Under VwV Abiturprüfung 2026, candidates interpret an ambitious Latin text (~200 words) with Vergleichsmaterial and translate a fixed extract (~170 words) into German within 270 minutes, focusing on Welterfahrung und -deutung in Republican, Augustan and Imperial literature. Allowed Hilfsmittel include named bilingual Latin–German dictionaries (Langenscheidt, Pons, Stowasser editions listed in the VwV). This free bank of 100 original multiple-choice questions is an English-language study adaptation for grammar, translation judgment and culture/literature analysis. Saxony Abitur Latin: Suggested Study Strategy
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the official Sachsen Latein Abitur exam multiple-choice?
No. The official written paper is a German-language Klausur: candidates interpret a Latin Originaltext with Vergleichsmaterial and translate a designated extract into German. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation for grammar, translation judgment and content knowledge — not a simulation of the official format.
How is Latein different from the Latinum Ergänzungsprüfung in Sachsen?
Latein as an Abiturprüfungsfach (this exam) combines Interpretation (~200 words) and Übersetzung (~170 words) in 270 minutes under the alte-Fremdsprachen Leistungskurs rules, with a 2026 date of 30 April. The Latinum Ergänzungsprüfung is a separate credential (written + oral), with a different text profile (~180 words translation-focused in the written part) and a different 2026 date (17 April). Do not treat them as interchangeable.
Which content does the exam cover?
VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 names Welterfahrung und -deutung in der Literatur der republikanischen und der augusteischen Zeit und der Kaiserzeit as the Schwerpunkt, with antike or nachantike Vergleichstexte. The Lehrplan Gymnasium Latein builds the linguistic and literary competencies (Cicero rhetoric, Catullus, Vergil, exile literature, Roman values, myth, philosophy) that feed that exam.
How long is the written exam?
270 minutes Arbeitszeit for Latein (VwV Abiturprüfung 2026), the same band as Griechisch — shorter than the 285-minute band used for modern Fremdsprachen schriftlicher Prüfungsteil.
Which Hilfsmittel are allowed?
VwV Abiturprüfung 2026 lists specific bilingual Latin–German dictionaries for Latein, including named Langenscheidt, Pons and Stowasser editions (print or closed electronic systems without network access). Confirm the current year's list with your school before exam day.
When is the exam held in 2026?
Per the SMK Terminübersicht for 2026, written Latein is Thursday 30 April 2026 (shared with Englisch, Russisch, Spanisch, Polnisch, Tschechisch, Italienisch and Griechisch), with a Nachtermin on Wednesday 27 May 2026.
Is there an exam fee?
No. The Abitur is a state school examination in Sachsen and regular enrolled school candidates pay no fee. Nichtschüler and second-chance routes are administered under Saxon school authority rules and have no published Latein-specific fee.
