Who sets and manages the Firefighter Grade 1 entrance examination?
The Public Service Commission, not the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service. Item 6 of the October 2025 recruitment advertisement says qualifying applicants must write an entrance examination 'set & managed by the Public Service Commission'. Consequence: written-exam instructions reach you through the Commission and the Service Commissions Department, so watch your registered email and SCD notices, not TTFS social media alone.
List the screening stages that follow a qualifying Firefighter Grade 1 application.
Advertisement items 6 to 11, in order: (1) PSC entrance examination; (2) successful candidates listed in order of merit by the Commission; (3) those selected sit a Physical Aptitude Test administered by the Fire Service School; (4) interview by a TTFS selection committee; (5) medical examination by a Government Medical Officer; (6) shortlisting for Fire Service School training; (7) eligibility to be considered for appointment as Firefighter on one year's probation.
Why is 'listed in order of merit' different from 'passed'?
Item 7 says candidates successful in the entrance examination are ranked in merit order by the Commission, and that 'those selected' undergo the Physical Aptitude Test. Being successful and being selected are two separate events divided by a ranked list. Consequence: treat the written examination as a competitive ranking exercise, not a threshold to scrape over, because the number called forward depends on the Service's requirement.
Which body administers the Physical Aptitude Test?
The Fire Service School, a TTFS institution, per item 7 of the advertisement - not the Public Service Commission. The School also delivers the induction training that follows, so the assessment is built around its own course. No reviewed official Trinidad and Tobago source publishes the events, equipment, loads, distances, time limits or pass criteria, so foreign standards such as CPAT cannot be assumed to transfer.
Who conducts the medical examination, and what is it designed to test?
Item 9 of the advertisement names a Government Medical Officer. Regulation 15(1) of the Fire Service (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations 1998 requires a medical examination 'specifically designed for persons required to respond to the physical and psychological demands of an office in the Service as a qualification for appointment' - physical and psychological. It is a qualification for appointment, so failing it removes eligibility at the final stage.
Under PSC Regulation 150, what determines a Firefighter candidate's relative merit?
Regulation 150(2) says a candidate who qualifies is selected on merit by the Commission 'on the basis of a practical test devised by the Commission after consultation with the Chief Fire Officer and an interview'. Regulation 150(3) says relative merits are determined by performance in the practical test and interview. Consequence: the written examination puts you on the list; the practical and the interview decide where you finish on it.
Who may sit on the Firefighter Selection Board?
PSC Regulation 150(4) allows the Commission to establish a Selection Board of the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, the officer in charge of the Fire Service School, and the Director of Personnel Administration or a representative not lower than an Executive Director, Human Resource Management. Two of the three seats are operational fire officers, one of whom runs the School, so prepare Service-specific answers rather than generic interview answers.
What must happen when a Firefighter vacancy occurs, under PSC Regulation 149?
The Chief Fire Officer advises the Director of Personnel Administration within fourteen days. The Commission may advertise through press and electronic media; applicants apply on the appropriate form to the Director, who forwards applications to the Chief Fire Officer. Regulation 149(5): the Chief Fire Officer verifies that applicants qualify under the 1998 Regulations and may make enquiries from the Police about an applicant's character.
How are candidates officially told when and where to present themselves?
PSC Regulation 150(1): the Director of Personnel Administration notifies all candidates for the office of Firefighter of the place, date and time at which they may present themselves for selection by the Commission. Consequence: a candidate-specific notification is the controlling instruction. As of 25 July 2026 the SCD interview-and-exam-dates page shows no Firefighter Grade 1 examination date, so monitor your registered email, including spam, and the SCD latest-news page.
Minimum height standard for a Trinidad and Tobago Firefighter candidate
At least 166.25 centimetres for males and 160 centimetres for females, and the candidate must be 'of good physique' - Regulation 3(1)(b)(iii), Fire Service (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations 1998. That is roughly 5 ft 5.5 in and 5 ft 3 in. The figure is exact and metric, the recruitment advertisement does not restate it, and it is checked at application, so no later training changes it.
