About the NC Security Guard Exam
North Carolina registers unarmed security guards through the Private Protective Services Board under NCGS Chapter 74C. The employer applies, and a Board-certified trainer certifies that the guard completed the 16-hour basic course covering the security officer's role, legal issues, emergency response, communications, patrol procedures, note taking and report writing, and professional conduct; the Board gives no state exam. A new unarmed registration application costs $68 plus processing fees, and the registration card must be renewed every year.
