Start Here: The CAE Test Is Not the PAF Test Most Free Material Prepares You For
If you registered for the 108 Aeronautical Engineering Course during the window that ran from 22 July to 03 August 2026, your registration slip now carries a test date, a time, and an assigned Information & Selection Centre. The question that matters between now and that date is not "what is the PAF initial test like" — it is "what is the CAE initial test like," because those are different tests.
Here is the single most important preparation fact, and almost no free preparation page states it plainly: Aeronautical Engineering is the only 2026 PAF officer course whose academic test includes Mathematics. PAF's 2026 induction advertisement sets out its e-testing subjects branch by branch. General Duty Pilot, Air Defence, Admin & Special Duties and Logistics candidates sit English and Physics. CAE candidates sit English, Physics and Mathematics. Combined Support Course applicants sit an academic test in their own relevant subject.
That one line reshapes your whole plan. The enormous stock of free "PAF initial test" material online — quiz banks, PDF notes, YouTube playlists, past-paper compilations — is overwhelmingly built for GD Pilot and airman candidates. It drills intelligence, English and physics, and where it includes mathematics at all, it is usually matric-level arithmetic, ratios and percentages. If you prepare from that material, you will walk into the centre having never practised the FSc calculus, conics and vectors that the CAE syllabus actually names.
Know Which Facts Are Official, Which Are Reported, and Which Are Anecdote
Search results for this test are full of confident tables. They disagree with each other, and they rarely say where a number came from. Before you build a plan on any figure, sort it into a tier.

Coaching pages publish precise-looking splits — 100 intelligence questions, 50 questions per academic section, 25 or 35 minutes each, a 70% cutoff. Those figures circulate widely and may well reflect what some candidates experienced, but Pakistan Air Force does not publish an official item count, section timing, or passing mark for this test. One live example of why tiering matters: prep sites currently disagree about the minimum height for this course, with some listing 163 cm for male applicants and others 165 cm. Only the advertisement you applied under settles it. The same discipline applies to every number below.
Mathematics: The Section You Have Probably Not Practised
PAF advertisements that have published the CAE mathematics syllabus name the full intermediate course, referencing Mathematics Books I and II from the Punjab Textbook Board:

- Matrices and determinants
- Quadratic equations; partial fractions
- Sequences and series
- Permutations, combinations and probability
- Mathematical induction and the binomial theorem
- Trigonometric identities for sums and differences of angles
- Trigonometric functions and their graphs; applications of trigonometry
- Inverse trigonometric functions; solving trigonometric equations
- Functions and limits; differentiation; integration
- Introduction to analytic geometry; conic sections
- Linear inequalities and linear programming
- Vectors
That is your FSc syllabus, not a reduced one. Candidates who post about the test afterwards describe it consistently: differentiation and integration questions, conic sections, a few short formula-recall items, and several questions that are straightforward if the formula is in your head and expensive if it is not.
Because the section is short and the clock is tight, the winning skill is recognition, not derivation. Build a one-page formula sheet covering standard derivatives and integrals, the conic-section standard forms and their identifying signs, matrix determinant and inverse rules, the binomial general term, and the trigonometric sum, difference and double-angle identities. Then practise until you can classify a question by its shape in a few seconds — "this is a chain-rule derivative," "this is a definite integral by substitution," "this is an ellipse, so I need a and b."
Work in short mixed sets rather than by chapter. Solving twenty consecutive integration questions builds false confidence; the test will not tell you which method it wants.
Physics: Broad FSc Coverage, Not Deep Derivation
The physics syllabus published in PAF advertisements is similarly the complete intermediate course: measurements; vectors and equilibrium; motion and force; work, power and energy; circular motion; fluid dynamics; oscillations; waves; physical optics; optical instruments; heat and thermodynamics; electrostatics; current electricity; electromagnetism; electromagnetic induction; alternating current; physics of solids; electronics; the dawn of modern physics; atomic spectra; and nuclear physics. The reference given is Physics Books I and II from the Punjab Textbook Board.
Candidate accounts describe a conceptual, breadth-first paper drawn from both FSc years, with electronics questions on diodes, gates and n-type material appearing more often than people expect, and very few heavy numericals. That is good news for your schedule: you are being asked to know the whole book at a working level, not to solve long problems under pressure.
Prioritise definitions, units, the direction and sign conventions, and the one-line relationships that let you eliminate options quickly. Modern physics, atomic spectra and electronics sit at the end of the textbook and are the chapters candidates most often leave unrevised — which makes them a cheap place to gain marks.
English: The Section That Costs Engineers the Most
This is the finding that should change how you allocate your remaining weeks. Across candidate reports from different selection centres, the same judgement recurs: intelligence was manageable, mathematics was comfortable, physics was moderate — and English was the hardest section. One Lahore candidate's summary was blunt: the English portion was the most difficult, prepositions were everywhere, and sentence completion dominated.
