Why delivery rules belong in a 004 study plan
Terraform Associate (004) knowledge is useless if you forfeit the seat. HashiCorp delivers Associate exams as online-proctored appointments. You purchase and schedule through the HashiCorp certification platform (start at the certification sign-in page, then follow the redirect into the exam vendor). The certification portal is attached to a GitHub account. Use the same GitHub identity every time; a second GitHub login creates a second portal and can hide your appointment, results, or badge.
This is an Associate appointment, not a Professional lab. The seat is 1 hour. HashiCorp does not publish a break for Associate exams. The Professional exam is the one that lists a 4-hour duration with a 15-minute break included. Do not plan to stand up, take a phone call, or use a second monitor. HashiCorp's appointment rules require a private, quiet room, a clear desk, one monitor, a live webcam, and a physical, unexpired government-issued photo ID whose names exactly match the certification portal. Digital IDs are not allowed. Headphones are not allowed. Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead or you can lose the fee.

How you buy, schedule, and sit
Practical delivery sequence:

- Purchase the Terraform Associate (004) exam. Expect $70.50 USD plus locally applicable taxes and fees.
- Schedule the online-proctored sitting. HashiCorp currently delivers through Certiverse. HashiCorp says its exams do not use Certiverse Safe Exam Browser or Rosyln.
- Before exam day, pass the vendor network test and confirm the machine meets Certiverse hardware rules. HashiCorp recommends Google Chrome and warns that pop-up blockers can block screen sharing.
- Join from a private room. If you use an external monitor, close the laptop lid and use a webcam on that single monitor.

HashiCorp's own example is the one to memorize. If attempts fall on 1 July, 1 August, 1 September, and 1 October 2024, the fifth attempt is first allowed on 1 July 2025 — 365 days after the first attempt — not on 1 October 2025. The sixth attempt would then be 1 August 2025, and so on. The 7-day gap still applies inside a new window.

Professional exams use the same 7-day and 4-in-365 pattern, but the purchase is different. A Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional purchase is $295 USD plus taxes and fees and includes a free retake if you attempt the exam and do not pass. The free Professional voucher must be requested within 3 months of the failed attempt. Do not import that voucher into Associate planning. Associate has no such voucher.
Recertification: 2 years, three official scenarios
The Associate credential expires in 2 years. HashiCorp's certification page and the recertification knowledge-base article describe how you renew. Recertification eligibility begins 18 months after you earn the credential, which is the same point as 6 months before expiration. HashiCorp emails reminders at 6 months, 3 months, and 1 month if your portal email is current. A single certification account may hold only one valid credential per exam at a time.
Know which exam version you passed by the 3-digit code on the badge and certificate. Then pick the scenario that matches:
Scenario 1 — unexpired 004
- Pass Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional at any time before expiration. HashiCorp extends the Associate expiration and issues a new professional-level badge and certificate.
- Pass 004 again starting 6 months before expiration. HashiCorp extends the existing 004 credentials' expiration date.
Scenario 2 — unexpired 002 or 003
This is the trap for people who passed an older Associate exam and think 004 is a simple renewal of the same badge.
- Pass the Professional exam before expiration. HashiCorp extends the original Associate expiration and awards the professional credential.
- Pass 004 starting 6 months before expiration. You receive a new, separate set of credentials with a new expiration date. The original 002/003 expiration date is not updated.
That second option is why a 003 holder should not wait until the last week. Passing 004 creates a new 004 credential. The old badge still dies on its original date. Scenario 3 — any expired Associate credential
There is only one official option: pass the current Associate exam at any time. You receive a new, separate credential set with a new expiration date. The expired credentials' date is not rewritten.
Associate versus Professional at purchase time
Keep the two Terraform credentials separate when you click Buy:
