A group contingency is an arrangement in which a common consequence is made available to a group of individuals based on the behavior of one member, some members, or all members. Group contingencies are efficient - a single supervisor can manage one contingency for 24 students instead of 24 individual plans - and they recruit peer-mediated reinforcement, which is often more powerful than anything an adult can deliver. They are also the reduction procedure most likely to produce a serious social side effect if designed carelessly.

Independent Group Contingency

Dependent Group Contingency
Sometimes called the hero procedure. The entire group's reinforcement depends on the performance of one individual or a small subset.

- Strengths: Can convert a peer-rejected student into a source of group benefit and dramatically increase peer attention and encouragement toward that student.

- Set a criterion the student can already meet. Start below current performance so early sessions are near-certain successes.
- Obtain informed consent from the student and family, and assent from the student, before making them the group's contingency.

- Unearned reinforcement. Under interdependent and dependent arrangements, members who did nothing still access the reinforcer. This is usually acceptable but becomes a problem if it maintains passivity; pair the contingency with individual accountability if so.
- Sabotage. A member who values the alternative more than the reinforcer intentionally blocks the group. Randomization is the first-line fix; an individualized contingency for that member is the second.
- Undue social pressure. Peer coercion, blaming, or harassment. This is an ethical stop condition, not a tolerable side effect. A QASP-S who observes it must halt the contingency and redesign, and should document the decision in the supervision record.
