The final leg of the driver's licensing journey in Abu Dhabi shifts from the classroom to the physical vehicle. This phase requires candidates to develop hands-on vehicle handling skills, master parking maneuvers, and demonstrate safe driving behavior in real-world traffic under the scrutiny of official examiners. This section details the progression of practical lessons, the internal yard test requirements, the final Abu Dhabi Police road test, and the subsequent license issuance process and fees.

Practical Training Progression

Upon passing the computer-based theory test, the candidate's electronic file is updated, authorizing them to begin hands-on behind-the-wheel training. This training must be conducted under the supervision of a licensed instructor in a dual-controlled vehicle. The curriculum is divided into clear stages:

1. Basic Handling (Yard/Track): Initial lessons take place on the academy's closed training tracks. Candidates learn vehicle controls, cabin setup, starting, stopping, steering mechanics, and low-speed maneuvers.
2. Parking Maneuvers: Candidates practice specific parking techniques in the yard, which are tested during the internal yard exam.
3. Public Road Driving: Once basic control and parking are mastered, training moves to public roads. Candidates learn to navigate intersections, crosswalks, roundabouts, and lane changes in urban environments.
4. Highway Driving: Advanced lessons introduce high-speed driving dynamics, merging onto highways, maintaining appropriate following gaps, and overtaking safely.

The Internal Yard Test

Before a candidate is permitted to take their final road test on public roads, they must pass the Internal Yard Test (also known as the parking test) administered by the driving academy. This exam tests five mandatory parking maneuvers on a closed yard layout equipped with sensors and cameras:

• Garage Parking: Perpendicular reversing (90-degree) into a bay.
• Angle Parking: Parking forward or reverse into a 60-degree angled bay.
• Parallel Parking: Maneuvering into a curbside parallel space.
• Hill Start: Stopping on an incline and moving forward without rolling back.
• Emergency Braking: Executing a sudden, controlled stop command at 30 km/h.

Hitting cones, mounting the curb, or rolling back more than 30 cm on the hill start results in immediate failure. If a candidate fails the yard test, they must complete remedial lessons before booking a retake.

The Abu Dhabi Police Road Test

The ultimate hurdle in the licensing process is the Abu Dhabi Police Road Test. This exam is administered directly by officers of the Abu Dhabi Police.

Test Environment and Procedure

On the day of the exam, candidates are grouped (usually three or four per test vehicle) and taken onto public roads. The police examiner sits in the front passenger seat, while the candidate drives a designated route. The examiner gives verbal directions, evaluating the driver's ability to apply traffic rules dynamically.

The examiner assesses candidates on:

• Lane Discipline: Maintaining the center of the lane and performing smooth lane changes with proper signaling, mirror checks, and shoulder checks (blind spot verification).
• Speed Management: Driving at an appropriate speed matching the road limit and traffic conditions, without exceeding the limit or driving too slowly.
• Junction Navigation: Approaching roundabouts and intersections with correct lane selection, yielding to vehicles with right-of-way, and exiting safely.
• Vehicle Control: Smooth acceleration, braking, and gear transitions.

Immediate Failure Conditions

Certain errors represent critical safety hazards and result in an immediate fail, regardless of overall performance:

• Running a red light or ignoring a stop sign.
• Failing to yield at a Give-Way sign, causing other vehicles to change speed or direction.
• Speeding or violating posted speed limits.
• Causing a near-collision or mounting a curb.
• If the examiner must intervene physically (e.g., using the dual-control brake) to prevent a hazard.

If a candidate fails, they must register for a mandatory block of practical training hours (usually 4 to 8 hours) before they are eligible to schedule another road test.

License Issuance, Fees, and Validity

If the examiner deems the candidate competent, they are issued a certificate of success. The candidate can then apply for the physical and digital driver's license via the TAMM portal or the Abu Dhabi Police mobile app.

Fee Structure

The licensing fees are set by federal decree and the UAE Ministry of Interior (MOI):

• MOI License Fee: A fee of AED 200 is charged for issuing a light-vehicle driving license.
• Administrative Fees: Additional processing fees (including eye test uploads) may add AED 100 to AED 200.

License Validity and Rules

The validity period of a newly issued driving license depends on the age and citizenship of the driver:

• Drivers Aged Under 21: Regardless of nationality, new licenses are valid for 2 years. This probationary period is designed to monitor young drivers; if they accumulate too many traffic black points, their license may be suspended, and they must undergo retraining.
• UAE Citizens (Aged 21 and Over): Upon renewal, the license is valid for 10 years.
• Expatriate Residents (Aged 21 and Over): The license is valid for 5 years and is linked to the holder's residency visa status.

Drivers must carry their physical license or maintain the digital version on the official government app while driving. Failing to produce a valid license upon request by a police officer is a traffic violation.