Age limits for entry into the Fire Service
Not younger than eighteen and not older than thirty-five at the time of application - Regulation 3(1)(b)(ii), repeated in item 1 of the October 2025 advertisement. Two separate provisions modify this: Regulation 11 deducts qualifying service from a candidate's actual age, and Regulation 13 allows a person aged 35 to under 50 with previous pensionable Fire Service service to be re-employed in an office in the Service.
What service can be deducted from a candidate's age under Regulation 11?
Up to two years for either national or military service or service in a protective service, or up to two years of continuous service in a civil capacity under the State, including acting or temporary service or service in a statutory authority. The service must immediately precede the date of application for entry into the Fire Service School. Regulation 11(2) defines Protective Service as the Fire Service, the Prison Service and the Police Service.
How do the education rules in the 1998 Regulations differ from the October 2025 advertisement?
Regulation 3(1)(b)(iv) accepts CXC General Proficiency Grade I, II or III or Basic Grade I in English Language plus two other subjects at General I to III or Basic I or II; or GCE Ordinary Level passes in three subjects including English Language at Grade A or B; or another qualification assessed as suitable by the Chief Fire Officer. The advertisement stated the narrower 'General Proficiency Grade I & II or III'. For a live intake, the advertisement is the operative notice.
How is 'good character' evidenced for a Firefighter candidate?
Regulation 3(1)(b)(i) requires good character 'as evidenced by a testimonial from the Police and a member of standing in the community'. The October 2025 advertisement adds that character will be verified at a later date by Certificate of Character. Separately, PSC Regulation 149(5) permits the Chief Fire Officer to make enquiries from the Police concerning the character of any applicant during qualification checking.
Which identity documents did the October 2025 advertisement require?
Item 3 required possession of any TWO of: a Trinidad and Tobago National Identification Card, Driver's Permit or Passport; a Computerized Birth Certificate; or, where a name has changed, an Affidavit, Deed Poll, Marriage Certificate or Divorce Decree. Note it is 'any two', not all three. The additional instructions require original documents only, scanned copies uploaded to EmployTT, and no laminated documents.
Which conduct and presentation rules can disqualify a candidate?
The advertisement's additional instructions: any person found submitting false information is immediately disqualified; no offensive tattoos or body art; all candidates must be professionally attired at all physical interactions with the TTFS; and unsuitable applications will not be acknowledged. The tattoo rule bars offensive work rather than all visible tattoos, and no definition or review procedure is published - ask TTFS Recruitment rather than assume.
How long is the probationary period on first appointment?
Twelve months - Regulation 17(1) of the 1998 Regulations, matching item 11 of the advertisement. Promotion to a higher office carries a six-month probation under Regulation 17(2). Regulation 20(1) requires the Chief Fire Officer, through the Permanent Secretary, to submit a first report after six months of service and a final report one month before the twelve-month probation expires.
What happens to a trainee who fails Fire Service School training?
Item 12 of the advertisement: a candidate who fails to satisfy the requirements of the course of training, or is otherwise not considered fit to be a member of the TTFS, shall be discharged from the programme. Read it beside item 11, which says a candidate who completes the course and is in every respect fit shall be 'eligible to be considered for appointment' - eligibility to be considered, not a guaranteed appointment.
How does a verb agree with its subject when words separate them?
The verb agrees with the head noun of the subject, never with a noun inside an intervening phrase. 'The list of applicants IS long' - the head is 'list', not 'applicants'. Watch 'each', 'every', 'either' and 'neither', which take singular verbs, and 'either A or B', where the verb agrees with the nearer subject. Cross out the phrase between subject and verb before choosing.
Collective nouns such as team, committee, service: singular or plural verb?
