Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SHRM-CP exam pass rate?
SHRM published a 68% global SHRM-CP pass rate for the May–July 2025 administration but does not release ongoing pass-rate statistics. Scores are reported on a 120–200 scaled range, and a scaled score of 200 is required to pass. The exam contains 134 items: 80 stand-alone HR knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items. Firm sponsorship is not required to sit for the exam.
How is the SHRM-CP exam structured and timed?
The SHRM-CP is delivered by Prometric as a computer-based test. It has two sections of 110 minutes each (3 hours 40 minutes of testing) inside a roughly 4-hour appointment with an optional break between sections. Knowledge items test recall and application of HR concepts, while situational judgment items present workplace scenarios and ask which response is most effective for an HR professional.
What is the SHRM BASK?
The SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK) is the official content outline for SHRM certification. It defines eight behavioral competencies grouped into three clusters — Leadership, Interpersonal, and Business — plus HR functional knowledge organized into three domains: People, Organization, and Workplace. The SHRM-CP weights behavioral clusters at roughly 50% and HR knowledge domains at roughly 50% of the scored content.
Do I need a degree or HR experience to take the SHRM-CP?
No. SHRM does not require a specific degree or a minimum number of years of HR experience to apply for the SHRM-CP, and no firm sponsorship is needed. SHRM recommends candidates have working knowledge of HR practices or hold a degree from an academically aligned program before testing. Application approval and an Authorization to Test are required before scheduling at Prometric.
What happens if I do not pass the SHRM-CP?
SHRM administers the exam in defined testing windows rather than on demand. Candidates who do not pass must submit a new application and pay the full exam fee to retest in a future testing window; only one SHRM exam attempt is allowed per window. There is no fixed day-count waiting period like FINRA exams — eligibility to retake is governed by the next available testing window.
How is the SHRM-CP different from the PHR?
The SHRM-CP is administered by SHRM and assesses behavioral competencies alongside HR knowledge, using situational judgment items to test real-world decision-making. The PHR is administered by HRCI and emphasizes technical HR knowledge with traditional multiple-choice questions. Both are widely recognized; the SHRM-CP's competency model is its defining feature relative to knowledge-only credentials.
