What does an environmental scan contribute to HR planning?
It identifies external trends that may affect people needs, such as technology, demographics and economic conditions. Record the possible workforce opportunity or risk and bring relevant evidence to the supervisor.
How does a mission statement differ from a vision statement?
A mission describes the organization's current purpose; a vision describes the future it seeks. HR tasks should support that purpose and future direction, with priorities checked against organizational goals.
What should you do when a personal interest could affect an HR decision?
Disclose the conflict or potential conflict to the relevant stakeholders. Withdraw or put arrangements in place that preserve objective judgment; disclosure alone does not justify a biased decision.
Who should receive access to confidential HR records?
Only people who are entitled to the information and need it for their role. Use the applicable authorization and safeguards, and share no more than the legitimate purpose requires.
What makes an HR information source credible?
Check who produced it, the evidence and method behind it, its currency and relevance, and possible bias. A confident claim or a widely shared webpage is not a substitute for supporting evidence.
How do quantitative and qualitative HR evidence differ?
Quantitative evidence measures amounts or patterns, such as attendance counts. Qualitative evidence explores experiences and explanations, such as interview themes. Combining them can help explain both the size and the nature of a problem.
What should a record of an HR decision explain?
Record the relevant facts, options considered, decision and reasons for choosing it. This makes the reasoning traceable and helps a supervisor review whether the decision was justified.
What does balancing stakeholder interests mean in HR work?
Consider the needs and perspectives of all affected parties, including employees and the organization. Explain trade-offs and use objective evidence while respecting professional obligations; agreement from everyone is not always possible.
What is an organization's span of control?
The number of direct reports assigned to a manager. A wider span can reduce management layers but increases supervisory demands; suitability depends on task complexity, employee capability and available support.
How does employee productivity differ from output alone?
Productivity relates output to the resources used, such as labour time. More completed work does not necessarily mean greater productivity if the labour input increased even faster; use comparable definitions and periods.
Why check participation before interpreting an engagement survey?
A low or uneven response can leave important employee groups underrepresented. Review response coverage and confidentiality safeguards before treating the results as the view of the whole workforce.
What should a change-risk log capture?
Record a risk that could prevent the change from succeeding, its likely effect, planned response and responsible person. For example, missing training can prevent staff from using a new process correctly.
What should you examine when a team repeatedly misses hand-offs?
Examine role clarity, communication, dependencies and agreed working norms before blaming an individual. A team problem may arise from how work is coordinated rather than from one person's technical skill.
How does job enrichment differ from job enlargement?
Enlargement adds more or different tasks. Enrichment increases responsibility, independence or participation in decisions. Adding extra routine tasks alone does not necessarily enrich a job.
How can you check whether an HR message was effective?
Check whether the intended audience received and understood it and could take the intended action. Delivery or email-open counts alone do not establish understanding.
What does a current talent-gap assessment compare?
Compare the skills and capabilities needed now with those currently available. Compile evidence by role or team so a supervisor can distinguish a skills gap from a simple headcount shortage.
What is an employee value proposition?
The overall value an organization offers people in return for their contribution, such as meaningful work, rewards, development and workplace experience. It should reflect actual employment conditions rather than an unsupported recruiting promise.
What makes a selection interview structured?
Use predetermined, job-related questions and a consistent rating scheme across candidates. Record evidence against the criteria so interviewers can compare qualifications without relying mainly on personal impressions.
How does selection-test reliability differ from validity?
Reliability concerns consistency of measurement. Validity concerns evidence supporting the intended interpretation and use, such as predicting job performance. A test can give consistent scores while measuring something irrelevant to the job.
What is onboarding meant to achieve beyond paperwork?
Help a new employee understand the role, organizational culture, work relationships and practical procedures. Access, orientation and role-specific support help the person contribute safely and effectively.
What makes a performance objective assessable?
Specify the expected result, a way to measure it and a timeframe, with expectations relevant to the role. 'Improve service' is less assessable than a clearly defined service outcome with an agreed deadline.
How does succession planning differ from naming a replacement?
Succession planning identifies important future roles, assesses potential successors and develops their readiness. A replacement list identifies possible backups but does not by itself close development gaps.
Why check the collective agreement before applying a workplace policy?
The collective agreement sets negotiated employment terms for the represented group. Read the relevant provisions and grievance process; an internal policy should not be assumed to replace negotiated terms.
What do natural-justice principles contribute to a workplace process?
They support a fair opportunity to understand and respond to concerns and an impartial assessment. Gather relevant facts and examine inconsistent treatment rather than treating an allegation as a proven finding.
How does a bargaining position differ from an underlying interest?
A position is a stated demand; an interest is the need behind it. Exploring interests can reveal options that meet important needs even when the parties' opening demands conflict.
How does mediation differ from grievance arbitration?
A mediator helps parties seek their own settlement. An arbitrator determines the dispute; Ontario collective-agreement arbitration provides final and binding settlement of agreement disputes. Combined mediation-arbitration can use both approaches.
What information should support preparation for labour negotiations?
Compile relevant agreement terms, internal workforce and cost data, and external conditions. Check accuracy and document assumptions so the negotiating team can compare options using a reliable factual base.
What is a structural barrier to inclusion?
A rule or process that unnecessarily limits participation by some groups, even without an openly hostile intention. Review evidence about the process, such as inaccessible application steps, rather than assuming equal wording ensures equal access.
What belongs in a total rewards package?
Compensation, pensions, benefits and other employment rewards or perquisites. Review the whole package when explaining its value; base salary alone does not describe everything an employee receives.
How does internal pay fairness differ from external pay competitiveness?
Internal equity compares pay relationships within the organization. External competitiveness compares rewards with relevant labour-market employers. They answer different questions and both inform a rewards structure.
