What the PTCB Supply Chain Certificate Is

The PTCB Supply Chain and Inventory Management Certificate is an Assessment-Based Certificate (ABC) administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). It validates working knowledge of how medications move through the pharmacy supply chain — from manufacturer to wholesaler to dispensing pharmacy — and how that inventory is managed, documented, and kept compliant with federal law.

A framing point that trips up many candidates: this is a certificate, not a certification. You do not earn a post-nominal acronym (nothing goes after your name), and the credential does not expire. What it does do is count toward PTCB's Advanced CPhT (CPhT-Adv) credential, which requires four of PTCB's certificate programs — or three certificate programs plus the Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) certification — plus 3 years of work experience.

At-a-Glance Logistics

A few of these numbers are worth committing to memory because they show up as direct-recall items. The 75 questions, the 300 passing scaled score, and the $89 fee are the three most commonly tested logistics facts. The 1 hour 20 minutes is the scored exam window; the full Pearson VUE appointment runs about 1 hour 30 minutes because of a 5-minute pre-exam tutorial and a 5-minute post-exam survey, neither of which counts against your 80 minutes of scored time.

Scaled Scoring, Explained

PTCB reports results on a scaled score ranging from 0 to 400, with 300 required to pass. Scaled scoring converts your raw number of correct answers to a common scale so that different exam forms of slightly varying difficulty can be compared fairly. A harder form may require fewer raw correct answers to reach 300 than an easier form.

Practical implication: you cannot compute a fixed "number correct to pass" in advance, because that figure is not published and would shift with the form you receive. Do not let anyone tell you "you need 53 out of 75" — that number is not official. What you can control is mastery of the published content outline, which is the same for every form.

There is no penalty for guessing. Scaled scoring with no negative marking means a blank answer and a wrong answer produce the same result, so you should answer every item. If time is about to expire, fill in a response on every unanswered question before the clock hits zero — a guess has positive expected value, a blank does not.

The Three Domains and Their Weights

The exam is built from three content domains. Knowing the weights tells you where to spend your study hours.

The two largest domains — Laws and Inventory — together account for 72% of the exam. That ratio should drive your time allocation: roughly three-quarters of your study hours belong to those two domains, with Suppliers getting the remaining quarter.

Delivery Options: Test Center vs. Online Proctoring

PTCB partners with Pearson VUE to deliver the exam. You choose between:

1. Pearson VUE test center — a physical Pearson VUE-owned or -authorized site. Best if you want a controlled, quiet environment and do not want to worry about your home setup meeting technical requirements.
2. Online proctoring (Pearson VUE OnVUE) — take the exam from your home or office while a proctor monitors you via webcam. You need a private, quiet room, a reliable wired internet connection, a working webcam, and a government-issued photo ID. Phones, second monitors, notes, and other people in the room are prohibited.

Both delivery methods deliver the same 75-question exam and the same scaled scoring. The content is identical — only the experience differs. If you choose online proctoring, run Pearson VUE's system test a day or two before your appointment so you can fix any environment issues in advance.

The ABC vs. Certification Distinction

A PTCB certification (like the CPhT itself) is a time-limited credential that requires renewal and continuing education and confers a post-nominal acronym. An Assessment-Based Certificate (ABC) is different on every one of those axes:

The Supply Chain ABC does not expire and does not need renewal. Once earned, it stays on your PTCB record permanently and contributes toward the certificate-program requirement for CPhT-Adv (four certificates, or three plus CSPT, together with 3 years of work experience). Your underlying CPhT still has its own renewal and CE cycle, which you must keep current independently.
