé of the verb 'arriver' in 'Elle ___ arrivée à huit heures'?
A.est
B.a
C.était
D.sera
Explanation: 'Arriver' is one of the verbs of movement and change of state (along with aller, partir, venir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, naître, mourir and others) that take être as their auxiliary in compound tenses. Because the auxiliary is être, the past participle 'arrivée' must agree in gender and number with the subject 'elle'.
2Complete: 'Quand j'étais enfant, je ___ chez mes grands-parents tous les dimanches.'
A.allais
B.suis allé
C.irai
D.aille
Explanation: The imparfait ('allais') expresses a repeated, habitual action in the past — 'tous les dimanches' signals a routine, which is the imparfait's classic use, unlike the passé composé's single completed event.
3Complete: 'Quand nous sommes arrivés au cinéma, le film ___ déjà.'
A.avait commencé
B.a commencé
C.commençait
D.commence
Explanation: The plus-que-parfait ('avait commencé') expresses an action that was already complete before another past action (arriver) took place — the classic 'past before the past' relationship.
4Complete with the correct future-tense form of 'faire': 'S'il ne pleut pas, il ___ beau ce week-end.'
A.fera
B.ferait
C.fait
D.a fait
Explanation: 'Faire' has an irregular future stem, 'fer-', to which the regular future endings are added: il fera. This weather expression in the main clause of a realistic si-clause (présent + futur) requires the futur simple.
5The imparfait stem for all verbs except 'être' is taken from which present-tense form?
A.the nous-form, minus '-ons'
B.the je-form, minus '-e'
C.the infinitive, minus '-r'
D.the ils-form, minus '-ent'
Explanation: To form the imparfait, remove '-ons' from the present-tense nous-form to get the stem, then add the imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient). For example, nous finiss-ons becomes je finiss-ais.
6Complete: 'Les lettres que j'ai ___ hier sont sur la table.' (écrire)
A.écrites
B.écrit
C.écrite
D.écris
Explanation: With avoir-verbs, the past participle agrees with a preceding direct object (COD). Here 'que' refers back to 'les lettres' (feminine plural), which comes before the verb, so 'écrit' must take the feminine plural ending: écrites.
7In the sentence 'Il ouvrit la porte et sortit sans un mot,' what tense are 'ouvrit' and 'sortit', and where is it mainly used?
A.Passé simple, used in literary narration and formal written texts
B.Passé composé, used in everyday spoken French
C.Imparfait, used for descriptions
D.Subjonctif imparfait, used after expressions of doubt
Explanation: 'Ouvrit' and 'sortit' are passé simple forms (of ouvrir and sortir). The Fachlehrplan lists passé simple as a receptive-only skill for the Qualifikationsphase: students must recognise it in literary texts and Ganzschriften, but are not expected to produce it themselves.
8Complete: 'Elle m'a dit qu'elle ___ ce film la semaine précédente.' (voir)
A.avait vu
B.a vu
C.voyait
D.voit
Explanation: Reporting a past event that happened before another past event ('m'a dit') requires the plus-que-parfait: avait vu. 'La semaine précédente' signals that the viewing happened even earlier than the telling.
9Which sentence correctly uses the futur proche to say 'I am going to leave tomorrow morning'?
A.Je vais partir demain matin.
B.Je vas partir demain matin.
C.Je irai partir demain matin.
D.Je suis parti demain matin.
Explanation: The futur proche is formed with the present tense of 'aller' plus infinitive: 'je vais partir'. It expresses a near or planned future action, which fits 'demain matin'.
10Complete: 'Il pleuvait quand l'accident ___.'
A.s'est produit
B.se produisait
C.s'était produit
D.se produira
Explanation: The imparfait 'pleuvait' sets the ongoing background scene, while the passé composé 's'est produit' marks the single event that interrupted it — a classic pairing in French past narration.

About the Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur French Exam

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Französisch is the state Abitur examination in the Fremdsprache Französisch, taken as a fortgeführte Fremdsprache at grundlegendes or erhöhtes Anforderungsniveau. Following the Fachlehrplan Französisch Gymnasium (LISA, 01.08.2022), it assesses funktionale kommunikative Kompetenz (Hörverstehen/Hörsehverstehen, Leseverstehen, Sprechen, Schreiben, Sprachmittlung), interkulturelle kommunikative Kompetenz, Text- und Medienkompetenz, Sprachbewusstheit and Sprachlernkompetenz across eight prescribed Themenblöcke, targeting GER/CEFR level B2 by the end of Sekundarstufe II. The written examination directly covers three of these competence areas — Hörverstehen, Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen, and Sprachmittlung — a broader written format than Spanisch or Italienisch, whose papers add Hörverstehen only from 2027. This free 100-question MCQ bank trains the underlying language system and content knowledge behind that exam: subjonctif and other verb forms, concordance des temps, pronouns and the passive voice, idiomatic and thematic vocabulary, reading comprehension, the logic of Sprachmittlung as a task, and Landeskunde on France and the Francophonie. It is an English-language study adaptation, not an official-format simulation, and it does not train listening comprehension, spoken production, or the extended written production the real exam requires.

Exam sponsor: Ministerium für Bildung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt (MB), with the Landesinstitut für Schulqualität und Lehrerbildung (LISA) and the Landesschulamt. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Official written Abitur examination in the Fremdsprache Französisch under the Oberstufenverordnung Sachsen-Anhalt, taken at grundlegendes (gA) or erhöhtes Anforderungsniveau (eA). The second block contains Prüfungsteil 2, 'Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen', offering a choice between two Wahlthemen — one built on a literary text, one on a non-literary text, drawn from the four officially designated Themenfelder for the 2026 session (Modes de vie en transformation; La France et la francophonie; L'individu dans la société; Les enjeux de la mondialisation) — and the compulsory Prüfungsteil 3, 'Sprachmittlung in die Fremdsprache', mediating German-language source material into French for a defined audience. Each Prüfungsteil receives its own (non-rounded) Teilnote. This 100-question bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation with genuine French as the tested content — it does not simulate the official free-response format and is not an official translation of any exam material.

Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur French: Suggested Study Strategy

1Treat subjonctif triggers as families, not isolated phrases: volonté (vouloir que), doute (douter que), émotion (être content/surpris que), nécessité (il faut que) and fixed conjunctions (bien que, pour que, avant que) — then contrast with indicative-only 'après que'.
2Drill the three si-clause patterns as fixed pairs (si + présent → futur; si + imparfait → conditionnel présent; si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé) until choosing the right one is automatic — the conditionnel or subjonctif never follows 'si' directly.
3Practise Sprachmittlung with a real addressee in mind: decide what that person needs to know, then select, condense and paraphrase in natural French — never translate word for word, and use compensation strategies for unknown vocabulary.
4Cover all eight Themenblöcke, but give the four 2026 Themenfelder (Modes de vie en transformation, La France et la francophonie, L'individu dans la société, Les enjeux de la mondialisation) the deepest soziokulturelles Orientierungswissen, since they anchor the Schreiben mit Leseverstehen Prüfungsteil.
5Anchor grammar and vocabulary work in authentic short texts — news items, charts, formal letters — because Leseverstehen tasks reward distinguishing explicit information, implicit meaning, fact and opinion, and discontinuous-text data.
6After MCQ practice, move to full official-format tasks — a literary or non-literary Textanalyse essay, and a real Sprachmittlung exercise from a German source — plus targeted listening practice using IQB and Landesbildungsserver sample audio, since MCQs build knowledge, not listening or production skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the official Sachsen-Anhalt Abitur Französisch exam multiple-choice?

No. The official written paper has three parts, all answered in French: 'Hörverstehen', based on authentic audio material; 'Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen', an extended written response to a chosen literary or non-literary text; and 'Sprachmittlung in die Fremdsprache', a compulsory mediation task based on German-language source material. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation for learning and checking the underlying grammar, vocabulary and content — it is not a simulation of the official format and does not train listening comprehension, spoken production, or extended writing.

When is the written Französisch exam in 2026?

Freitag, 8. Mai 2026 — the final written Abitur exam of the 2026 season in Sachsen-Anhalt, according to the Ministerium für Bildung's official Pressemitteilung: 'Die schriftlichen Abiturprüfungen enden am 8. Mai mit dem Fach Französisch.' Mündliche Prüfungen begin on 11 May 2026 and Zeugnisse are issued by 3 July 2026, with around 5,600 candidates sitting the 2026 Abitur in Sachsen-Anhalt across all subjects.

How long is the written exam, and does it include a listening section?

Yes — unlike Spanisch and Italienisch, whose written papers add a graded Hörverstehen Prüfungsteil only from the 2027 exam year, Französisch already includes one in 2026, alongside Englisch and Russisch. The Gesamtarbeitszeit is 285 minutes at grundlegendem Anforderungsniveau (30 minutes Hörverstehen, 195 minutes Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen including Auswahlzeit, 60 minutes Sprachmittlung) and 315 minutes at erhöhtem Anforderungsniveau (30 minutes Hörverstehen, 225 minutes Schreiben, 60 minutes Sprachmittlung). Permitted aids are a dictionary (mono- or bilingual) and a German spelling dictionary.

Which content areas does the exam cover?

The Fachlehrplan Französisch Gymnasium (LISA, valid from 01.08.2022) prescribes eight Themenblöcke for the Qualifikationsphase: Modes de vie en transformation; Valeurs; La France et l'Allemagne au cœur de l'Europe; La France et la francophonie; L'individu dans la société; Le monde du travail; Les médias — multiples formes de communication au XXIe siècle; Les enjeux de la mondialisation. For the written exam's Schreiben-mit-Leseverstehen part specifically, four of these were designated as the binding Themenfelder for the 2026 session: Modes de vie en transformation, La France et la francophonie, L'individu dans la société, and Les enjeux de la mondialisation. At least one Ganzschrift and one film must be studied across the four Kurshalbjahre.

Is Hörverstehen and Sprachmittlung restricted to the four binding Themenfelder?

No. The four Themenfelder restriction applies specifically to the literary and non-literary Wahlthemen of Prüfungsteil 2 (Schreiben mit integriertem Leseverstehen). The official Hinweise state explicitly that 'die Prüfungsteile Hörverstehen und Sprachmittlung bleiben von diesen thematischen Vorgaben unberührt' — both remain unaffected by the topic restriction and can draw on material from across the wider Fachlehrplan.

Can I take Französisch if I only started it in the Oberstufe?

Französisch in Sachsen-Anhalt is generally offered as a fortgeführte Fremdsprache, continued from an earlier Schuljahrgang (as a second Fremdsprache from Schuljahrgang 7 or a third from Schuljahrgang 9) rather than begun from scratch in the Qualifikationsphase. Standard gymnasiale-Oberstufe admission rules apply, and at least one fortgeführte Fremdsprache or a Naturwissenschaft must be among your five Prüfungsfächer. Check your school's course offer and the current Informationserlass for the exact pathway available to you.

Is there an exam fee?

No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen-Anhalt and regular enrolled candidates pay no fee. External-candidate arrangements are handled by the Landesschulamt and are not a published Französisch-specific fee.
