Why matching silhouettes matters for X-ray
A 2-D X-ray is a silhouette-plus-density picture. Objects appear as outlines with brighter or darker fill depending on how much of the beam they stop. Threat items and benign items can share a family outline: a dense brick versus a battery pack; a toy replica versus a firearm profile; a round jar versus a liquid bottle. The officer's public task is not name every brand. It is does this outline, in this orientation, belong to the object I think it is, or am I matching a cousin?
Rotation is the daily version of the matching item. A firearm, a knife, or a laptop does not politely align with the belt. TSA CT's 360-degree rotation exists so a confusing silhouette can be turned until the outline is identifiable. Even on 2-D equipment, the bag itself may have been placed at an angle. Worked trail (practice, not an official item). Imagine eight numbered dots scattered on a page, with 3 sitting next to 7 and 4 sitting far from 5. The correct path is still 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 then 6 then 7 then 8. Connecting 3 to 7 because they are neighbors skips 4, 5, and 6. Recrossing the line from 5 back through 3 to reach 6 is a shortcut that treats the figure as a scribble. If the variant is 1-A-2-B, the next node after 1 is A, not 2.
