Exam Format at a Glance

Forty-five minutes for up to 60 questions is tight — that's roughly 45 seconds per question if the exam runs at the high end of the range. Practical implication: don't get stuck re-reading a single scenario. Answer, flag if genuinely unsure, and move on; you can typically return to flagged items before submitting.

Question Types You'll See

• Multiple choice (single answer) — the most common format; pick the one best answer from four options.
• Multiple response (select all that apply) — the question tells you how many answers to choose; partial credit is generally not awarded, so all selections in a set must be correct.
• Drag-and-drop / build list — match terms to definitions or place items in a defined order (for example, matching Power Platform components to their correct descriptions).
• Case study — a short business scenario followed by several related questions. These appear later in the exam and often can't be revisited once you move past that case's question block, so read the scenario carefully the first time.

Scoring Explained

PL-900 uses a scaled score from 100 to 1000, and you need 700 to pass. This is not the same as "70% correct." Microsoft weights questions psychometrically — some carry more scoring weight than others based on difficulty and how well they discriminate between candidates who know the material and those who don't. Unscored pilot questions may also be mixed in to gather data for future exams, though you won't be told which ones they are. The practical takeaway: don't try to reverse-engineer your score by counting how many questions "felt hard." Focus on answering every question as accurately as you can and trust the scaled result.

Your score report (available immediately at the test center, or shortly after for online-proctored sessions) breaks performance down by skills-measured domain, showing whether you scored stronger or weaker in areas like environment management versus Power Automate. Even on a passing result, review that domain breakdown — it's a useful signal for which Power Platform capability areas might deserve a refresher before you rely on this credential in a work context, since PL-900 is meant to reflect working knowledge, not just a passing grade.

Retake Policy

If you don't pass on your first attempt, Microsoft's retake policy is:

1. First fail → second attempt: wait 24 hours before retaking.
2. Second fail → third attempt: wait 14 days.
3. Third fail and beyond: each additional retake also requires a 14-day wait.

You must pay the exam fee again for each attempt — there's no free retake for Fundamentals-level exams. If you pass, you can't simply retake the same exam again just to try for a higher score; Microsoft doesn't currently require Fundamentals-level recertification, so there's no scheduled reason to sit PL-900 twice once you've passed.

Certification Validity — No Expiration

Unlike Microsoft's Associate and Expert level certifications (which generally require annual, free online renewal assessments), the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals badge earned by passing PL-900 does not expire. Once you pass, that credential stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript indefinitely. This makes PL-900 a low-risk way to validate foundational knowledge — there's no recurring renewal cost or renewal exam to schedule down the road, unlike higher-level Power Platform role certifications.

Registration and Preparation Tips

Register through Microsoft Learn (which routes to Pearson VUE) or, for eligible students, through Certiport at discounted academic pricing. Before scheduling, work through the official Microsoft Learn training paths for PL-900, and check whether you qualify for a free exam voucher through a Microsoft Cloud Skills Challenge — Microsoft periodically runs these promotions tied to specific certifications. Build in time to explore a Power Platform trial or developer environment hands-on; even though PL-900 doesn't test configuration steps in depth, seeing the actual Power Apps maker portal, a Power Automate flow, and the Copilot Studio authoring canvas will make the terminology in exam questions feel far more familiar.

What to Expect on Exam Day

If you choose online proctoring, plan ahead: you'll need a private room, a webcam, a stable internet connection, and a government-issued photo ID, and Pearson VUE's check-in software will scan your surroundings before the exam begins. Clear your desk of notes, secondary monitors, and phones — proctors flag and can terminate a session over items left in view. If you'd rather avoid the at-home setup entirely, a test center appointment removes most of that friction at the cost of travel time. Either way, arrive (or log in) with time to spare; late check-in can cost you exam minutes or your appointment slot altogether. During the exam itself, a running clock is visible on screen, and most candidates find the case-study sections take noticeably longer per question than the standalone multiple-choice items, so budget your 45 minutes accordingly rather than pacing every question identically.
