Module timing is the part of the PSAT 8/9 that surprises students who practiced as if the exam were one long scroll. Bluebook does not give you 134 minutes to wander the whole test. It gives you four separately timed modules, two per section, and it locks a module when that module's clock expires. If you still think in paper-test terms—“I'll skip the hard passage and come back in the last ten minutes of the whole section”—you will discover that those last ten minutes belong to a different module you cannot reopen.
This section is the official clock, the official item counts, and the reason two questions in every module will never help your score even if you answer them perfectly.
The official timing table
College Board's PSAT 8/9 structure page and the 2026–27 Student Guide agree on the section totals: Reading and Writing 64 minutes / 54 questions, Math 70 minutes / 44 questions, overall 134 minutes / 98 questions (about 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing). Those operational counts are what IRT scoring can use. The pretest counts are embedded so College Board can try future questions. You will not be told which two items in a module are pretest. They are written to look like operational items and are placed among items testing the same skill, so hunting for “the fake ones” is a losing strategy. Answer every question as if it counts; pretest work simply will not change the number Bluebook reports.
Average pace, if you spread time evenly, is about 1.19 minutes per Reading and Writing question and about 1.59 minutes per Math question (Student Guide). That is a planning average, not a stopwatch rule. Because of grouping, some early questions in a Reading and Writing skill cluster should go faster than the last question in that cluster.
What you see in each module
All four content domains appear in each module. For Reading and Writing those domains are Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. For Math they are Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry. You cannot “save geometry for later in the section” in the paper-test sense. Geometry can appear in Math Module 1. A Conventions question can appear in Reading and Writing Module 1. Routing decisions described in 1.3 Adaptive Routing and Module 1 Accuracy therefore rest on a mix of domains, not on a single topic.
Reading and Writing order. Questions that test similar skills are grouped, then arranged easiest to hardest within that grouping. The Assessment Framework is more specific: within each domain except Standard English Conventions, items are ordered first by skill/knowledge element and then by difficulty; Conventions items are ordered easiest to hardest regardless of which convention is being tested. The practical student move is: when you enter a new cluster, the first items are the ones you should bank quickly. Do not spend three minutes on the first Words in Context item just because you are nervous. Save extra time for the harder items at the end of a cluster. You may still jump around inside the module—flag, skip, return—until the 32 minutes end.
Math order. Across each Math module, questions run easiest to hardest. Late-module items are, on average, the ones that eat time. If you linger on question 3 of 22, you are burning reserve you may want for the last third. Math also mixes four-choice items with student-produced response items; those typed answers are part of the same easiest-to-hardest flow, not a separate section you can postpone until after multiple choice.
A small number of students approved for certain accommodations (for example a human reader, raised-line drawings, or paper forms) take a nonadaptive form with a slightly higher question count per module. If that is you, your SSD coordinator and Bluebook practice will show the linear form. Most testers see the adaptive counts in the table above.
The lock, the break, and a classroom scenario
Each module is separately timed. When Module 1 hits zero, Bluebook advances you to Module 2 for that section. You cannot return to a finished module. You also cannot return to Reading and Writing after Math starts. There is no break between Module 1 and Module 2 of the same section. College Board does place a short break between the two sections—Reading and Writing first, then Math. Under standard timing, College Board's accommodations handbook describes that as a 10-minute break; the Student Guide and Bluebook student page simply call it a short break. Use it to stand, drink water, and reset. Do not use it to reopen questions. The modules are already closed.
Bluebook's timer counts down inside the module. You can hide it until five minutes remain, at which point it stays visible. Plan a check when you are about halfway through a module: in Reading and Writing, you want to be near the middle of the 27 on-screen items, not still on question 8.
Consider Maya in Reading and Writing Module 1. She meets a dense science graphic on question 6, spends four minutes, and tells herself she will “come back after Math.” Math is a different section. Even “after this module” is unavailable once the 32 minutes expire. The recovery is inside the module: flag the graphic, answer the rest of the cluster, return if time remains.
Consider Andre in Math Module 1. The first ten items feel friendly because the module is easiest-to-hardest. He slows down anyway, writing every arithmetic step twice. Questions 18–22 then arrive as the harder mix, including a typed response, with three minutes left. The trap was not the hard items; it was treating early items as if the whole 35 minutes belonged to them.
Stay in the room for all four modules. The Student Guide requires completing all sections; leaving before dismissal can make the test incomplete or subject to cancellation.