An FSc Pre-Engineering student's instinct is to spend the available time on physics and mathematics, because those feel like the "real" engineering subjects and because progress there is satisfying to measure. That instinct is exactly backwards for this test. Physics and mathematics are subjects you have been studying for two years. English grammar, for most candidates on this route, has not been drilled since matric.
Concentrate on the areas candidates name repeatedly:
- Prepositions — the highest-yield single topic. These are learned by exposure and memorisation, not by rules. Work through prepositional-phrase lists daily.
- Active and passive voice — practise the mechanical conversion in both directions across all tenses until it is automatic.
- Sentence completion — usually testing collocation and register rather than obscure vocabulary.
- Tenses, sentence correction, synonyms and antonyms, and spelling — steady maintenance work.
Give English a fixed daily slot rather than whatever time is left over. Twenty focused minutes a day for three weeks will move this section more than a weekend of physics revision will move that one.
Intelligence: A Pacing Problem, Not a Knowledge Problem
Verbal and non-verbal intelligence come first, and the description candidates give is almost unanimous: the questions themselves were easy, but time management was the whole challenge. Odd-one-out items appeared frequently; series questions appeared less often than practice books suggest.
You cannot revise your way to a higher IQ score in three weeks, but you can remove hesitation. Drill the recurring formats — analogies, classification and odd-one-out, coding and decoding, number and letter series, direction sense, matrices, figure series, rotation and spatial classification — until pattern recognition is reflexive. Then practise the discipline that actually earns marks under time pressure: decide fast, and abandon fast. A question you have stared at for forty seconds without traction has already cost you two easier questions elsewhere.
A Four-Week Plan Shaped for CAE
Adapt the span to the date on your slip; the sequence matters more than the calendar.
Week 1 — diagnose. Take an untimed mixed set across all four areas. Log every miss by cause, not just by answer: missing formula, algebra slip, unit error, misread qualifier, vocabulary gap, or rushed guess. Build your mathematics formula sheet this week. Start the daily English slot immediately.
Week 2 — rebuild the weak areas. Work the two weakest topic clusters your log identified, in short sets, still untimed. Finish one full pass of FSc Physics Book I and one of Mathematics Book I. Keep English daily. Add fifteen minutes of intelligence drills.
Week 3 — add the clock. Repeat the same set sizes at a comfortable pace, then at a tighter pace, and compare accuracy. Complete Physics Book II and Mathematics Book II. This is when you learn your personal speed-accuracy trade-off, which is far more useful than memorising someone's unofficial minute table.
Week 4 — mix and taper. Mixed full-length sessions in the test's order, intelligence first and then the academic sections. Review your error log rather than starting new topics. In the final two days, revise the formula sheet and preposition lists only, and sort your documents.
Five Mistakes That Cost CAE Candidates the Initial Test
Studying Chemistry. Some prep pages list Chemistry in the Aeronautical Engineering "test syllabus." That confuses two different things. Chemistry is an eligibility subject — the FSc Pre-Engineering and A-Level routes require it — but the academic test the 2026 advertisement describes for CAE is English, Physics and Mathematics. Hours spent on organic reactions are hours not spent on prepositions.
Preparing from GD Pilot material. As covered above, that material omits your mathematics section entirely and pitches physics for a different candidate. Use it for intelligence and English drills if you like, but do not let it define your syllabus.
Confusing this course with the SSC Engineering Branch. At least one widely shared "PAF Engineering Branch" page mixes the two, opening with FSc entry at ages 16 to 22 and then stating under the same heading that candidates need a four-year BE or BSc with a 2.5 CGPA and PEC registration. Those are two separate inductions with separate courses and separate tests. Check which course number you actually applied for.
Chasing leaked papers. Any file promising guaranteed or repeated live questions is either recycled candidate recall or a sales hook. Recalled questions are useful for one purpose only — spotting a concept worth revising. They do not predict your paper, and no legitimate source sells them. Never send identity documents, registration slips or payments to a study group or an unverified channel.
Treating document day as an afterthought. Candidates report that verification at the centre takes considerable time. Bring originals and attested copies of your matriculation and intermediate mark sheets, your NADRA Smart Card, and your parents' CNICs; if your Smart Card has not been issued, bring the token. If your result is still pending, bring the Hope Certificate from your principal. Arriving short one document can end a cycle that months of study earned.
What Comes After the Initial Test
Knowing the sequence keeps you from studying for the wrong stage. Under the 2026 advertisement, candidates who clear e-testing move to an initial medical examination and interview at their Information & Selection Centre, then to ISSB at Kohat, Gujranwala, Malir or Quetta, then to a final medical examination at the Combined Military Hospital in Lahore, with final selection made by Air Headquarters strictly on overall merit.
Two details are worth fixing in your mind. First, the Flying Aptitude Test applies to General Duty Pilot candidates, not to you — ignore FAT preparation material. Second, ISSB is a distinct, later, multi-day assessment of psychological and leadership qualities; its word-association tests, group tasks and interviews have nothing to do with the initial test. Preparing for ISSB now is preparing for a stage you have not reached.
