Frequently Asked Questions
What domains are tested on the BCCCP exam?
The BCCCP exam covers three domains: Critical Care Practice (23%), which includes critical illness pathophysiology, ICU devices, and hemodynamic monitoring; Therapeutics and Patient Management (57%), covering treatment planning, disease-specific pharmacotherapy, and monitoring; and Professional Practice (20%), covering medication safety, quality improvement, and practice management/scholarship.
How many questions are on the BCCCP exam and how long do I have?
The BCCCP exam has 150 total questions: 125 scored and 25 unscored pretest items that are not identified to the candidate. You have 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the computer-based exam at a Pearson VUE test center. Scoring is scaled from 200-800, with 500 required to pass.
What happens if I fail the BCCCP exam?
BPS allows up to two retakes (three total attempts): after a failed attempt there is a 90-day washout, followed by a scheduling/completion window (all attempts must finish by the testing window's close, roughly a 180-day ceiling). If you do not pass after the third attempt, you must wait 12 months from your last attempt before submitting a new application and paying the full application fee again.
How long is BCCCP certification valid?
BCCCP certification is valid for 7 years. Recertification can be completed either by retaking and passing the certification exam or by earning 100 units of BPS-approved continuing education (80 assessed CPE units plus up to 20 self-reported CPD units for cycles beginning in 2024 or later).
What are the BCCCP eligibility requirements?
Candidates need an active pharmacist license and one of three pathways: 4 years of post-licensure practice with at least 50% time in critical care pharmacy, a PGY1 residency plus 2 additional years of critical care practice, or completion of a PGY2 residency in critical care pharmacy.
Which domain should I prioritize when studying for BCCCP?
Therapeutics and Patient Management is the largest domain at 57% of the exam, so disease-specific pharmacotherapy (sepsis, sedation, cardiology, pulmonology, neurocritical care, renal/electrolytes, toxicology, and hematology/endocrine emergencies) deserves the most study time. Critical Care Practice (23%) and Professional Practice (20%) round out the blueprint.
