Each Math module is 35 minutes with 22 questions on screen. College Board’s 2026–27 Student Guide specifies 20 operational questions and 2 pretest questions per module. Pretest items do not count toward the score, but they look like real items, so your pacing plan is 22 questions, not 20. Two modules make 70 minutes and 44 questions for Math as a whole. Average time is about 1.59 minutes per question, but that average is a description, not a stopwatch you must hit on every item.
Questions in a Math module are arranged from easiest to hardest. That order is your friend if you use it. The early items are where many students should bank time. The late items are where many students should flag, skip, and return instead of burning eight minutes on question 21 while question 22 sits unanswered.
You cannot return to a module after its timer hits zero. You cannot jump back to Reading and Writing after Math starts. Flagging works inside the current module only. Bluebook’s Mark for Review and the question menu are the tools; details of those tools are in 2.3.

An OpenExamPrep pacing sketch (not a College Board minute mandate)
College Board does not publish a required split of the 35 minutes. The following is OpenExamPrep advice for a typical 8th or 9th grader, not an official timing requirement:

If you are still on question 6 after 20 minutes, you are behind that sketch. Mark the current item, jump to the next unanswered question from the menu, and stop trying to finish a long solution in one sitting.
SPR items are mixed through the same easiest-to-hardest line. Do not assume a typed box is automatically “the hard one.” An early SPR may be a one-step integer. A late multiple-choice item may be the one that needs a careful unit conversion. Treat each stem on its merits, then use the SPR entry rules when the box appears.
When not to use a calculator
A calculator is permitted on every Math question. Embedded Desmos (scientific and graphing, toggled at any time) is in Bluebook. An approved non-CAS handheld is optional. None of that means you should punch every line.
College Board’s calculator policy is blunt: the Math section includes some questions where it is better not to use a calculator, even though you are allowed to. It also says it may help to do scratch work first and get your thoughts down before using your calculator.
Do not reach for Desmos or a handheld when:
- The item is a one-step or two-step linear equation you can isolate faster by hand, such as 2x + 3 = 17.
- You would only be checking 7 × 8 or 12 − 5.
- Graphing a line would take longer than reading two points and computing slope.
- You have not yet written what the question is asking, so the calculator would be computing the wrong quantity cleanly.
- A 4-function calculator would hide order of operations. Four-function devices are allowed but not recommended because many of them compute 2 + 3 × 4 as 20 instead of 14. That is a reason to skip a weak handheld, not a reason to skip thinking.
Use a calculator when the arithmetic is messy—multi-digit decimals, a long substitution, a graph that actually answers the stem—after the setup exists on paper.
Scratch paper is for setup, not doodling
Staff provide scratch paper. Write your full name as directed. Do not tear the sheet. Do not bring your own paper. On Math, the paper’s job is:
- Copy the equation or label the figure.
- Define variables and units (miles, hours, dollars, percent).
- Solve in a column you can check.
- Only then type a multiple-choice choice or an SPR value.
Students who “do it in Desmos” with no paper often cannot find a sign error. Students who write a full essay on scratch paper waste the 35 minutes. Aim for a short, labeled setup.
Desmos versus a handheld
Desmos in Bluebook is always there, even if a handheld dies. Toggle scientific for arithmetic, exponents, and parentheses. Toggle graphing when a picture of a line, intercept, or intersection is actually the fastest check. Practice those modes in Bluebook’s test preview or on the public Desmos scientific and graphing sites College Board links from the calculator policy. A graphing window is not a CAS: it will not legally factor a polynomial for you on this test, and CAS handhelds are prohibited anyway. The full prohibited-feature list lives in 3.1. What this section adds is judgment: graph to check, not to avoid algebra you are being tested on.
A familiar non-CAS handheld can feel faster if you already live on that keypad. Keep the cover under the desk. The handheld stays under the desk during Reading and Writing. You may not share a calculator. If the handheld fails, continue with Desmos—staff may not have a spare. Do not unpack a brand-new calculator the night before the test.
The Math reference sheet (area, volume, Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, circle formulas) is a separate Bluebook tool. PSAT 8/9 does not assess trigonometry or circle skill/knowledge testing points; do not study sine, cosine, or circle theorems as this test’s content. Area, volume, and right triangles are in scope. Check units and reasonableness, then answer every question
About 30% of Math questions are in-context word problems. Units are where those items go wrong. If a runner travels 5 miles in 2 hours, a speed of 2.5 miles per hour is plausible; a speed of 10 hours per mile is a reciprocal error. If a class of 28 students has a “mean height of 9 inches,” the mean is not reasonable for 8th graders. If an SPR comes out to 4,000,000 in a problem about a 12-pack of juice, you likely dropped a decimal.
Checking sequence:
- Did I find the quantity the stem asked for (x, y-intercept, percent, difference)?
- Do the units match?
- Is the size of the number reasonable?
- Can I substitute back into the original equation?
- If it is SPR, does the typed string follow the character and format rules in 15.1?
Answer every question. Digital PSAT 8/9 scoring does not describe the old quarter-point wrong-answer subtraction. College Board tells most students it is better to guess than to leave a question blank, especially after eliminating options. A blank SPR is still a blank. Enter your best complete value. Random clicking through Module 1 is not the same as end-of-module guessing; Module 1 accuracy still routes you to a harder or easier Module 2. See 1.3 and 2.1.
When about five minutes remain, Bluebook alerts you and the clock can no longer be hidden. Stop starting brand-new long solutions. Open the question menu, jump to flagged items, then fill remaining multiple-choice items and SPR boxes. When the timer hits zero, the module locks.
