About the Saxony Abitur Chemistry Exam
Saxony Abitur Chemie is the state Chemistry examination for the Allgemeine Hochschulreife, taken as a Leistungskursfach, a written Grundkursfach or an oral Prüfungsfach under SOGYA. Its content follows the Lehrplan Gymnasium Chemie and the KMK Bildungsstandards Chemie (Beschluss 18.06.2020): Qualifikationsphase Lernbereiche covering Stoffe/Ordnung (PSE), Redoxreaktionen, chemische Gleichgewichte, Säure-Base-Gleichgewichte, elektrochemische Reaktionen, Energie bei chemischen Reaktionen and organische Stoffe, with Wahlbereiche such as Pufferlösungen, Löslichkeitsgleichgewichte, Aromaten and Komplexverbindungen. This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation built to develop both the conceptual understanding and the quantitative calculation skills — stoichiometry, equilibrium constants, pH and electrochemical amounts — that Saxon Abitur tasks explicitly require. It is not a simulation of the official exam, which is written in German and combines calculations, data interpretation and a fachpraktischen Anteil.
Exam sponsor: Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Kultus (SMK), supported by the Landesamt für Schule und Bildung (LaSuB) and IQB pooled tasks. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.
Assessment
Official written Saxon Abitur examination in Chemie, sat either as Leistungskursfach or Grundkursfach; Chemie can also be taken as an oral Prüfungsfach. Tasks follow the Saxon Lehrplan Lernbereiche and the KMK Bildungsstandards Chemie für die Allgemeine Hochschulreife (four Kompetenzbereiche, three Basiskonzepte, four Inhaltsbereiche). Two of the four presented tasks come from the IQB Abituraufgabenpool; the sächsische Abituraufgabenauswahlkommission supplies the others. This 100-question bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation only — it does not reproduce the German-language, calculation- and data-based written format or the fachpraktischen Anteil.
Time Limit
Written: LK Gesamtarbeitszeit 300 minutes (einschließlich Auswahlzeit) zuzüglich 15 minutes for the Aufgabe mit fachpraktischem Anteil; GK Gesamtarbeitszeit 255 minutes (einschließlich Auswahlzeit) zuzüglich 15 minutes for the fachpraktischen Anteil (VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 / SMK Naturwissenschaften guidance). In 2026 the written Chemie date was Friday 24 April 2026 (Nachtermin 20 May 2026).
Passing Score
Subject performance is reported on the 0–15 Punkte scale (Note 1 = 15–13 Punkte, Note 6 = 0 Punkte). The Gesamtqualifikation requires at least 200 of a possible 600 Punkte in Block I from the Kurshalbjahresergebnisse (SOGYA) and at least 100 of a possible 300 Punkte in Block II from the five Abiturprüfungsfächer in vierfacher Wertung, with no Prüfungsleistung scored 0 and at least 20 Punkte in vierfacher Wertung in three or more Fächer including one Leistungskursfach. The 900-point maximum is converted to the Abitur-Durchschnittsnote via the national KMK table.
Exam / Certification Fees
No exam fee for regular enrolled school candidates; the Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen under SOGYA. Abendgymnasium, Kolleg and external routes are administered under SOGYA / LaSuB and do not carry a published Chemie-specific fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the official Sachsen Chemie Abitur exam multiple-choice?
No. The official written paper is a German-language Klausur in which candidates work three of four materialgestützte Aufgaben — including one Wahlaufgabe with fachpraktischem Anteil — combining qualitative reasoning, genuine numeric calculations and interpretation of experimental data. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation for learning and checking the underlying content and calculation methods, not a simulation of the official format.
Why are the questions in English when the exam is in German?
This bank is a study aid for building factual and procedural command of the Lehrplan content in English. German technical terms — Massenwirkungsgesetz, Donator-Akzeptor-Prinzip, Veresterung and so on — are preserved exactly as used in the curriculum, so you can carry the vocabulary and formulas straight into German-language revision.
Which content does the exam cover?
The Lehrplan Gymnasium Chemie organises the Qualifikationsphase into Lernbereiche such as Stoffe – von der Vielfalt zur Ordnung, Redoxreaktionen, chemische Gleichgewichte, Säure-Base-Gleichgewichte, elektrochemische Reaktionen, Energie bei chemischen Reaktionen and organische Stoffe, plus Wahlbereiche (e.g. Pufferlösungen, Löslichkeitsgleichgewichte, Aromaten). Tasks also reference the KMK Bildungsstandards Chemie (four Kompetenzbereiche, three Basiskonzepte, four Inhaltsbereiche).
How much of the exam is calculation versus theory?
Chemistry at this level is explicitly quantitative: stoichiometry, Kc from the Massenwirkungsgesetz, pH/pOH and Ks/Kb, and electrochemical amount/potential calculations appear throughout Saxon Abitur tasks. This bank reflects that balance with a large set of genuine worked numeric problems, including stoichiometry and equilibrium items.
How long is the written exam?
Per VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 / SMK Naturwissenschaften guidance: LK Gesamtarbeitszeit 300 minutes (einschließlich Auswahlzeit) zuzüglich 15 minutes for the fachpraktischen Anteil; GK Gesamtarbeitszeit 255 minutes (einschließlich Auswahlzeit) zuzüglich 15 minutes for the fachpraktischen Anteil. Exact wording is in the annual VwV — check through your school or REVOSax.
Is Chemie compulsory in the Sachsen Abitur?
Chemie is one of the Naturwissenschaften that can be chosen as Leistungskursfach or Grundkursfach and as an Abiturprüfungsfach. Whether you continuously belegen Chemie and sit it as a Prüfungsfach depends on your individual Fach- and Prüfungsfachwahl under SOGYA.
When was the exam held in 2026?
In the 2026 main session the written Chemie exam was set for Friday 24 April 2026, with a Nachtermin on 20 May 2026 (official Saxon Abitur timetable published via Schule Sachsen / SMK).
Is there an exam fee?
No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen and regular enrolled school candidates pay no fee. Abendgymnasium, Kolleg and external routes are administered under SOGYA / LaSuB and have no published Chemie-specific fee.
