Eligibility & the CPhT-Adv Pathway

The Two Eligibility Gates

Eligibility for the PTCB Supply Chain and Inventory Management Certificate rests on two requirements that must both be satisfied before you can register for the exam.

Gate 1 — Active PTCB CPhT. You must currently hold the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential issued by PTCB. "Active" means your CPhT is not expired, suspended, or revoked. If your CPhT lapses, you must reinstate it before you can sit for this ABC. The CPhT is the foundational certification; the Supply Chain ABC is a specialty built on top of it.

Gate 2 — PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program. You must complete a PTCB-Recognized Supply Chain and Inventory Management Education/Training Program. This is non-negotiable: you cannot substitute on-the-job experience, employer in-service training, or self-study for this requirement. PTCB maintains a list of Recognized programs on its website; only programs on that list satisfy the gate.

A common misconception is that years of pharmacy supply-chain work can waive the education requirement. They cannot. Even a technician with a decade of wholesaler coordination, 340B split-billing, or controlled-substance receiving experience must complete a Recognized program before sitting for the exam. PTCB's logic is that the exam is designed to test content delivered in Recognized programs, so program completion is a prerequisite for a valid exam result — not a formality.

Why Both Gates?

The two-gate structure protects the integrity of the credential. The CPhT gate confirms baseline pharmacy-technician knowledge (the foundation); the Recognized-program gate confirms focused instruction in supply-chain and inventory content (the specialty). Skip either gate and the exam result is not valid, which is why PTCB reviews eligibility before authorizing you to schedule with Pearson VUE.

How to Register and Schedule

Once both gates are met, the path to exam day is:

1. Verify CPhT status — log in to your PTCB account and confirm your CPhT is active.
2. Complete a Recognized program — finish the coursework and obtain the program completion record PTCB requires.
3. Apply through PTCB — submit the Supply Chain ABC application in your PTCB account. PTCB reviews eligibility (CPhT active + Recognized program completion).
4. Pay the $89 fee — paid through your PTCB account once eligibility is approved.
5. Receive authorization — PTCB sends an authorization email with instructions to schedule with Pearson VUE.
6. Schedule with Pearson VUE — choose a test center or an online-proctored (OnVUE) session. Popular test-center slots fill weeks ahead, so book early.
7. Take the exam — 75 questions, 1 hour 20 minutes, at your scheduled time.

If you need to reschedule, Pearson VUE allows changes up to a cutoff (typically 24-48 hours before the appointment) without forfeiting the fee. Missing the cutoff or no-showing generally means you forfeit the fee and must repay to retest, so set a calendar reminder for both the appointment and the reschedule deadline.

The ABC vs. Certification Distinction in Depth

The distinction matters because candidates frequently misstate what they have earned. If you pass this exam, you do not say you are "certified in supply chain" — you hold a certificate (an Assessment-Based Certificate). That phrasing distinction is tested and is also a professional-accuracy issue.

Because the ABC does not expire, there is no continuing-education requirement specific to it. Your underlying CPhT still has its own CE and renewal cycle — keep that current independently, because the ABC is only useful while the CPhT that made you eligible remains active.

Stacking Toward CPhT-Adv

The real career value of this ABC is that it counts toward PTCB's Advanced CPhT (CPhT-Adv) credential. CPhT-Adv recognizes technicians who have built depth across multiple practice areas. PTCB states the requirement in three parts, and candidates routinely remember only the first:

1. An active PTCB CPhT certification, and
2. Four of PTCB's certificate programs — or three certificate programs plus the Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) certification, and
3. 3 years of work experience.

You pick any four (or any three plus CSPT). This Supply Chain certificate is one of the eleven options and is frequently chosen by technicians whose day-to-day work involves purchasing, wholesaler coordination, 340B inventory, or controlled-substance receiving — making it both exam-relevant and career-relevant.

Strategic note: there is no required combination. You could combine Supply Chain + Hazardous Drug Management + Regulatory Compliance + TPV, or any other set of four. Choose certificates that match your actual practice setting so the knowledge compounds on the job.

Keeping the Underlying CPhT Active

A subtle but critical point: because the CPhT is the eligibility gate, your ABC is only presented as a current credential while your CPhT is active. If your CPhT expires, you must reinstate it before you can again claim the ABC as part of an active credential stack. Keep your CPhT renewal and CE current — it is the foundation everything else sits on.
