6.1 PSI National Practical Examination Structure & Timing

Tennessee administers the PSI National Nail Technician Practical Test for manicurist licensure. Candidates must pass the National Theory Test before scheduling the practical. Per PSI's Tennessee Nail Technician Test Taker Guide (Eff. 11/12/2021, Rev. 6/9/2022-TN), the practical has five timed topic areas totaling 105 minutes.

Understanding the published topic order matters more than memorizing generic "state board practical" checklists from other states. Tennessee's PSI script is specific: tip application and form enhancement are separate topics, manicure is its own 25-minute block, and end-of-day clean-up is scored on its own rather than being folded only into earlier cleanups.

Official Timed Topic Order (105 Minutes)

Evaluators score infection-control and workplace-safety adherence inside every topic area. Blood-exposure response is assessed as a safety/infection-control expectation during services, not as a separate sixth timed section on the Tennessee topic list.

When a proctor announces that time has ended for a topic area, stop immediately. Incomplete steps after the stop call do not earn points, and continuing to work can create safety or conduct issues.

What Each Topic Area Evaluates

Topic Area 1 — Workstation Preparation (10 min)

Prepare the daily workstation before services begin. Scoring focuses on workstation readiness plus workplace infection-control and safety precautions. Use this block to arrange labeled supplies, establish clean vs. soiled zones, and set trash handling so later manicure and enhancement topics start from a compliant station.

Topic Area 2 — Basic Manicure (25 min)

Set up and prepare the client for a basic manicure, perform the manicure, then clean up that station segment. Expect points for client prep, manicure performance, and infection-control/safety adherence throughout. The PSI script commonly splits this into about 10 minutes of prep, 10 minutes of manicure performance, and 5 minutes of section clean-up.

Topic Area 3 — Nail Tip Application (25 min)

Set up for tip application, prepare the client, apply a nail tip, and complete the tip-station cleanup while maintaining infection-control and safety standards. Treat tip sizing, adhesive control, and blending as precision tasks—forced tips, flooded adhesive, or contaminated files are common point losses.

Topic Area 4 — Nail Enhancement Using a Form (35 min)

Set up for a sculpted enhancement on a form, prepare the client, apply the enhancement, and clean that station segment. This is the longest topic (often 10 prep / 20 application / 5 cleanup). Build balanced structure on the form without sacrificing sanitation while handling monomer/polymer or other enhancement products allowed by the current Guide and Board product rules.

Topic Area 5 — End-of-Day Clean-Up (10 min)

Perform day-end workstation clean-up with infection-control and safety precautions. After timed sections end, PSI final instructions also require clearing personal items and wiping the workstation with disinfectant before proctor sign-off.

Scheduling, Fees, Languages, and Score Rules

• Order of testing: Pass National Theory first; then schedule National Practical.
• Eligibility window: Candidates have 3 years to pass both National tests for licensure eligibility; after both are passed, they have 6 months to apply for the license.
• PSI practical fee: $67 (same as theory-only fee; fees are non-refundable/non-transferable and valid one year from payment per the Guide).
• Passing score: At least 70%.
• Languages: PSI notes National Nail Tech Theory availability in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese in Tennessee; confirm current language options in your PSI account before scheduling.
• Kit responsibility: Candidates must supply all equipment and supplies needed for the practical. Electronics are prohibited in the testing facility. Speaking with or assisting other candidates is not permitted.

Infection-Control Habits Evaluators Watch Continuously

Across all five topic areas, treat infection control as scored behavior—not optional housekeeping:

1. Sanitize hands and maintain a clean work zone before touching tools or the client/manikin surface.
2. Keep clean implements separated from soiled items; replace anything that becomes contaminated.
3. Dispense products without contaminating bulk containers.
4. Bag and dispose of waste properly during and after each topic area.
5. If a blood-exposure situation occurs or is simulated, stop the service, protect yourself and the client with gloves/standard precautions, clean and bandage as required, disinfect contaminated surfaces, and only then resume when it is safe and permitted.

These habits mirror Tennessee sanitary expectations in Rule Chapter 0440-02 (handwashing before service, wet/dry disinfection standards, covered trash, and blood/body-fluid response) even though the practical is a national PSI form.

Tennessee Law Test (Conditional — Not the Standard First-Time Path)

The separate Tennessee Law Test (25 questions, 40 minutes, 70% pass) is required for reciprocity and for certain reactivation/reinstatement paths (retired license under age 65; license expired 3+ years). It is not an additional timed practical topic for standard first-time school candidates who take National Theory + National Practical only.

Law-test content is weighted roughly 20% sanitation/disinfection/safety and 80% licensing (requirements/duties, renewal, Board discipline, license display, salon owner/manager duties, address changes, and the clients'-rights sign). Study Chapters 1–2 of this guide for that conditional exam, but do not confuse it with the five practical topic timers above.
