1.1 Praxis 5652 Test Facts, Scoring, and Registration

Who the test is for

ETS describes Praxis Computer Science (5652) as a test of the computer science knowledge a beginning secondary school computer science teacher needs. ETS adds that test takers have typically completed a bachelor's program with an emphasis in computer science or computer science education. You will be asked to work with computing concepts, apply algorithms and computational thinking, read and reason about code, manipulate data, and explain how computing systems and networks work.

ETS states that the test is not built around any single curriculum. Instead, it is intended to be consistent with national recommendations such as the K–12 Computer Science Framework (2016), the CSTA K–12 Computer Science Standards (2017), and the ISTE Computational Thinking Competencies. In practice this means questions are language-neutral: code appears in the ETS pseudocode described in Section 1.2, not in Python or Java.

Test at a glance

Some questions do not count toward your score. ETS uses unscored pretest questions, and the approximate category question counts include both scored and unscored items, so the exact number per category can vary slightly from one form to another. ETS does not publish how many pretest questions a form contains, and you cannot tell them apart, so treat every question as scored.

The five content categories

Programming and Algorithms together account for about 55 of the 100 questions, and most of those questions ask you to trace, complete, or compare code. That is why this guide includes so many worked traces.

Question formats you should expect

The ETS sample questions for 5652 use two response styles:

1. Single-answer multiple choice: four choices, (A) through (D), one correct.
2. Select all that apply: the stem tells you to select all correct choices. In the ETS sample set, one item has three options and all three are correct, so do not assume that at least one option must be wrong.

Many stems include pseudocode, tables of values (for example, dice rolls and resulting scores), class-method tables, or scenario descriptions. The Study Companion does not describe partial credit for select-all items. When you practice, treat them as all-or-nothing: judge each option independently, then check that you selected every option you judged true.

How scoring works

ETS explains that on most Praxis tests each selected-response question answered correctly is worth one raw point, and your raw score is the number of questions you answer correctly. ETS then converts raw scores to scaled scores so that a given score means about the same level of knowledge on every edition (form) of the test.

Two practical consequences follow:

• There is no deduction for a wrong answer. A blank earns nothing, so answer every question, even with an educated guess.
• You cannot convert a raw percentage into a scaled score yourself. The conversion depends on the difficulty of your form.

What typical scores look like

ETS's Understanding Your Praxis Scores 2025–2026 lists these statistics for 5652, calculated from test takers who tested between August 2022 and July 2025:

The median is a description of past test takers, not a passing score. Your requirement is the qualifying score set by your state or licensing agency. Look it up with ETS's state requirements tool for your state, and confirm that your state accepts test 5652 at all.

Registration, results, and retakes

• Register through your ETS Praxis account. Choose a test center appointment or an at-home appointment if one is offered to you.
• Score recipients: ETS lets you choose up to four institutions or agencies at no extra cost when you register.
• Unofficial scores: ETS says Praxis tests that contain only selected-response questions offer an unofficial score at the end of the session. If no unofficial score appears, ETS says further analysis is needed. This is not a sign of a problem.
• Official scores post to your ETS account on the score-reporting date shown in ETS's calendar tool. ETS reports scores on Tuesdays and Fridays.
• Retakes: ETS requires you to wait at least 28 days after your last attempt before testing again on the same test. This applies even if you canceled your scores.
• Free After 3: ETS offers a free retake after three reported attempts at the same test if all three attempts began on or after October 1, 2025. The free retake must fall within five years of the date the third score was reported.

A realistic study sequence

1. Learn the ETS pseudocode notation first (Section 1.2), because code-reading questions appear across Categories II and III.
2. Work through Programming (Chapters 7–12) and Algorithms (Chapters 4–6). Together they are about 55% of the test.
3. Cover Data (Chapters 13–14) and Systems and Networks (Chapters 15–16). These questions are largely vocabulary and reasoning, so they reward steady review.
4. Finish with Impacts of Computing (Chapters 2–3), then take timed mixed sets. At about 108 seconds per question, a slow trace on one item has to be paid back with quick answers elsewhere.
