1.1 What RYT 200 Is (and Is Not)

What RYT 200 actually names

Registered Yoga Teacher 200-Hour (RYT 200) is Yoga Alliance's foundational teacher credential. You earn the right to apply for it by graduating from one complete Registered Yoga School 200-Hour (RYS 200) program. The credential tells students, studios, and insurers that you finished a school whose curriculum meets Yoga Alliance's published RYS 200 Standards and that you agreed to Yoga Alliance's Ethical Commitment (the Code of Conduct, Scope of Practice, and Equity in Yoga). It is not a government occupational license, a medical credential, or proof that you passed a national board exam.

This OpenExamPrep chapter is independent study covering RYS 200 topics that school written tests, practical teaching, and observation assessments commonly cover. It is not a Yoga Alliance test, not an official school certificate, and not the separate ISSA Yoga 200-Hour product that some catalogs list as issa-yoga-ryt200.

RYT versus RYS

Keep the two abbreviations straight. They share three letters, and trainees mix them on applications, résumés, and studio bios.

• An RYS (Registered Yoga School) is the school or program Yoga Alliance has registered. The school designs the 200-hour curriculum, hires faculty, assesses you, and issues the 200-hour certificate.
• An RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) is the individual credential you may apply for after that certificate exists. Yoga Alliance reviews the school's confirmation and your application. It does not replace the school as the body that taught and assessed you.
• A Lead Trainer is faculty on an RYS. For elevated RYS 200 programs, every Lead Trainer must hold Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500-Hour (E-RYT 500). Lead Trainer rules belong in the next section; the point here is that the trainer's credential is not the same as your graduate credential.

Yoga Alliance also registers advanced and specialty schools: RYS 300, RYS 500, Registered Children's Yoga School (RCYS), and Registered Prenatal Yoga School (RPYS). Those are different school credentials. Your first teacher credential is almost always RYT 200 after one RYS 200.

One complete 200-hour program

Yoga Alliance's Standards for RYT Credentials are explicit. Teachers obtain RYT 200 after completing a 200-hour yoga teacher training registered with Yoga Alliance. Multiple trainings cannot be combined to meet the 200-hour requirement. That sentence blocks a common workaround: stacking a 50-hour "essentials" weekend, a 40-hour anatomy intensive, and a 110-hour recorded series from three different providers and calling the pile a 200-hour training.

The single-program rule has practical consequences you should be able to explain on a school written test:

1. The start date and end date you enter on the Yoga Alliance application should match the dates on one RYS 200 certificate.
2. A 200-hour program may be delivered in modules—for example, four immersions over six months—if those modules are parts of one registered RYS 200 curriculum at one RYS.
3. Whether a school will accept leftover hours from a withdrawn training is a school policy question. It is not a Yoga Alliance invitation to combine two incomplete programs into one RYT 200 application.
4. The RYT 500 path is different. For RYT 500, Yoga Alliance does allow a RYS 200 plus a separate RYS 300 (same school or different registered schools), or one RYS 500. Do not import that combination rule backward onto RYT 200.

If a marketing page says you can assemble 200 hours from à la carte workshops and then register as RYT 200, treat that claim as a red flag unless the workshops are literally the scheduled modules of one RYS 200.

Yoga Alliance does not give a national written exam

Trainees often ask for "the Yoga Alliance passing score," "how many questions are on the RYT exam," or "the time limit." Yoga Alliance does not administer a national written exam for RYT 200. It does not publish a national passing score, a national question count, a national time limit, or a national pass rate. Any study resource that invents those logistics is describing a different kind of credential—or inventing numbers.

What Yoga Alliance does require is that the school assess competency. The Standards for RYS Credentials state that each RYS program should assess the knowledge, skills, and experiences of its trainees before issuing a 200-hour yoga teacher training certificate. If students cannot demonstrate proficiency in the material taught, programs should not graduate them simply because they completed the seat time.

Schools choose the assessment mix. Typical tools include written or oral tests on anatomy, humanities, and professional topics; a practical teach with faculty feedback; sequencing assignments; observation of teaching and assisting; and journals or philosophy reflections tied to the school's lineage. Those school assessments are what this independent guide prepares you to sit. OpenExamPrep practice questions are study tools, not official Yoga Alliance items and not a substitute for your RYS certificate.

No teaching-hour requirement for RYT 200

RYT 200 has no teaching-hour requirement. Once the school has assessed you and issued the certificate, you may apply. You do not need a log of paid classes, community classes, or studio sub hours to register as RYT 200.

Compare that with later credentials so you do not study the wrong row of the ladder:

Teaching hours you log after registration can later support continuing education (45 teaching hours per three-year cycle) and upgrades. They are not a gate for the first RYT 200 application.

What RYT 200 is not

Use this checklist when a classmate, employer, or social post overclaims the credential:

• Not a national board-exam result and not a published national pass rate
• Not a license to give medical, nutrition, or mental-health advice
• Not an ISSA fitness-course equivalent
• Not permission to combine three short trainings into one 200-hour application
• Not automatic E-RYT status
• Not proof you have already completed continuing education

The Ethical Commitment is something you sign onto at registration. Later chapters cover those documents in depth. For this section, the operational point is simple: RYT 200 names a completed, assessed RYS 200 plus Yoga Alliance registration. It does not name a Yoga Alliance-scored national test.
