Working load limit (WLL)

Centre of gravity in a lift

Inspect slings, hooks, shackles, fittings, tags, and attachment points before a lift. Remove damaged or unidentifiable rigging from service.
Purpose of a tag line
A tag line helps guide a suspended load from a safer position. It does not make it safe to stand beneath, pinch, or ride the load.
One designated signal person
Using one designated signal person avoids conflicting directions to the operator. Emergency stop signals must be understood and acted on immediately.
Prime mover
A prime mover converts an energy source into mechanical output. Examples include electric motors, internal-combustion engines, and turbines.
Radial versus thrust bearing load
Radial load acts perpendicular to a shaft. Thrust load acts along the shaft's axis; bearing selection must match the load direction.

Coupling function
A coupling transmits torque between shafts while accommodating the limited movement or misalignment allowed by its design.
Parallel versus angular misalignment
Parallel misalignment means shaft centre lines are offset. Angular misalignment means shaft centre lines meet at an angle. Both can overload bearings and couplings.
Belt tension: too loose
An under-tensioned belt can slip, heat up, wear quickly, and lose transmitted power. Set tension to the manufacturer or site specification.
Chain drive lubrication
Proper lubricant reaches the chain's pin-and-bushing surfaces, where articulation causes wear. External coating alone does not protect those loaded joints well.
Gear backlash
Backlash is the clearance between mating gear teeth. Some clearance is needed for lubrication and thermal expansion; too much can increase shock and positioning error.
Why gear reducers need the correct lubricant
Gear lubricant must provide the required film, wear protection, and temperature performance. The wrong grade or contamination can shorten gear and bearing life.
Key and keyway purpose
A key transfers torque between a shaft and hub. The fit must suit the design; a loose or damaged keyway can cause fretting and failure.
Clutch versus brake
A clutch connects rotating members to transmit power. A brake resists motion to slow, stop, or hold a member.
Thermal growth in shaft alignment
Machines can move as they heat up. Cold alignment targets may need an offset so shafts align correctly at operating temperature.
Maintenance history in a CMMS
A computerized maintenance management system records work history, inspections, parts, and recurring faults. Useful history supports better maintenance planning and failure analysis.
Cavitation in a pump
Cavitation occurs when local pressure falls enough for vapour bubbles to form and collapse. It can cause noise, vibration, loss of performance, and damage.
Centrifugal versus positive-displacement pump
A centrifugal pump uses an impeller to add velocity and pressure. A positive-displacement pump traps and moves a fixed volume each cycle or revolution.
Why prime a centrifugal pump?
A centrifugal pump generally needs its casing and suction path filled with liquid before it can develop the pressure needed to move liquid reliably.
Fan affinity principle
For a given fan system, increasing rotational speed increases airflow approximately in proportion to speed. Confirm equipment limits before changing speed.
Compressed-air receiver purpose
A receiver stores compressed air, dampens pressure fluctuations, and gives moisture a place to separate before downstream use.
Why use intercooling in multistage compression?
Cooling air between stages reduces its temperature and specific volume, which lowers the work required for later compression and protects equipment.
Pipe strain
Pipe strain is force or moment transferred from piping into equipment nozzles. It can distort casings, upset alignment, and damage seals or bearings.
Conveyor belt tracking

A relief valve limits maximum system pressure by opening at its set pressure and diverting flow. It is a protective device, not a normal speed-control method.
Directional control valve (DCV)

Hydraulic accumulator

FRL unit
A pneumatic filter-regulator-lubricator conditions compressed air: filter removes contaminants, regulator sets pressure, and lubricator is used only where specified.
Moisture in compressed air
Water in compressed air can corrode components, wash away lubricant, freeze at restrictions, and contaminate the process. Drains and dryers control it.
Vacuum actuator force
A vacuum system does not pull with negative pressure alone; atmospheric pressure creates the net force across a pressure difference.
Preventive versus predictive maintenance
Preventive maintenance follows planned intervals or conditions. Predictive maintenance uses condition data to detect developing defects and target work before failure.
