1Read the message: "Hi Lena, this is my friend Ivan. He is 13. He lives in Plovdiv and he plays basketball every Saturday." What is true about Ivan?
A.He is Lena's brother and lives in Sofia.
B.He plays football every Saturday in Plovdiv.
C.He lives in Plovdiv and plays basketball on Saturdays.
D.He is 13 and he never plays sport.
Explanation: The message says Ivan lives in Plovdiv and plays basketball every Saturday. At A2, match names, places, and days exactly; do not add facts that are not in the text.
2Read the school notice: "Library hours: Monday–Friday 8:00–16:00. Closed at weekends. Quiet, please. No food." When is the library open?
A.Saturday morning only
B.Every day including Sunday
C.Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00
D.Monday to Friday after 16:00
Explanation: The notice lists Monday–Friday 8:00–16:00 and says it is closed at weekends. Notices and timetables are a Grade 7 NVO reading text type: read days and times first.
3Choose the correct form: "Maria _____ to school by tram every morning."
A.go
B.going
C.is go
D.goes
Explanation: A habit with every morning takes present simple. The third-person singular of go is goes. Present continuous (is going) would describe an action around now, not a daily routine.
4Which hobby best matches this sentence: "I take photos of mountains and lakes at the weekend."
A.cooking
B.chess
C.swimming
D.photography
Explanation: Taking photos is photography. NVO topics include hobbies and free time plus natural landmarks, so connect the activity to the right lexical item.
5Choose the correct modal: "I _____ swim, but I can't dive."
A.must
B.can
C.should to
D.may not to
Explanation: Can expresses ability. The contrast with can't dive shows the sentence is about what the speaker is able to do, not obligation (must) or advice (should).
6Choose the correct sentence about the classroom.
A.There is two windows next to the door.
B.There are two windows next to the door.
C.It has two windows next the door.
D.There two windows are next to the door.
Explanation: Use there are with a plural noun (two windows). There is is only for singular. Next to is the correct preposition of place.
7Read: "The cinema is opposite the supermarket, between the park and the post office." Where is the cinema?
A.Inside the supermarket
B.Behind the park only
C.Opposite the supermarket, between the park and the post office
D.Next to the school and far from the post office
Explanation: Copy the location language exactly: opposite + between. A2 reading often tests prepositions of place in town descriptions.
8Choose the correct time expression: "The match starts _____ 19:30 _____ Friday."
A.in / in
B.on / at
C.at / on
D.at / in
Explanation: Use at with clock times (at 19:30) and on with days (on Friday). In is for months, years, and parts of the day such as in the morning.
9Read the invitation: "Dear classmates, Please come to my birthday party on Sunday 14 June at 16:00. My address is 12 Vitosha Street. Bring a game if you want. Love, Nina. RSVP by Friday." What must guests do if they want to reply?
A.Reply by Friday
B.Arrive on Friday with a cake
C.Meet Nina at school at 16:00
D.Bring a present and stay overnight
Explanation: RSVP by Friday means please reply before Friday. The party itself is Sunday 14 June at 16:00. Invitations are an official NVO reading text type.
10Choose the correct question: "_____ do you usually do after school?"
A.Where
B.Who
C.What
D.How many
Explanation: What asks for an activity. After school you expect a hobby or routine (I do my homework / I play football). Where would need a place, who a person, how many a number.

About the NVO Grade 7 Foreign Language Exam

Bulgaria's optional National External Assessment (Национално външно оценяване, NVO) in a foreign language at the end of Grade 7 measures CEFR A2 communicative competence in the language studied in compulsory hours. The 2025–2026 model (published 12.09.2025) is a 60-minute written paper with listening, reading, and one guided writing task, scored 0–100 points under Ordinance No. 11. It is one national assessment with language versions — typically English, German, French, Russian, and Spanish — not a separate exam per language. This free English MCQ bank trains A2 reading strategies and high-frequency grammar/vocabulary across those languages. It is not a simulation of the official audio listening paper, short free-response reading items, or the 20-minute writing task.

Assessment

Optional MON NVO (по желание) at CEFR A2. Listening (20 min): 10 MCQ in three parts — three short information texts heard twice, three short conversations heard once, one interview heard twice. Reading (20 min): 10 tasks in three parts — media text (3 MCQ), letter/invitation/social-media message (4 MCQ), notice/brochure/advert/timetable (3 short free-response). Writing (20 min): one guided everyday text from instructions and a source prompt. Papers are offered as language versions of one national assessment (English, German, French, Russian, Spanish). No speaking paper in the 2025–2026 model. This 100-question bank is an English MCQ study adaptation of reading strategies and high-frequency A2 grammar/vocabulary, with target-language text in the German, French, Spanish, and Russian items — not a listening, writing, or speaking simulation.

Time Limit

Official paper: 60 minutes (listening 20 + reading 20 + writing 20). 2026 date: 22 June 2026, 09:00.

Passing Score

Maximum 100 points. Each task carries points according to cognitive level, task type, and difficulty (official model §4). MON does not publish a pass/fail cut score. The 2025/2026 model states the total does NOT serve as a балообразуващ element for admission after Grade 7, and RUO Sofia-grad confirmed for the 2026 campaign that no Sofia class used the foreign-language result in its admission score.

Exam Fee

No exam fee for regular school candidates. Students apply at their school to sit the optional foreign-language NVO; MON does not publish a candidate fee. (Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria (Министерство на образованието и науката, МОН))

NVO Grade 7 Foreign Language Study Tips from Top Performers

1Practise global then selective reading: first the main idea of a notice or message, then names, times, prices, and places.
2Drill high-frequency A2 grammar in the language you will sit (present/past/near future, articles, prepositions, comparatives, modals) rather than translating word-for-word from Bulgarian.
3Learn the official topic vocabulary: school duties, hobbies, travel, food and sport, shopping, environment, and Bulgarian plus target-language holidays and landmarks.
4For the official listening paper, train with audio: information texts and the interview are heard twice; the three short conversations are heard once. These MCQs are not a substitute for timed audio practice.
5For the official writing task, practise a 20-minute everyday text from a prompt (message, invitation reply, short personal text) after you have used these MCQs to lock grammar and vocabulary.
