Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pass mark and format of the Dubai Municipality PIC food safety exam?

The PIC exam is multiple-choice, offered in English and Arabic, with a 60% pass mark. It typically runs about 2 hours for the Level 3/supervisory PIC programme and is taken after completing an accredited Dubai Municipality-approved food safety course. Dubai Municipality does not publish the exact number of exam questions.

What happens if I fail the Dubai PIC exam?

One re-examination is allowed, arranged directly through your accredited training provider. If the re-examination is also failed, you must complete the full accredited training course again before you can sit the exam once more. Dubai Municipality does not publish a fixed mandatory waiting period between attempts - timing depends on your training provider's exam schedule.

How long is the Dubai PIC certificate valid, and is refresher training required?

The PIC certificate is valid for 5 years. Certified PICs should complete refresher training before the end of year 3 to keep their food safety knowledge current and remain compliant with Dubai Municipality requirements.

What topics does the Dubai PIC exam cover?

The exam covers the Dubai Food Code and HACCP-based food safety management, temperature control (danger zone, cooking, cooling, hot-holding), personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, cleaning and disinfection, pest control, and the PIC's supervision and record-keeping duties.

Who is required to hold a Dubai Municipality PIC certification?

Every food establishment in Dubai must designate at least one trained, certified Person-In-Charge (PIC) accountable for implementing and monitoring food safety day to day. High-risk or specialised food operations require an Advanced PIC Certification, which adds a HACCP module on top of the standard PIC course.
