About the AF Light Vehicle Driving Theory Exam
The light-vehicle theory test is the theoretical half of the driving examination administered by the General Directorate of Traffic (Polic-e-Rah) under the Ministry of Interior Affairs for the Grade 4 (category B) licence — vehicles up to 3,500 kg with not more than eight seats. It covers the Road Traffic Law of Afghanistan (Official Gazette 484), the eight categories of traffic sign taught to licence applicants, priority at junctions under the 'right over left' rule, driver duties after a crash, and driving on high mountain passes such as the Salang. Article 12 of the Law requires an applicant to be 18, to pass a medical examination, and to succeed in both the theoretical and the practical test before the traffic administration issues the licence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age to obtain a driving licence in Afghanistan?
Article 12 of the Road Traffic Law provides that the licence is issued after completion of 18 years of age, subject to a medical examination and to passing the theoretical and practical tests.
Which licence grade covers a private car in Afghanistan?
Grade 4, also shown as category B, covers light vehicles up to 3,500 kg total weight with not more than eight seats. Grade 5 (A) covers motorcycles and rickshaws, Grade 3 (C) goods vehicles above 3,500 kg, Grade 2 (D) buses, and Grade 1 (E) articulated vehicles.
How much does the Afghanistan driving licence cost?
The Regulation on Issuing Driving Licences sets a total of AFN 720. Because tariffs change, confirm the current figure with your provincial traffic directorate.
Does Afghanistan publish national speed limits in the Road Traffic Law?
No. The Road Traffic Law of 1360 (1981), which remains in force in twelve chapters and eighty-five articles, sets no numeric national speed limits. It empowers the traffic administration to erect signs and impose movement restrictions, so your legal maximum is the posted figure and, where none is posted, a speed that is safe for the conditions.
In which languages is the official examination conducted?
The examination is administered by the General Directorate of Traffic in Afghanistan's official languages, Dari and Pashto. This practice bank is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation. It is not an official translation, not a simulation of the official paper's format or language, and not a substitute for the practical driving test.
