About the Saxony Latinum Exam
Saxony's Latinum Ergänzungsprüfung certifies Latin proficiency (Latinum) under VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 and SOGYA Anlage 4. It is distinct from the Abitur Prüfungsfach Latein: candidates translate a demanding Latin Originaltext of about 180 words into German (political, philosophical or historiographical prose) in 180 minutes, then sit a 20-minute oral after 30 minutes of preparation on about 50 Latin words. Success requires secure Formenlehre and Syntax, an adequate Grundwortschatz, and Sachwissen in Roman politics, history, philosophy and literature. This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation for that certificate knowledge. It is not a simulation of the official exam, which is a German-language translation Klausur plus oral Prüfung.
Exam sponsor: Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus (SMK). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Saxony Latinum: Suggested Study Strategy
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Saxony Latinum the same as the Abitur Prüfungsfach Latein?
No. The Latinum Ergänzungsprüfung is a separate certificate of Latin proficiency under VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 / SOGYA Anlage 4. The Abitur Prüfungsfach Latein is a different examination within the Abitur subject suite. This bank targets Latinum certificate knowledge, not the Latein Abitur paper.
Is the official Latinum exam multiple-choice?
No. Written Teil A is a German-language Übersetzung of an unseen Latin text of about 180 words; oral Teil B lasts 20 minutes after 30 minutes of preparation on about 50 Latin words. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation only.
What texts appear in the written part?
VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 specifies a demanding Originaltext of about 180 Latin words from a political speech or a philosophical or historiographical work, relating to Roman politics, history, philosophy or literature.
How long is the Prüfung?
Written: 180 minutes. Oral: 20 minutes, immediately preceded by 30 minutes Vorbereitungszeit (VwV Abiturprüfung 2026).
What is the passing score?
The overall result averages written and oral scores equally. Pass requires an average of at least 5 Punkte and neither part scored 0. A written score of 0 bars oral admission and fails the entire Ergänzungsprüfung. It may be repeated once.
Are dictionaries allowed?
Yes for written Teil A and during oral preparation: one bilingual Lateinisch-Deutsch dictionary (non-electronic or closed electronic systems without internet/storage expansion). Internet-capable aids are excluded.
When was the 2026 written Latinum held?
Per VwV Bedarf und Schuljahresablauf 2025/2026: written Latinum (with Hebraicum) on 17 April 2026; Nachprüfung on 22 May 2026. Oral Ergänzungsprüfungen followed after written results in the June window.
Why are these practice questions in English MCQ form?
They train the grammar, vocabulary, translation sense and cultural knowledge behind Latinum success. The official assessment requires translating Latin into German and an oral Prüfung — formats this bank deliberately does not simulate.
