1.1 RNC-MNN Credential Overview, Eligibility & Exam Format

Quick Summary: The National Certification Corporation (NCC) RNC-MNN credential validates specialty knowledge used to care for the childbearing family from birth through six weeks. The 2026 candidate guide specifies 175 multiple-choice questions, 150 scored and 25 unscored, in three hours. Each item has three possible answers and one correct answer. Current delivery is through PSI at a testing center or by PSI live remote proctoring.

Credential purpose and practice scope

RNC-MNN is a national specialty nursing certification. Its scope includes maternal and newborn assessment, management, education, risk recognition, stabilization, and coordination across hospital, outpatient, and community settings. It is not limited to bedside couplet care: qualifying specialty work may include direct patient care, education, administration, or research.

The test assumes that the candidate can distinguish expected postpartum and newborn adaptation from findings that require escalation. It samples normal care as well as maternal hemorrhagic, infectious, cardiopulmonary, hypertensive, endocrine, psychiatric, and substance-related complications and newborn cardiorespiratory, neurologic, gastrointestinal, hematologic, infectious, genetic, metabolic, and endocrine complications.

Eligibility checklist

All official eligibility elements must be met at application:

1. Hold a current, active, unencumbered RN license in the United States or Canada.
2. Have at least 24 months of maternal-newborn specialty experience as a licensed RN.
3. Have at least 2,000 hours in the specialty. Direct care, education, administration, and research may qualify.
4. Have been employed in the specialty at some point during the 24 months immediately before application.

Both the 24-month duration and 2,000-hour threshold apply. A degree beyond RN licensure is not listed as a prerequisite. Candidates should preserve accurate employment and license records because NCC may request verification; the candidate guide does not publish a fixed audit percentage.

Application and testing logistics

The examination fee is $325, including a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Because testing procedures can change, the candidate should follow the current authorization notice and PSI instructions rather than an older third-party checklist.

At a test center, candidates must meet the identification, arrival, and security rules in the current confirmation. A remote candidate must complete PSI's current equipment and workspace checks. Never assume that a previous vendor's software, check-in rules, or remote-proctoring application still applies.

Scoring and result reporting

NCC describes the exam as criterion-referenced: performance is judged against a defined competence standard, not against the other candidates testing that day. NCC uses item-response theory and the Rasch model to account for form difficulty. It does not publish a universal number or percentage correct, and the score report does not provide a percentage or scaled score.

There is no immediate result at the testing site. NCC states that the official Pass/Fail result is placed in the candidate's NCC account within 15 business days after the examination; the score report follows approximately 24 hours later. When a newly developed form requires additional analysis, processing can take up to 21 business days. Treat every item as scored because pretest items are not identified.

The two maternal domains total 51% and the two newborn domains total 42%. That distribution supports spending most preparation time on postpartum assessment/management and on differentiating complications, while still reviewing antenatal and intrapartum factors that change post-birth care.

Maintenance after certification

Certification is maintained on a three-year cycle. NCC's Continuing Competency Assessment (CCA) generates an individualized education plan, generally requiring 10 to 50 continuing-education hours. The certificant completes the assigned education and maintenance application while continuing to meet licensure requirements. Always use the current NCC maintenance instructions for timing, category codes, and documentation.

Practical exam approach

Three hours for 175 items averages about 62 seconds per item. Use that number as a pacing check, not a command to rush. Identify who is unstable, decide whether the stem asks for assessment or action, and choose the option that best protects airway, breathing, circulation, neurologic function, or immediate safety. Answer every item, then use remaining time to review flagged questions. Change an answer when a specific clinical fact or calculation shows that the first choice was wrong; there is no evidence-based rule that a first answer is inherently more reliable.