Singular when the group acts as one unit ('The Fire Service responds to the call'); plural when its members act individually ('The committee were divided in their views'). Keep the choice consistent across the whole sentence - do not write 'the team is divided in their views'. If a sentence-correction option mixes a singular verb with a plural pronoun, that mismatch is usually the planted error.
its vs it's, your vs you're, their vs there vs they're
The apostrophe forms are always contractions: it's = it is/has, you're = you are, they're = they are. The others are possessives or place words: its (belonging to it), your (belonging to you), their (belonging to them), there (place or 'there is'). Test by expanding the contraction - if 'it is' does not fit the sentence, the correct word is 'its'. Possessive pronouns never take an apostrophe.
affect vs effect
'Affect' is normally the verb meaning to influence: 'Smoke affected visibility.' 'Effect' is normally the noun meaning the result: 'The effect was severe.' The exceptions are worth knowing because tests use them: 'effect' as a verb means to bring about ('to effect a rescue'), and 'affect' as a noun is a psychology term for observable emotion. Substitute 'influence' for affect and 'result' for effect to check.
fewer vs less, number vs amount
Use 'fewer' and 'number' for countable items you could list one by one: fewer applicants, the number of hoses. Use 'less' and 'amount' for uncountable mass quantities: less water, the amount of smoke. Money, time and distance are treated as single quantities, so 'less than $500' and 'less than three months' are correct. The same countable-uncountable test decides 'many' versus 'much'.
Comma splice, run-on sentence and sentence fragment
A comma splice joins two complete sentences with only a comma ('The alarm sounded, we responded'). A run-on joins them with no punctuation at all. A fragment lacks a subject or a finite verb ('Because the alarm sounded'). Fix a splice four ways: full stop, semicolon, a coordinating conjunction after the comma, or subordination. In sentence-correction items, first ask whether each half could stand alone.
Which words most often decide a comprehension answer?
Qualifiers and exception words: all, always, never, only, must, except, unless, most, some, may. An option that is true in general often fails because the passage said 'some' and the option says 'all', or the passage said 'may' and the option says 'must'. Underline every qualifier in the question stem before reading the options, and reject any option that strengthens or weakens the passage's own wording.
Stated fact vs inference
A stated fact can be pointed to in the text word for word. An inference is a conclusion the passage forces you to accept even though it is unwritten. The trap is the 'reasonable but unsupported' option - true in the real world, not supported by this passage. Test each candidate answer by asking which specific sentence proves it. If you cannot name one, it is your own knowledge, not an inference.
Main idea vs supporting detail
The main idea is the single claim the whole passage exists to support; a supporting detail is evidence for it. A common wrong option is a true detail lifted from one paragraph and offered as the main idea; another is a claim broader than the passage actually covers. Test: would removing this sentence collapse the passage, or just weaken one paragraph? Topic sentences and the final paragraph usually carry the main idea.
How do you work out vocabulary in context?
Read the word's own sentence, then predict a replacement before looking at the options, and only then pick the closest match. Use signal words: 'but', 'however' and 'although' signal contrast with the previous idea; 'because', 'therefore' and 'thus' signal cause. The most common trap is the word's usual dictionary meaning where the passage uses a secondary sense, so let the sentence, not memory, decide.
Percentage increase and decrease as a single multiplier
An increase of r percent means multiply by (1 + r/100); a decrease means multiply by (1 - r/100). A 15 percent rise is x 1.15; a 15 percent fall is x 0.85. Chain them by multiplying: up 20 percent then down 20 percent is 1.2 x 0.8 = 0.96, a 4 percent net LOSS, not a return to the start. This single habit removes most percentage errors under time pressure.
Percentage change formula - and why the base matters
Percentage change = (new - old) / OLD x 100. The denominator is always the original value, which is why a rise from 40 to 50 is +25 percent but a fall from 50 to 40 is -20 percent. The same absolute change gives different percentages depending on direction. When a question mentions two different bases, write down which value is 'old' before you calculate anything.
How do you recover the original value after a percentage change?
Divide, do not subtract. If a price is $85 after a 15 percent discount, the original is 85 / 0.85 = $100. Subtracting 15 percent of 85 gives $97.75, which is wrong because the discount applied to the original, not the reduced price. Same rule for growth: a figure of 138 after a 15 percent increase started at 138 / 1.15 = 120.
How do you split a quantity in a given ratio?
Add the parts to get the total number of shares, divide the quantity by that total to get one share, then multiply. Split $240 in the ratio 3:5 - eight shares, one share = $30, so $90 and $150. Check by adding back to the original total. Watch the difference between 'the ratio of A to B is 3:5' (parts of a whole) and 'A is 3/5 of B' (a direct fraction).
Mean, and the averaging-the-averages trap
Mean = total of all values / number of values. Always rebuild the total first: to find a missing value, multiply the mean by the count and subtract what you know. Never average two averages unless the groups are the same size - the mean of a group of 4 averaging 10 and a group of 6 averaging 20 is (40 + 120) / 10 = 16, not 15. Median is the middle value once sorted; mode is the most frequent.
Fraction, decimal and percentage conversions worth memorising
1/2 = 0.5 = 50 percent; 1/3 = 0.333 = 33.3 percent; 1/4 = 0.25 = 25 percent; 1/5 = 0.2 = 20 percent; 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5 percent; 2/3 = 0.667 = 66.7 percent; 3/4 = 0.75 = 75 percent. To convert a fraction, divide top by bottom and multiply by 100. Recognising these on sight converts several arithmetic questions into one-step recall instead of long division.
Speed, distance and time - and unit discipline
Distance = speed x time; speed = distance / time; time = distance / speed. The errors come from units, not the formula: convert minutes to hours before using km/h (45 minutes = 0.75 h), and never mix metres with kilometres in one calculation. For average speed over a journey, divide TOTAL distance by TOTAL time - do not average the two speeds.
Order of operations (BODMAS/BIDMAS)
Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication left to right, then Addition and Subtraction left to right. Division and multiplication rank equally, as do addition and subtraction, so work left to right within each pair rather than doing all multiplication first. 20 - 4 x 3 = 8, not 48. A minus sign in front of a bracket flips every sign inside it when the bracket is removed.
Estimation as a checking tool under time pressure
Round each value to one significant figure, compute the rough answer, then eliminate options that are the wrong order of magnitude. 19.7 percent of 412 is about 20 percent of 400 = 80, so an option near 8 or 800 is a decimal-place error. Estimation is fastest where options are widely spaced, and it catches the most common arithmetic mistake in timed tests, which is a misplaced decimal point.
Necessary condition vs sufficient condition
A necessary condition must be true for the outcome, but does not by itself produce it. A sufficient condition guarantees the outcome. Meeting the height standard is necessary for eligibility as a Firefighter candidate; it is nowhere near sufficient, because age, character, certificates and every later stage also apply. Test wording: 'only if' introduces a necessary condition, 'if' introduces a sufficient one.
Why does 'If P then Q, Q is true, therefore P' fail?
That is affirming the consequent, an invalid pattern. 'If a candidate passes the examination, they are listed in merit order' does not mean everyone on a list passed that examination - some other route could put them there. The valid moves are only two: P is true so Q is true, or Q is false so P is false. Testing an argument means hunting for one case where the premises hold and the conclusion fails.
The contrapositive, and why it is the only free reversal
'If P then Q' is logically identical to 'If not Q then not P'. It is NOT identical to 'If Q then P' (the converse) or 'If not P then not Q' (the inverse). From 'if you are appointed, you passed the medical', you may conclude 'if you did not pass the medical, you were not appointed' - and nothing else. Reach for the contrapositive whenever a question gives you a negative fact.
What can you conclude from 'All A are B' and 'Some B are C'?
Nothing about A and C. 'All' allows a one-way conclusion only: every A is a B, but not every B is an A. 'Some' means at least one and possibly all, so 'some B are C' is compatible with no A being C. 'No A are B' is the only statement that reverses freely, since no B are A as well. Sketch two overlapping circles and try to build a counterexample before accepting any option.
A method for number sequences
Work through four tests in order: first differences; second differences if the first are not constant; ratios for multiplication or division patterns; then alternating patterns where odd and even positions follow separate rules. If none fits, check for squares, cubes, primes, or a term built from the two before it. Write the differences under the sequence rather than holding them in your head.
How should you attack an odd-one-out item?
State the rule that links the majority BEFORE looking for the exception, and check that exactly one item breaks it. If two items break your rule, the rule is wrong, not the question. Beware of a rule you can only see after choosing an answer - that is confirmation, not reasoning. Where two defensible rules exist, prefer the one based on an intrinsic property over a superficial one such as word length.
How do you solve an ordering or seating puzzle efficiently?
Place the certain constraints first - fixed positions and blocks that must sit together - then apply the negative constraints to eliminate slots. Draw the line of positions once and pencil possibilities into each. Distinguish 'immediately before' from 'before', and 'next to' from 'to the left of'; those two confusions cause most errors. When two arrangements survive, check whether the question only needs what is true in both.
What should you check first when reading a table or schedule?
The row and column headings, the units, and any footnote or 'per' qualifier, before touching a number. Most table errors are reading the wrong cell or missing that figures are in thousands, percentages rather than counts, or a subtotal rather than a total. Re-read the exact ask - 'increase' is not 'total', and 'percentage of the column' is not 'percentage of the whole table'.
What are the statutory purposes of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service?
Section 3A of the Fire Service Act Chap. 35:50 lists four: to save and protect life or property from damage or destruction by fire or other hazards, whether fire related or not; to provide and advise on preventive measures; to render related humanitarian services where required; and to conduct investigations to ascertain the cause or origin of a fire or other hazard requiring the Service. Prevention and investigation are statutory duties, not extras.
'Two Divisions' or 'four divisions' - which is right for the TTFS?
Both, in different senses. Section 5 of the Fire Service Act says the Service consists of two Divisions: the First Division (Second Schedule: Chief Fire Officer down to Third Officer) and the Second Division (Third Schedule: the Firefighter and station-officer ranks). The Ministry of National Security separately describes four geographic divisions - Northern, Southern, Central and Tobago. One is a rank structure in law; the other is operational geography.
What is the promotion ladder above Firefighter, and what does it require?
Firefighter, then Fire Sub-Officer, Fire Sub-Station Officer, Fire Station Officer or Fire Equipment Supervisor, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer, Divisional Fire Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer. Under Regulation 6, a Fire Sub-Officer candidate needs four or more years' service plus a job-related written examination AND a practical examination set by the Examinations Board; Regulation 7 requires at least seven years' service for Fire Sub-Station Officer.
How does the Examinations Board differ from the Public Service Commission entrance examination?
The Examinations Board is appointed in writing by the Minister under Regulation 14 and sets promotion examinations for serving officers at least once a year, placing candidates in order of merit; a candidate applies in writing and pays a fee fixed by the Minister by Notice in the Gazette, at the Comptroller of Accounts or a District Revenue Office. The Firefighter Grade 1 entrance examination is a different exercise, set and managed by the Public Service Commission, and no candidate fee for it is published.
Trinidad and Tobago emergency numbers, and the legislation behind the Fire Service
Fire 990, Police 999, Ambulance 811, ODPM 511. The Service operates under the Fire Service Act Chap. 35:50, with terms of employment in the Fire Service (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations 1998 (Legal Notice 267 of 1998); the Auxiliary Fire Service Act is Chap. 35:54. Trinidad and Tobago became independent in 1962 and a republic in 1976, with a Parliament of an elected House of Representatives and a 31-member appointed Senate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official syllabus for the TT Fire Service entrance examination?
