1Complete: "Credo che Laura ___ già a casa."
A.sia
B.è
C.sarà
D.fosse
Explanation: Verbs of opinion such as credere and pensare followed by che require the congiuntivo. The congiuntivo presente of essere for the third person singular is sia.
2Complete the unreal present conditional: "Se ___ più soldi, comprerei una macchina elettrica."
A.avessi
B.avrei
C.ho
D.avrò
Explanation: The periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà (secondo tipo) uses congiuntivo imperfetto in the se-clause and condizionale presente in the main clause: Se avessi…, comprerei…
3Complete the past unreal conditional: "Se avessi ascoltato i consigli, non ___ questi problemi."
A.avrei avuto
B.avessi avuto
C.avevo
D.avrei
Explanation: Past irreality pairs congiuntivo trapassato in the se-clause with condizionale passato in the main clause: non avrei avuto questi problemi.
4Choose the correct form: "Benché ___ stanco, ha finito il compito."
A.fosse
B.era
C.sia
D.sarebbe
Explanation: Concessive conjunctions benché, sebbene and nonostante che require the congiuntivo. With a past main clause referring to a simultaneous past situation, congiuntivo imperfetto (fosse) is the natural choice.
5Complete: "È importante che voi ___ puntuali all'esame orale."
A.siate
B.siete
C.sarete
D.siate stati
Explanation: Impersonal expressions of necessity or importance (è importante/necessario/meglio) take the congiuntivo. The 2nd person plural congiuntivo presente of essere is siate.
6Which form correctly completes: "Spero che loro ___ il treno."?
A.prendano
B.prendono
C.prenderanno
D.prendessero
Explanation: Sperare che triggers the congiuntivo. The 3rd person plural congiuntivo presente of prendere is prendano.
7Complete the passive: "La prova scritta ___ dal Ministero."
A.è stata preparata
B.ha preparato
C.è preparando
D.si è preparata
Explanation: The true passive with essere + participio agrees in gender and number with the subject: la prova (f.sg.) → è stata preparata.
8Complete: "Uscendo di casa, ___ che pioveva."
A.ho visto
B.vedendo
C.vedevo
D.avrei visto
Explanation: The gerundio (uscendo) expresses simultaneous circumstance; the main verb carries the tense. Ho visto is the natural narrative completion.
9Transform to discorso indiretto: Marco says "Vengo domani." → Marco ha detto che ___ il giorno dopo.
A.sarebbe venuto
B.viene
C.verrà
D.venisse
Explanation: In discorso indiretto after a past reporting verb, a future-from-then reading uses condizionale passato: sarebbe venuto. Time adverbials also shift (domani → il giorno dopo).
10Complete: "Non pensavo che tu ___ così tante lingue."
A.parlassi
B.parli
C.parleresti
D.parlavi
Explanation: After a past main clause of opinion (non pensavo), the subordinate takes congiuntivo imperfetto: parlassi.

Saxony Abitur Italian: Suggested Study Strategy

1Master the congiuntivo trigger list first (opinion, will, emotion, impersonal expressions, benché/sebbene) — it underlies periodo ipotetico, discorso indiretto and concessive clauses alike.
2Treat il passato remoto as receptive knowledge: recognise it in literary Prüfungsteil A texts, but prioritise producing passato prossimo and imperfetto in your own writing.
3Rehearse Partnerprüfung turns: state a clear thesis, react to your partner, ask a follow-up, and avoid monologue — Interaktion is explicitly weighted.
4Practise Sprachmittlung with a real addressee: select, condense and explain in natural Italian — never translate word for word.
5Keep a running falsi amici list (camera, morbido, parenti, firma, libreria) — these cost marks in both Leseverstehen and Sprachmittlung.
6After MCQ practice, move to full official-format tasks: a timed Schreibaufgabe and a real mediation from a German source, plus a recorded Partnerprüfung simulation.
