Why clean, safe drinking water matters, that water is treated as a food, the worker's personal responsibility, and that supplying water unfit for human consumption is a criminal offence under the Water Industry Act 1991.
Waterborne pathogens including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, E. coli and Legionella, the diseases linked to contaminated water (typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis A, gastroenteritis) and the public-health consequences of contamination.
How physical, chemical and microbiological contamination occurs, including backflow, back-siphonage and cross-connection, and the causes and consequences of contamination across water treatment, storage and the distribution network.
Personal hygiene and health (hand hygiene, reporting illness and exclusion periods), hygienic working methods near potable water, approved materials and fittings, clean tools and equipment, and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 responsibilities.
