The BARB, now the Army Cognitive Test (ACT), is the British Army's free computer-based aptitude battery, taken in around 30 minutes at an Army Careers Centre. Five timed sub-tests measure reasoning, error detection, number fluency, word rules and orientation, producing a General Trainability Index (GTI) from accuracy and speed. A GTI of at least 26 is needed for entry, and a score is valid for 24 months.

1In the BARB Reasoning / Deductive Reasoning section, you read: "John is taller than Mark." Who is shorter?
A.Mark
B.John
C.Both are the same height
D.Cannot be determined
Explanation: The statement establishes a single ordered relationship: John > Mark in height. If John is taller, then Mark must be the shorter of the two. Deductive Reasoning items reward reading the statement carefully and answering only what is asked.
2Reasoning statement: "Sara is faster than Lee. Lee is faster than Tom." Who is the slowest?
A.Tom
B.Sara
C.Lee
D.Cannot be determined
Explanation: Chaining the two statements gives the order Sara > Lee > Tom in speed. The person at the bottom of the chain, Tom, is the slowest. Deductive Reasoning items often link two comparisons that you must combine into one ranking.
3Reasoning: "Ben is not as old as Ade." Which statement is TRUE?
A.Ade is older than Ben
B.Ben is older than Ade
C.They are the same age
D.Ade is younger than Ben
Explanation: "Ben is not as old as Ade" means Ben has fewer years than Ade, so Ade is the older of the two. Negative phrasing ("not as ... as") is common in BARB Reasoning items and must be unpacked into a direct comparison.
4Reasoning: "The school is taller than the tower. The tower is taller than the hut." Which is the tallest?
A.The school
B.The tower
C.The hut
D.Cannot be determined
Explanation: Combining the statements gives school > tower > hut in height, so the school is tallest. BARB Reasoning frequently uses two stacked comparisons that you order before answering only the question asked.
5Reasoning: "Anna sits to the LEFT of Priya." From the reader's point of view facing them, who is on the right?
A.Priya
B.Anna
C.Neither
D.Both
Explanation: If Anna is to the left of Priya in the described arrangement, then Priya occupies the right-hand position. Positional Reasoning items test whether you can apply a single left/right rule without overthinking the perspective stated in the item.
6Reasoning: "X is heavier than Y. Z is lighter than Y." Order from heaviest to lightest.
A.X, Y, Z
B.Z, Y, X
C.Y, X, Z
D.X, Z, Y
Explanation: X is heavier than Y, and Z is lighter than Y, so Y sits between them: X > Y > Z. Translating each statement into one chain lets you read off the full ordering quickly.
7Reasoning: "If all soldiers are trained and Rai is a soldier," then Rai is ___.
A.trained
B.untrained
C.possibly trained
D.a recruit only
Explanation: This is a valid syllogism: every soldier is trained, Rai belongs to the set of soldiers, so Rai must be trained. Deductive Reasoning rewards applying a stated universal rule to a specific case without adding outside assumptions.
8Reasoning: "Kim is in front of Joe. Joe is in front of Sam." Who is at the back?
A.Sam
B.Kim
C.Joe
D.Cannot be determined
Explanation: The front-to-back order is Kim, then Joe, then Sam, so Sam is last in line. Sequencing two 'in front of' relationships into a single queue gives the answer directly.
9Reasoning: "Maya is richer than Tess but poorer than Omar." Who has the most money?
A.Omar
B.Maya
C.Tess
D.Cannot be determined
Explanation: Maya is poorer than Omar and richer than Tess, placing the order as Omar > Maya > Tess. Omar therefore has the most money. A single sentence can contain two comparisons that fix the entire ranking.
10Reasoning: "No officer is off duty. Captain Lee is an officer." Captain Lee is ___.
A.on duty
B.off duty
C.possibly off duty
D.a civilian
Explanation: "No officer is off duty" means every officer is on duty. Since Captain Lee is an officer, she must be on duty. Negative universal statements still produce a definite conclusion when applied to a member of the set.