What makes salary-survey data a useful comparison?
Compare genuinely similar work, relevant markets and consistent reward definitions, and check the date and sample. Matching job titles alone can conceal differences in responsibility or compensation components.
Why can an incentive based only on output quantity backfire?
People may increase the measured quantity while neglecting quality, safety or collaboration. Examine whether rewarded behaviour actually supports the desired work outcome and monitor unintended effects.
What evidence helps evaluate a rewards structure?
Use defined measures such as attraction, retention, employee understanding and compensation cost. Compare results with the structure's objectives and investigate other causes before crediting pay changes for every outcome.
How should total rewards information be communicated?
Explain what each component provides and use media the intended employees can access and understand. Clear examples and a route for questions are more useful than a list of unfamiliar benefit labels.
How does informal learning differ from a formal course?
Informal learning occurs through work activities, observation, feedback or experience without a structured course. Formal learning uses planned instruction. Both can build capability, but neither automatically proves competence.
What should a learning objective describe?
Describe what the learner should be able to do after learning, in observable terms. This helps choose relevant activities and assess learning rather than merely recording attendance.
What practical information supports training implementation?
Coordinate the schedule, participants, trainer, materials and required resources. Confirm responsibilities and access so delivery can proceed as planned and completion records are usable.
Why is a positive course-satisfaction score not proof of learning?
Satisfaction measures participants' reactions. Assess the intended knowledge or skill separately, using an appropriate test, demonstration or work sample; an enjoyable session may produce little learning.
How does transfer of learning differ from course completion?
Transfer means applying the new knowledge or skill at work. Completion records participation; follow-up observation or work evidence is needed to assess whether behaviour changed in the job.
Which costs should be collected when comparing learning investments?
Include relevant direct costs and staff time, such as trainer fees, materials, facilities, participant time and administration. Use a consistent costing basis and comparison period so one option is not favoured by omitted costs.
How does a workplace hazard differ from risk?
A hazard is a potential source of harm. Risk considers how likely harm is and how serious it could be in the circumstances. Assess exposure and controls rather than ranking hazards by their names alone.
What is the usual hierarchy for controlling workplace hazards?
Start with elimination, then substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. Assess feasibility and use combined controls when needed; the hierarchy is a prevention approach, not a universal statutory checklist.
Why record near misses as well as injuries?
A near miss can reveal a hazard or failed control before someone is harmed. Use reports to investigate contributing conditions and improve prevention; a low injury count alone does not demonstrate effective controls.
Why track safety-training completion separately from competence?
Attendance shows that training was received. Check understanding and the ability to perform the relevant task safely, and monitor workplace practices; a completion record alone does not establish effective risk control.
What is the purpose of a workplace wellness initiative?
Support employees' health and well-being through relevant resources and education. Consider workforce needs, access and participation, and evaluate results; wellness activities complement effective work design and hazard prevention.
What evidence should be available for an HR audit?
Provide the requested policies, procedures, records and implementation evidence. Coordinate access and compile findings so the supervisor can identify strengths and areas needing improvement against the audit criteria.
What should an HRIS requirements list specify?
Identify users' required inputs, outputs, workflows and reporting needs before comparing systems. A feature is useful only if it supports the required work; document priorities rather than choosing from a vendor demonstration alone.
Why must HR metrics use consistent definitions over time?
Changing the population, reporting period or counting rule can create an apparent trend with no real change. Record definitions and reconcile source data before comparing periods or teams.
What checks help keep HR data fit for reporting?
Check completeness, accuracy, duplicates and consistent dates or categories. Resolve discrepancies through the approved process before compiling a report; a precise-looking dashboard can still contain unreliable data.
What should a report on a human capital investment connect?
Connect the resources spent with observed results, the intended objective and the reporting period. State assumptions and limitations so decision-makers can judge the evidence without treating every improvement as caused by the investment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which CHRP exam do these flashcards cover?
They cover foundational concepts for HRPA's Ontario CHRP Knowledge Exam (CHRP-KE). The separate CHRP Employment Law Exam assesses Ontario employment and workplace law. These cards do not represent the CPHR National Knowledge Exam or another country's CHRP qualification.
How many questions are on the CHRP Knowledge Exam?
HRPA publishes 175 four-option multiple-choice questions, including 20–30 unscored test items. The testing time is 3.5 hours in two sections, with a 15-minute break between them. The 50 cards in this resource are independent study material, not the real exam's item count.
Can I choose a remote CHRP Knowledge Exam in 2026?
The standard delivery is in person at a Prometric Test Centre. HRPA considers requests for an accommodation that cannot be provided at a centre, supported by documentation, and extreme-hardship requests. Only approved candidates receive instructions for testing outside a centre.
What must I complete before taking the CHRP Knowledge Exam?
Be an active HRPA member or student registrant and obtain confirmation of the education or equivalent requirement through one of the four routes. Earning the CHRP designation also requires an accepted knowledge exam, an accepted Employment Law Exam and the Job Ready Program. The CHRP has no separate degree requirement.
Is there a fixed passing percentage or a guaranteed pass rate?
The CHRP-KE uses one overall cut score and compensatory scoring, with the original standard maintained across forms by equating. HRPA’s May 2026 primary-form report gives pass rates of 58.4% overall and 65.3% for its defined first-time cohort (n=320). These dated cohort results do not establish a fixed passing percentage or predict a future candidate’s outcome.
How often can I retake the CHRP Knowledge Exam?
HRPA states there is no attempt limit while your eligibility remains valid. Its public pages do not specify a fixed day interval or a special wait after three failures. Use the published testing windows and confirm registration eligibility with HRPA.
