5.2 Part 1: Work, Education & Life History Frequency Ratings

Experience Inventory, Part 1 is Section 2 of the SAEE. It contains 64 items in 20 minutes. Each statement describes a situation you may or may not have encountered. Your task is to select the option that best represents how frequently you have been involved in that situation.

Use the Published Four-Option Scale

Page 23 of the official SAEE Preparation Guide gives these options:

There is no fifth “Constantly” option in this published Part 1 scale. Do not substitute “Rarely,” “Sometimes,” or “Very Frequently” for the actual labels. The guide also does not assign percentage ranges, such as 20–40% or 80–100%, to these choices.

If you have not been involved in the situation, choose Never. Otherwise, consider your relevant experiences and select the closest description of their frequency. Follow any context or timeframe in the question. Do not impose an invented rule that every item covers only adult life, paid employment, or a fixed percentage of opportunities.

Read the Whole Situation Before Counting

An original practice prompt might describe coordinating a group deadline. Before selecting a response, identify the action: did you actually coordinate the deadline, or were you simply a member of the group? Then recall occasions that fit. The aim is accurate interpretation, not stretching a familiar experience to fit every favorable statement.

Two isolated occasions are different from a recurring responsibility. Likewise, repeatedly attending an activity is not automatically the same as organizing it. These distinctions help you interpret the wording; they are not extra scoring rules. You do not need to turn your biography into a numerical spreadsheet or calculate percentages that the options never request.

School, volunteer, military, athletic, and workplace experiences may be relevant when they match the statement. Do not assume that only a formal title makes an experience count, or that an impressive title proves a particular action occurred. Use the context actually asked about.

A Steady, Honest Response Routine

Twenty minutes is 1,200 seconds, so 64 items allow 18.75 seconds each on average. The official guide recommends working at a fairly rapid pace without spending excessive time on one statement. Use a simple routine:

1. Read the entire statement, including any qualifiers.
2. Recall relevant experiences without adding imagined ones.
3. Select the frequency label that best fits.
4. Move on and maintain attention to the next item's wording.

Rapid responding is not a license to select the same option repeatedly without reading. Nor does it mean choosing a lower rating to look modest when a higher frequency is accurate. The target is a truthful answer for each statement, not a deliberately varied answer pattern.

What the Honesty Warning Does and Does Not Mean

The official guide says some questions detect inaccurate self-descriptions and that responses may be verified by others. Deliberate falsification can lead to disqualification. These are reasons to answer accurately.

The guide does not disclose a statistical “perfection” cutoff or say that selecting a high frequency automatically invalidates an assessment. It also does not say that each answer is automatically copied into an SF-86 file or assigned to a polygraph question. Do not treat those claims as official exam mechanics. Read the current hiring instructions separately and answer all application materials truthfully.