No. The October 2025 Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service recruitment advertisement, the Service Commissions Department notices, the SCD interview-and-exam-dates page and the Ministry of National Security Fire Service page reviewed on 25 July 2026 confirm that an entrance examination exists and that the Public Service Commission sets and manages it, but none of them publishes a syllabus, subject list or topic weighting. These flashcards therefore split into two parts: statements of officially documented process and eligibility rules, and transferable English, numerical and reasoning skills. The skills topics are our editorial choice, not an official blueprint, and no percentage weight should be attached to them.
How many questions are on the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service entrance exam?
No official Trinidad and Tobago source reviewed for this set publishes a question count, and neither does any source publish the duration, the delivery mode, whether items are multiple choice, or whether wrong answers are penalised. Our free practice bank for this exam contains 100 original questions; that is our inventory, not evidence about the Commission's paper. Your candidate notification from the Public Service Commission, issued through the Director of Personnel Administration, is the only document that states the actual sitting instructions.
What is the pass mark for the TT Fire Service entrance examination?
No pass percentage is published on the official pages reviewed for this set. Item 7 of the October 2025 recruitment advertisement says candidates who are successful in the entrance examination are listed in order of merit by the Public Service Commission, and that those selected are required to undergo a Physical Aptitude Test. That wording describes a competitive ranking, so a widely repeated fifty percent claim has no official source behind it. Prepare to place well on a merit list rather than to clear a fixed threshold.
Can I retake the entrance examination if I am unsuccessful?
No re-sit or waiting-period rule is published for this examination, and no official source states that a candidate may retake it within the same recruitment exercise. The advertisement describes a single screening process tied to one intake, so in practice an unsuccessful candidate would need to apply again when the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service advertises a new Firefighter recruitment exercise. Any retake number you see quoted elsewhere, including on this page's data fields, should not be treated as an official policy, because the Commission has published none.
When is the next Firefighter Grade 1 entrance examination?
As of 25 July 2026, the Service Commissions Department interview-and-exam-dates page lists no Firefighter Grade 1 entrance-examination date; the nearest entries shown are unrelated offices such as Immigration Officer I. The SCD latest-news page carries Firefighter Grade 1 applicant listings and document-verification notices for the October 2025 intake. Public Service Commission Regulation 150(1) requires the Director of Personnel Administration to notify candidates of the place, date and time for selection, so your own emailed notification controls, not a public page.
Who sets the entrance examination, and who runs the later stages?
Item 6 of the October 2025 advertisement states that the entrance examination is set and managed by the Public Service Commission. The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service runs the later stages: the Fire Service School administers the Physical Aptitude Test, a TTFS selection committee conducts the interview, and a Government Medical Officer conducts the medical examination. This split matters because instructions about the written examination come through the Commission and the Service Commissions Department, not through TTFS social media.
Do these flashcards cover the physical aptitude test?
Only its official framing. No reviewed Trinidad and Tobago source publishes the Physical Aptitude Test's event list, equipment, carry weights, distances, time limits, pass criteria or retest rules, so this set states who administers it and where it sits in the sequence rather than inventing a protocol. Do not substitute the United States CPAT or a United Kingdom practical aptitude test; those standards have no legal application in Trinidad and Tobago. Build general aerobic, loaded-carry and grip capacity, and take medical advice before increasing training load.
Which official documents should I read before sitting?
Four. The October 2025 Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service recruitment advertisement on nationalsecurity.gov.tt for the intake sequence and candidate instructions. The Fire Service (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations 1998, made under the Fire Service Act Chap. 35:50, for height, age, character, education, medical and probation rules. The Public Service Commission Regulations, especially Regulations 149 and 150, for how candidates are notified and how merit is determined. And your own candidate notification, which overrides every general checklist.
