1.2 Eligibility, Online Delivery, Required Texts & Recertification
Key Takeaways
- NALS designs the PP for graduates of an ABA-approved legal studies or paralegal studies program or for candidates with at least five years of paralegal or legal assistant experience; NALS membership is never required.
- The PP is delivered online through the Prolydian platform with Rosalyn AI proctoring, on a desktop or laptop only, inside a 30-day scheduling window — it is not administered at a physical testing center.
- NALS names the Gregg Reference Manual (11th edition) as the only accepted authority for filing questions and The Bluebook as the only accepted authority for citation-style questions.
- Ethics questions must be answered as a lawyer's assistant working in any state, not under the candidate's own state rules or firm practices.
- The PP certificate runs five years and is renewed with at least 75 CLE hours, including a minimum of 50 hours in substantive legal topics and 5 hours in ethics.
1.2 Eligibility, Online Delivery, Required Texts & Recertification
[!NOTE] Why the mechanics matter for scoring: Two of the four PP parts are graded against named reference works rather than against general professional practice. If you answer a filing question the way your firm files, or a citation question the way your jurisdiction's style guide prefers, you will be marked wrong even when your answer is defensible. Knowing which authority controls each question type is worth real points.
Eligibility Pathways
NALS positions the PP for two candidate profiles:
- Students graduating from an ABA-approved legal studies or paralegal studies program, and
- Individuals with a minimum of five years of paralegal or legal assistant experience.
Eligibility is the candidate's responsibility to verify before applying; NALS reviews applications once monthly after the deadline, and applicants who are not approved may correct the application or switch to an exam for which they qualify. Ineligible applicants are subject to the refund policy rather than automatic approval.
Two further points are commonly misunderstood:
- Membership in NALS is not a requirement for any of the examinations. Membership affects pricing, not access.
- Individuals currently serving a prison term are ineligible to sit for any NALS certification examination, and a certification may be revoked for a felony conviction, a determination of unauthorized practice of law, divulging examination contents, falsifying an application, or violating the NALS Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility.
How the Examination Is Delivered
The PP is a computer-based, AI-proctored online assessment. There is no physical testing center, and no Prometric or PSI seat to reserve. The delivery stack has two named vendors:
| Component | Vendor | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Exam portal | Prolydian | Hosts the candidate profile, exam scheduling, launch, flagging, and submission |
| Remote proctoring | Rosalyn.ai | Records screen, audio, and webcam; flags anomalies for Certifying Board review |
The operational constraints follow from that architecture:
- Desktop or laptop only. Tablets, Chromebooks, and phones do not meet the proctoring requirements.
- A working camera and microphone are mandatory, and dual monitors are not supported.
- Laptops must stay connected to power for the full session.
- A government-issued photo ID is required, and the name on it must match the name on the Prolydian profile.
- A digital notepad is available inside the platform. A physical notepad is prohibited without prior NALS approval.
- The exam auto-submits at the time limit if the candidate has not submitted.
Scheduling runs on a monthly cadence. A candidate registers by the first of the preceding month, receives Prolydian access instructions, and then schedules an appointment inside a 30-day window. Appointments must be made more than twenty-four hours in advance; day-of appointments may carry a premium scheduling fee. Rescheduling is unlimited but must happen at least four hours before the appointment. Candidates who cannot finish inside the eligibility window may purchase a thirty-day extension for a fee.
The Controlling Reference Authorities
NALS lists required texts for the PP, and two of them are designated as exclusive authorities for specific question types. This is unusual and it is examinable.
| Text | Edition NALS lists | Role on the PP |
|---|---|---|
| NALS Advanced Manual for the Legal Professional | 15th | Primary content manual across the parts |
| Gregg Reference Manual | 11th | The only accepted authority for filing questions (Part 2) |
| Rotunda, Black Letter Outline on Professional Responsibility | 9th | Ethics doctrine for Part 3 |
| The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation | Listed as 21st in the required-text list; the Part 4 outline note still names the 20th | The only accepted authority for citation-style questions (Part 4) |
| Paralegal Today: The Legal Team at Work | 8th | Practice-context reference |
| ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct | Current | Governing ethics rules for Part 3 |
[!WARNING] The Bluebook edition is genuinely ambiguous in the NALS materials. The required-textbook page lists the 21st edition while the Part 4 content-outline note still names the 20th edition as the accepted citation authority. The practical mitigation is to study the citation forms that did not change between those editions — case, statute, constitution, court rule, book, and periodical formats plus short forms and signals — rather than edition-specific novelties.
For Part 3, NALS points candidates to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the ABA Model Code of Professional Responsibility, including the comments to each.
The Framing Instruction for Ethics Items
NALS gives candidates one explicit interpretive instruction, and it disposes of a large share of otherwise-ambiguous ethics questions:
Remember, you are being tested as though you work for a lawyer in any state, rather than your state or your law firm. You are a lawyer's assistant, not a lawyer.
That instruction has two operational consequences. First, discard state-specific variations. If your jurisdiction permits limited-license practitioners to appear at uncontested hearings, that does not make the conduct correct on the PP. Second, discard your firm's habits. If the partners in your office routinely let paralegals sign engagement letters, the model answer is still that the lawyer establishes the attorney-client relationship and sets the fee.
Confidentiality of Exam Content
Examination questions must remain confidential. Candidates may not discuss questions or answers with anyone, including other examinees or people who have already passed. The platform provides a comment field for flagging a specific item to NALS. Breaching confidentiality can cost the designation and bar the individual from future examinations. A candidate found in violation of a proctoring rule has the entire attempt voided, forfeits all fees, and must wait at least six months before sitting another NALS examination.
Recertification
The PP certificate is valid for five years. Recertification requires the accumulation of:
- a minimum of 75 hours of continuing legal education hours and activities, of which
- a minimum of 50 hours must be in substantive legal topics, and
- a minimum of 5 hours must be in ethics.
Note the difference from the CLP, whose recertification requires 75 hours with a 5-hour ethics minimum but no separate substantive-hours floor. The PP's 50-hour substantive requirement reflects the credential's positioning as a substantive-law designation rather than an office-skills one.
The hiatus on new individual exam registration does not touch recertification. Existing holders continue to recertify on their normal five-year cycle.
A candidate encounters a Part 2 question asking how to index the name "MacGregor-Ortiz Consulting, LLC" for the firm's alphabetic file. The candidate's own firm uses a proprietary numeric filing system that would produce a different answer. Which authority governs the correct response?
A PP candidate is preparing for exam day. Which of the following arrangements satisfies the published NALS delivery requirements?
A PP holder is approaching the end of the five-year certification cycle and has accumulated 78 continuing legal education hours: 60 hours in law office technology and practice management, 12 hours in contract drafting, and 6 hours in legal ethics. Does this satisfy PP recertification?
