About the TEF Canada Exam

The TEF Canada (Test d'évaluation de français pour le Canada) is the official French-language proficiency test accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for immigration and citizenship applications. Developed and administered by le français des affaires — CCI Paris Île-de-France, it has been recognised by IRCC since 2002. An immigration application requires all four tests: Compréhension de l'oral (40 questions / 40 minutes), Compréhension des écrits (40 questions / 60 minutes), Expression écrite (2 sections / 60 minutes), and Expression orale (2 sections / 15 minutes); a citizenship application requires only listening and speaking. Each skill is scored on its own scale — listening 0–360, reading 0–300, writing 0–450, speaking 0–450 — then mapped to CEFR levels (A1–C2) and Canadian NCLC levels 1–12. There is no single pass/fail score; immigration programmes specify the NCLC thresholds required. The two comprehension tests comprise 80 multiple-choice questions with 4 options each and +1/0 scoring, and the listening audio is played only once. Items are progressive, ranging from simple A1-level tasks to complex C1/C2-level abstract professional texts. All four tests must be taken on the same day.

Where do the TEF Canada terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the Le français des affaires — CCI Paris Île-de-France (recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / IRCC since 2002) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

What is TEF Canada and who accepts it for immigration?

TEF Canada (Test d'évaluation de français pour le Canada) is a French-language proficiency test developed by le français des affaires — CCI Paris Île-de-France. It has been recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) since 2002 as an approved language test for immigration and citizenship applications, including Express Entry, the Canadian Experience Class, and Provincial Nominee Programs.

How is TEF Canada scored and what score do I need?

Each skill is scored on its own scale — listening 0–360, reading 0–300, writing 0–450, speaking 0–450 — and mapped to CEFR levels (A1–C2) and Canadian NCLC levels 1–12. There is no single pass mark; the required score depends on your immigration programme. The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires NCLC 7 or higher in each skill, which is also the threshold for the French-language category and for 25 or 50 extra CRS points. Enter the values from the "Équivalence ancien score" column of your certificate — IRCC does not accept the separate "Score / 699" column.
