  2. Compare the population or damage level to the threshold - economic, aesthetic, or zero-tolerance depending on the site.
  3. Consider non-chemical options first. Sanitation, exclusion, mowing, cultural change, or a resistant cultivar may solve the problem permanently.
  4. Only then decide that a pesticide application is warranted, and record the reasoning. If a customer requests a calendar-based spray with no pest present, the professional answer is a conversation, not a tank mix.

Step 2: Read the Label Before You Buy

Step 6: Time the Application

  • Pest biology. Match the application to the vulnerable stage - early-instar larvae, seedling weeds, or the fall translocation window for perennial broadleaf weeds.
  • Wind. Aim for a steady 3 to 10 mph breeze blowing away from sensitive areas. Stop above 10 mph. Below 3 mph, suspect a temperature inversion.
  • Inversions. Clear, calm evenings and early mornings; ground fog, dust, or smoke hanging in a flat layer; sound carrying unusually far. Do not spray.

Step 8: Pre-Job Equipment and PPE Walkthrough
