Notary Fees in North Carolina

Under G.S. 10B-31, North Carolina law establishes maximum fees that notaries may charge for notarial acts. Notaries may charge less than the maximum but may NEVER charge more.

Travel Fees

Notaries may charge for travel if:

• The travel is agreed to by the principal in writing BEFORE the travel
• The rate does not exceed the current IRS standard mileage rate
• Travel is calculated one-way (not round trip)

Example 1: Single Signature

One person signs an acknowledgment = $10 maximum

Example 2: Multiple Signatures

Three people each sign an acknowledgment = $30 maximum ($10 x 3)

Example 3: Multiple Documents

One person signs 3 separate documents with acknowledgments = $30 maximum ($10 x 3 signatures)

Example 4: Electronic Notarization

Two people each sign an electronic acknowledgment = $30 maximum ($15 x 2)

Example 5: Remote Online Notarization

One person signs a document via RON = $25 maximum

Fee Posting

While not strictly required, it is good practice for notaries to:

• Post their fee schedule visibly
• Inform principals of fees before notarization
• Provide receipts if requested
