1.2 Eligibility: Traditional, Experiential, and WTA-C Credit

Quick Answer: Initial CWCN candidates need a current RN license and a bachelor's degree or higher (WOCNCB accepts all baccalaureate degrees). Then complete one pathway: Traditional (graduate a WOCN® Society-accredited WOC Nursing Education Program within five years of application; the program must have been accredited at graduation) or Experiential (50 specialty CE/CME or college equivalent in the prior five years and 1,500 specialty practice hours in the prior five years, including 375 hours in the year before application). A current WTA-C® may replace 24 wound CE and 160 wound practice hours toward those experiential totals; the remaining CE and hour requirements still apply. This is not the CWCN-AP exam.

Shared requirements for first-time CWCN candidates

Every initial candidate must:

1. Hold a current RN license.
2. Hold a bachelor's (or higher) degree—WOCNCB states that all baccalaureate degrees apply, not only a BSN.
3. Complete either the Traditional pathway or the Experiential pathway (not a mix that skips a required element).
4. Submit documentation through the PSI portal at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/wocncb/.

Hours and CE used for experiential eligibility must be earned after the bachelor's degree while practicing as an RN. An ADN-to-BSN nurse cannot count pre-bachelor RN hours toward the 1,500.

International Traditional candidates may graduate from a WCET recognized program; Canadian candidates may use the NSWOC® WOC-EP. WOCNCB accepts credential-evaluation services (NACES members) to show U.S. equivalency of a four-year bachelor's degree. Developing-country fee rules are in section 1.3.

Traditional pathway

Graduate from a WOC Nursing Education Program accredited by the WOCN® Society. Use the Society's current accredited-program list on wocn.org, not a rumor about a closed school. Two timing rules matter:

• Complete the program within five years of the exam application date. Older graduation pushes you to the Experiential pathway.
• The program must have been accredited at the time of your graduation. Graduating from a program that later became accredited does not satisfy Traditional eligibility.

Traditional applicants upload RN verification, the bachelor's diploma or transcripts, and the WOC education completion document (graduation certificate or diploma).

Experiential pathway

Use this path if you did not graduate from an accredited WOC NEP within five years, or if Traditional timing or accreditation rules do not fit.

Continuing education. For wound, complete 50 CE/CME credits (contact hours) or equivalent college coursework in the five years before application. Credits must directly apply to wound. Professional-practice sessions (leadership, billing, generic "professional issues") are not accepted. Multi-day conferences often mix clinical and professional-practice hours—count only the wound-clinical portion. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) programs usually receive partial credit and are not accepted in their entirety.

Practice hours. Complete 1,500 wound specialty practice hours in the previous five years, including 375 hours in the year before application. If you applied for wound, ostomy, and continence together, WOCNCB requires 4,500 total specialty hours with 1,125 in the prior year (375 × 3). This chapter is CWCN: plan 1,500 / 375 for wound.

Settings that count. Acute care, ambulatory care, long-term care, home care, academics, administrative, industry, and independent practice. The role must be specialty wound (or AP-WOC) practice, not unrelated medical-surgical hours with occasional dressings.

Documentation. Upload CE certificates as one PDF, list courses on the CE verification form, enter total clinical hours, and upload the Employment History Form with supervisor names and contacts for verification of specialty hours over five years.

WTA-C® credit toward CWCN experiential totals

WTA-C® (Wound Treatment Associate-Certified) is a different credential. It is not CWCN and not CWCN-AP. If you currently hold WTA-C, WOCNCB allows it to replace 24 wound CE and 160 wound practice hours toward CWCN Experiential Pathway totals. Those 24 CE and 160 hours must still fall within the five years before application and must have been accumulated after the bachelor's degree and RN license.

The remaining requirements still apply: you still need the full 50 CE and 1,500 hours / 375 in the prior year after applying the substitution. In practice, a WTA-C holder typically still documents 26 additional wound CE (50 − 24) and 1,340 additional wound hours (1,500 − 160), and must still meet the 375-hour recency rule. WTA-C does not replace the RN license, the bachelor's degree, Traditional WOC NEP graduation, or the CWCN exam.

Combined marks vs a single CWCN

Passing only the wound exam awards CWCN®. The CWOCN® (wound + ostomy + continence) and CWON® (wound + ostomy) combined marks require passing the matching specialty exams within 12 months of application. Exams taken outside that 12-month window yield individual credentials (CWCN, COCN, CCCN, and so on) rather than the combined mark. You do not need to sit all specialties on the same day (see section 1.3).

Lapsed credentials and retake vs initial status

PGP recertification is only for currently certified nurses. If the CWCN is lapsed six months or less, WOCNCB describes a one-time grace period to recertify by examination (see the handbook and recertification pages). If the credential is lapsed more than six months, you apply again as an initial candidate—commonly via the Experiential pathway—and you must take the exam. Do not assume a lapsed mark can be restored by portfolio alone.

Retake candidates who failed a recent attempt keep RN licensure current, wait 30 days, and use the retake path on the existing PSI application (details in section 1.3). They do not rebuild Traditional or Experiential files for those in-window retakes.

CWCN vs CWCN-AP

CWCN-AP® is the advanced-practice wound exam with a separate outline and APRN-level eligibility. A staff RN preparing for CWCN should use the CWCN test specifications, not the AP wound outline.

Candidate scenario

Jordan, RN, BA (English), WTA-C, has worked five years as an RN in a hospital wound clinic after completing the bachelor's degree. Jordan never attended a WOC NEP. The WTA-C is current. Jordan lists 48 wound CE in five years, including 8 HBO-course hours and 6 "professional practice" conference hours. After dropping professional-practice hours and taking only partial HBO credit, wound CE falls to 31. WTA-C replaces 24 CE, so Jordan still needs enough additional wound-clinical CE to reach 50. Hours: 1,420 wound hours in five years, 400 in the last year. WTA-C replaces 160 hours, which covers the 80-hour gap to 1,500, and 400 already meets the 375-hour recency rule. Jordan uploads one CE PDF, the employment-history form, RN verification, and the bachelor's diploma in the PSI portal—and studies the CWCN outline, not CWCN-AP.
