The NSW Gasfitting Licence lets a qualified tradesperson perform gaswork on consumer gas installations in NSW under NSW Fair Trading and the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017. It is qualification and competency-based rather than a fixed-count exam, built on AS/NZS 5601.1 for the design, installation, commissioning and testing of natural gas and LP Gas installations. Gasfitters must soundness-test pipework, ensure correct combustion, ventilation and flueing, and lodge a certificate of compliance (network-connected) or inspection (not connected) via BCNSW eCert within 5 business days, keeping a copy for 5 years. This free prep includes 100 research-based practice questions with explanations and an AI tutor.

1Which standard sets out the general requirements for the design, installation and commissioning of domestic and commercial gas installations in NSW?
A.AS/NZS 3000
B.AS/NZS 5601.1
C.AS 4645
D.AS/NZS 3500.4
Explanation: AS/NZS 5601.1 'Gas installations Part 1: General installations' is the primary standard for the design, installation and commissioning of gas installations using natural gas, LP Gas or biogas in NSW. It is referenced by NSW gas safety legislation.
2In NSW, who must a person hold a licence or certificate from before performing any gasfitting work, regardless of the value of the work?
A.NSW Fair Trading
B.Australian Gas Association
C.Energy Safe Victoria
D.WorkSafe NSW
Explanation: NSW Fair Trading licenses plumbing, draining and gasfitting work under the Home Building Act and gas safety legislation. A licence or certificate is required for any gasfitting work irrespective of its cost or whether it is residential, commercial or industrial.
3Natural gas is mostly methane. Compared with air, methane is:
A.Heavier than air and pools at floor level
B.Lighter than air and rises
C.The same density as air
D.Heavier than air only when cold
Explanation: Methane has a relative density (specific gravity) of about 0.55, so it is lighter than air and rises. This is why ventilation for natural gas leaks is provided high in a room, and why high-level detection is appropriate.
4LP Gas (commercial propane) has a relative density of about 1.5. In a leak, the gas will tend to:
A.Rise to the ceiling
B.Disperse evenly through the room
C.Sink and accumulate at low points
D.Stay suspended at mid-height
Explanation: Propane is roughly 1.5 times the density of air, so leaked LP Gas sinks and collects at floor level, in pits, drains and low cavities. This is why LPG appliances and cylinders have specific requirements around low-level openings and below-ground spaces.
5Under AS/NZS 5601.1, what is the ONLY acceptable method of locating a suspected gas leak on consumer piping?
A.A lit match held near the joint
B.A soap-and-water solution or approved gas-detection equipment
C.Smelling for odorant only
D.Listening for a hissing sound only
Explanation: AS/NZS 5601.1 requires that a soap-and-water solution or other suitable gas-detecting equipment be the only methods used to locate a leak. Matches, candles or any other ignition source must never be used.
6During a soundness (leakage) test on consumer piping under AS/NZS 5601.1, the installation is pressurised to operating pressure or 2.0 kPa, whichever is greater. The test is satisfactory when, over the test period, there is:
A.A pressure rise of no more than 2 kPa
B.No loss of pressure
C.A loss of less than 10 kPa
D.A steady rise to operating pressure
Explanation: A soundness test requires the test pressure (operating pressure or 2.0 kPa, whichever is greater) to be held with no loss of pressure over the test period. Any drop indicates a leak that must be found and rectified before gas is connected.
7What is the approximate nominal supply (standard test) pressure for natural gas at a domestic appliance inlet in Australia?
A.1.13 kPa
B.2.75 kPa
C.7.0 kPa
D.70 kPa
Explanation: Natural gas is reticulated to domestic appliances at a nominal supply pressure of about 1.13 kPa (just over 1 kPa). Appliances are designed and adjusted to operate correctly at this low pressure.
8What is the approximate nominal supply (standard test) pressure for LP Gas at a domestic appliance inlet in Australia?
A.1.13 kPa
B.2.75 kPa
C.5.5 kPa
D.47 kPa
Explanation: LP Gas is supplied to domestic appliances at a nominal pressure of about 2.75 kPa. This is higher than natural gas (1.13 kPa) because LPG has a higher calorific value, so a smaller volume delivers the same energy.
9A gasfitter completes new gasfitting work on an installation connected to a gas network in NSW. Which document must they provide?
A.A certificate of inspection
B.A certificate of compliance
C.A defect notice
D.A development application
Explanation: When gasfitting work is carried out on an installation connected to a gas network, the gasfitter must provide a certificate of compliance. A certificate of inspection is used instead when the installation is NOT connected to a network.
10Within how many business days of completing gasfitting work must a NSW gasfitter submit a certificate of compliance or inspection?
A.1 business day
B.5 business days
C.14 business days
D.30 business days
Explanation: NSW requires the certificate of compliance or certificate of inspection to be submitted within 5 business days of completing the gasfitting work. From 1 March 2026 these certificates must be lodged through the BCNSW eCert portal.
