Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SPLE (Pharmacist) exam and who administers it?
The Saudi Pharmacist Licensure Examination (SPLE) is the mandatory computer-based licensure exam for pharmacists who want to practice or enter postgraduate training in Saudi Arabia. It is developed and administered by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) and delivered at Prometric test centers. Candidates must first obtain SCFHS professional classification and an exam eligibility number through the Mumaris+ platform before scheduling a test date.
What is the passing score for the SPLE pharmacist exam?
The SCFHS Central Assessment Committee set the SPLE passing score at 536 on a reporting scale of 200 to 800, which is roughly equivalent to 67% correct. This is a criterion-referenced cut score set through a formal standard-setting process, not a fixed percentage of items answered correctly on every form of the exam.
How many questions are on the SPLE and how long is it?
The SPLE contains 200 scored multiple-choice questions, delivered in two parts of 100 questions each, plus up to 10% additional pilot (unscored) items that are not identified to candidates. Total testing time is 4 hours 30 minutes: two 120-minute parts with a scheduled 30-minute break between them, a structure in effect since March 1, 2023.
What topics does the SPLE blueprint cover?
The SPLE blueprint has four content areas: Basic Biomedical Sciences (10%) covering physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology and genetics; Pharmaceutical Sciences (35%) covering pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics and pharmaceutical calculations; Social/Behavioral/Administrative Sciences (20%) covering Saudi pharmacy law, pharmacovigilance, pharmacoeconomics, management and ethics; and Clinical Sciences (35%) covering therapeutics, patient assessment and clinical decision-making. Weights may vary by up to plus or minus 5%.
What happens if I fail the SPLE, and how many times can I retake it?
SCFHS's classification-exam retake policy gives candidates who fail their first attempt two additional attempts, and exam opportunities may be repeated up to one year from the date of the first attempt if a passing score still is not achieved. Candidates cannot sit for the exam twice within the same testing window. Unlike some Western licensing bodies, SCFHS does not publish a fixed day-count waiting period between attempts, so always confirm current retake rules on the official SCFHS Mumaris+ portal before scheduling a retake.
Do I need employer sponsorship to sit for the SPLE?
No. The SPLE does not require firm or employer sponsorship the way some finance-industry exams do. Instead, eligibility is based on SCFHS professional classification requirements (accredited pharmacy degree, required internship/training hours, and document verification) processed through the Mumaris+ platform, after which candidates schedule their test directly through Prometric.
