Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the Tennessee Nail Technician exam?

The National Nail Technician Theory Test has 70 scored questions plus up to 10 unscored experimental questions (80 total), and you have 90 minutes to finish. It is closed book. Most first-time candidates also take a separate hands-on National Practical Test rather than the Tennessee Law Test.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 70 percent to pass the Theory Test, and 70 percent is also the passing score on the separate Tennessee Law Test (required only for retired-license reactivation, reinstatement after a 3+ year lapse, or out-of-state reciprocity applicants).

Is there a waiting period before I can retake a failed test?

PSI's official Tennessee candidate bulletin does not impose a mandatory waiting period before rescheduling a failed Theory, Law, or Practical test. You can re-register and pick the next available test slot, but you must pay the retake fee again ($67 for Theory or Practical, $35 for reinstatement) and you have 3 years from your first attempt to pass both the Theory and Practical tests.

Do I need to know Tennessee cosmetology law for the standard licensing exam?

The main National Theory Test is weighted toward safety/infection control (38%) and nail services (49%), with only a small 'regulatory agencies' slice on law. The full 25-question Tennessee Law Test (licensing, renewal, disciplinary rules) is a separate exam required only for retired-license reactivation, reinstatement after 3+ years, or license transfer from another state.

How many training hours do I need before I can test?

Tennessee requires 600 hours of instruction in the practice and theory of manicuring at a Board-licensed school of cosmetology before you are eligible to test with PSI.
