Colorado CNA candidates usually search for one thing: what exactly happens on the exam? The answer is two-part. You must pass a written or oral knowledge exam and a clinical skills evaluation, but you also need to understand Colorado-specific training, renewal, background, registry, and reporting expectations.

This Colorado CNA guide uses Credentia as the testing vendor, a $135 combined written-plus-skills fee, 70 written items, 5 skills, 90 minutes for the written test, about 30 minutes for skills, a 70% written passing score, and 100% skills accuracy. It also lists a 75-hour minimum Colorado-approved training requirement and a 2-year renewal cycle.

The Written Exam: What To Prioritize

Physical Care Skills: 64%

This is the score driver. Study activities of daily living, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, hydration, positioning, transfers, ambulation, range of motion, vital signs, infection control, safety, pressure injury prevention, and restorative care. Most written questions ask what the nurse aide should do first, what must be reported, or which action protects resident safety and dignity.

Role Of The Nurse Aide: 26%

This domain covers communication, documentation, residents' rights, legal and ethical behavior, scope of practice, delegation, reporting, abuse and neglect, privacy, and working with the healthcare team. Colorado candidates should be especially clear on what CNAs may observe and report versus what nurses must assess or decide.

Psychosocial Care Skills: 10%

Do not ignore this smaller domain. Study dementia communication, mental health needs, spiritual and cultural care, behavior changes, grief, anxiety, and resident-centered care. The correct answer usually preserves dignity, reduces fear, and reports changes appropriately.

The Skills Exam: Practice Like Performance, Not Reading

The skills exam is where candidates who know the material can still fail. Reading a checklist is not the same as performing the skill under observation. Practice hand hygiene, privacy, resident identification, safety checks, call light placement, bed brakes, infection control, body mechanics, documentation, and verbalization until they are automatic.

Build every skill around the same structure: knock and introduce yourself, identify the resident, explain the procedure, provide privacy, wash hands, prepare supplies, perform the critical steps, maintain safety and dignity, clean up, place the call light, wash hands again, and report/document as required.

Hand washing deserves special attention. If your hand hygiene is inconsistent, every other skill becomes risky.

Colorado-Specific Rules Candidates Miss

Colorado uses Credentia, not every national testing vendor. Create your Credentia Platform account and read the Colorado Candidate Handbook before scheduling. If you previously used Pearson VUE systems, Credentia notes that candidates need a Credentia Platform account.

This Colorado CNA guide lists Colorado-approved CNA training at 75 hours minimum, including theory, lab, and clinical work. It also lists up to 3 attempts within 24 months from application receipt under the Colorado route, retaking only the failed portion, and completing a new approved training program after 3 failures.

Three Weeks To Written And Skills Readiness

Week 2: Skills performance. Practice every clinical skill aloud with a partner using checklist timing. Focus on hand hygiene, privacy, resident safety, body mechanics, infection control, and call light placement. Add Role of the Nurse Aide topics: scope, residents' rights, communication, documentation, abuse reporting, and delegation.

Week 3: Full simulation. Take timed 70-question written sets and run skills in random order. Practice recovering from small mistakes. If you forget a noncritical step, continue calmly. If you forget hand hygiene, privacy, or safety, stop and rebuild the skill routine.

Credentia Scoring and Attempt Traps

Credentia's Colorado NNAAP handbook states that the written exam has 70 multiple-choice items, including 10 pretest items on the revised NNAAP outline. The skills evaluation uses five randomly selected nurse aide skills. You must pass both parts to be listed on the Colorado Nurse Aide Registry.

If you fail the written or oral exam, or the skills evaluation, you retake the part you failed. If you fail either part three times, Credentia says you must complete another training program and retake both parts. The Colorado handbook also lists a 24-month window from application receipt for passing under the Colorado route, so do not let long gaps between attempts consume your eligibility period.

For skills prep, do not chase random videos before the official Colorado skills listing. Use videos only to reinforce the checklist, not to replace it. Hand hygiene, privacy, safety, body mechanics, infection control, call light access, and reporting are not optional performance habits.

Credentia Test-Day Strategy

For written questions, choose the answer that keeps the resident safe, respects rights, stays inside CNA scope, and reports abnormal findings to the nurse. CNAs observe, assist, report, and document. They do not diagnose, prescribe, assess independently, give medications unless specifically trained and allowed, or ignore changes.

For skills, slow is smooth. Narrate what you are doing when appropriate. Maintain privacy. Keep supplies organized. Check bed brakes. Use a gait belt when required. End with call light access and hand hygiene.

Colorado CNA Readiness Check

You are ready when you can score at least 85% on mixed written practice, perform skills without reading the checklist, state normal vital sign ranges, identify what must be reported to the nurse, explain resident rights, demonstrate infection control, and complete random skills without skipping safety steps.
