From certificate to Yoga Alliance membership
Finishing an RYS 200 is not the same as appearing in the Yoga Alliance directory as an RYT 200. The school issues the 200-hour certificate after it assesses you. You then apply on yogaalliance.org, the school confirms the training, and you pay Yoga Alliance's teacher fees. Yoga Alliance membership is separate from school tuition. Yoga Alliance states that RYS tuition commonly runs $1,500 to $5,000+; schools set that price. All members must adhere to the shared Ethical Commitment, complete continuing-education hours, and pay annual membership dues to keep access to Yoga Alliance resources uninterrupted.
First-year fees
For a standard RYT application (not the Experienced Teacher Pathway), Yoga Alliance publishes this first-year total:

Later, if you upgrade a designation (for example, RYT 200 to RYT 500 or to an E-RYT), Yoga Alliance charges a one-time $50 upgrade fee. Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP) is an add-on available to E-RYT members at $20 per year. Application steps and the 14-day school confirmation
Yoga Alliance's RYT Application Guide walks through a confirmation-request workflow. You are not "taking the Yoga Alliance exam" when you apply. You are proving that a registered school already assessed you and issued a certificate.
Compile these materials before you sit down at the site:
- Program start date and exact end date (the end date should match the certificate)
- A digital copy of the training-program certificate and the designation (for example, RYS 200)
- The name of the Registered Yoga School that offered the program
- Payment for the application fee and first-year membership dues
Then follow the published sequence:
- Go to yogaalliance.org, select Join, create your account, and submit contact information.
- Open the Basic Dashboard, choose the Teacher tab, and enter the training start date and exact end date.
- Search for your RYS by name, select the correct result, upload a digital certificate, and click Send Request.
- If you were applying for a credential that requires teaching hours (not RYT 200), you would also log teaching hours here. RYT 200 has none.
- Wait until you receive an email confirmation from your school. Yoga Alliance says this can take up to 14 days.
- After the confirmation email, log back in, complete registration and membership payment (the $115 first-year total), and leave your school a review to finish.
The 14-day wait is the item graduates skip when they assume payment can happen the same night they upload a PDF. If the school has not confirmed, you are not yet an RYT, even if you already paid the school for training.
Continuing education: 75 hours every three years
Once you are registered, all Registered Yoga Teachers must complete 75 hours of continuing education every three years from the date of their initial registration. Yoga Alliance splits that 75 as follows:
- 45 hours teaching yoga, and
- 30 hours of yoga training that is directly related to one of the four Educational Categories
Three rules produce most CE mistakes:
- The clock starts at initial registration, not at the certificate date and not at "when I started teaching." Each CE cycle begins on the date a member finishes registration as an RYT and resets every three years.
- Hours completed before Yoga Alliance registration do not count toward the first CE cycle. A workshop you took during teacher training, or a teaching log from the month before you paid Yoga Alliance, does not pre-load the first cycle.
- Additional hours do not roll over. Extra training hours beyond the 30 required in a three-year period may not roll into the next three-year period.

How you log training hours depends on the provider. If you completed a course with a YACEP (and it was not a Yoga Alliance digital event), you send a confirmation request from the Teacher Dashboard; the YACEP confirms, and Yoga Alliance notes that if confirmation is not back within 10 days you should reach out to that provider. If the instructor is not a YACEP, or you are logging a Yoga Alliance digital event, you assert that the provider met qualifications. Yoga Alliance lists who may offer continuing education: a currently registered YACEP; a currently registered E-RYT 200 or E-RYT 500; or a professional with significant experience—a minimum of 500 hours of teaching in the subject and/or the equivalent of two years of relevant experience—and education in a subject related to at least one Educational Category.
The credential ladder after RYT 200
RYT 200 is the first teacher credential, not the last. School tests often ask which upgrade needs teaching hours and which does not.

Once registered, an E-RYT 500 can provide continuing-education workshops to other teachers and/or serve as a Lead Trainer of a 200-, 300-, or 500-hour teacher training. That is why the previous section required E-RYT 500 on the RYS 200 Lead Trainer row.
The Experienced Teacher Pathway (ETP) is a separate door into E-RYT 500 for teachers who did not attend a Registered Yoga School. Yoga Alliance's published ETP bar includes a minimum of 500 hours of training from no more than three pathways of study, a minimum of 10 years of teaching after the first 200 hours of training, five years of teaching after 300 hours of additional training, and a minimum of 3,000 hours of teaching in multiple modalities, with documentation. ETP is not the standard RYT 200 application and uses the $85 application fee noted above.
