Registering for the PA-CAT

Registration is handled online at pa-cat.com, the official PA-CAT website operated by Exam Master. You create an account, pay the $257 fee (which includes the standard test-center fee), and then schedule your seat. The exam is delivered through two channels: the Pearson VUE test-center network and Pearson online proctoring, which lets you sit the exam from a remote location under live remote supervision. Exam Master publishes no PA-CAT-specific count of participating centers, so plan on checking seat availability near you rather than assuming a nearby site. Both channels deliver the identical 240-item, 4-hour exam and cost the same $257, so the choice is logistical, not content-related.

Scheduling Strategy

The Bulletin of Information, rev. 20240815 requires you to register at least 30 days before your desired test date. Popular dates — especially those aligned with program application deadlines — fill quickly, and registering late both reduces the likelihood of securing your preferred date and can trigger late registration fees. Plan backward from your earliest program deadline using the score-release cycle, not a guess: Exam Master processes scores on the 20th of each month and posts them to your Candidate Score Portal by the 1st of the following month, then sends official scores directly to the programs you have selected. A test taken on February 3, for example, falls in the window closing February 20 and is reported by March 1. A reasonable rule is to sit the PA-CAT at least 8 to 10 weeks before your earliest program deadline so a full processing cycle — plus a retake cycle if you need one — fits before the deadline.

Test Day: What to Expect

Arrive at the test center 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. The full appointment is roughly 4.5 hours, which includes a 15-minute on-screen tutorial before the scored exam begins. The tutorial walks you through navigation, marking items for review, the on-screen calculator (where permitted), and the timing display. The 4-hour exam clock starts after the tutorial; the tutorial time is separate and does not consume your 4 hours. Use the tutorial deliberately even if you have practiced the interface — it is the safest moment to confirm that your scratch paper, calculator, and navigation work the way you expect.

Identification Requirements

You must present one primary government-issued ID that contains both your photograph and your signature, and that is unexpired. Acceptable examples include a valid passport, a state-issued driver's license, or a state-issued non-driver ID. The name on the ID must match the name you used to register. Secondary IDs may be requested in some circumstances, but a single compliant primary ID is the baseline. If your ID is expired, does not bear both photo and signature, or shows a name that does not match your registration, you risk being denied admission without refund.

Prohibited Items and Security

All personal items — phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, wallets, bags, notes, hats, outerwear, and food — must be stored in a designated secure area before you enter the testing room. You may not access them during the exam or during any break. Phone noise or any attempt to access a prohibited device is grounds for invalidation of your exam, meaning your results will not be reported and your fee will not be refunded. The test center may provide a small locker for storage, but policies vary by site, so travel light. You will be observed throughout the session, whether at a physical test center or under online proctoring, and your screen and workspace may be recorded for security review.

Accommodations and Fee Assistance

Candidates with documented disabilities may request special accommodations, subject to prior approval. Common accommodations include 1.5x or 2x time (i.e., 6 hours or 8 hours instead of 4), extended breaks, a separate testing room, or assistive technology. Requests must be submitted with supporting documentation before scheduling, and approval timelines can extend several weeks, so begin the accommodation request early. The linear timeline above compresses a long day into its decision points. The most controllable steps — arriving early, presenting a valid ID, and securing your phone — happen before the clock starts; the riskiest single mistake is a prohibited-device violation, which can void the entire attempt. Plan your logistics the night before: ID, directions, travel time, and a plan for storing your phone. For online proctoring, the analogous preparation is your room environment: a quiet, bare-walled space, a cleared desk, a wired connection if possible, and a government-issued ID held ready for the remote proctor's camera check.

Pacing and Breaks During the 4-Hour Window

The 4-hour exam clock runs continuously once the tutorial ends, and there is no scheduled mid-exam break. You may step away to the restroom or take an optional break at your own discretion, but the clock does not stop while you do, so every minute off the station is a minute not spent on items. With 240 items in 240 minutes, your effective pace is about one minute per item — comfortable for many knowledge-level items, tight for application items that require reading a short scenario and reasoning through it. Build pacing discipline during practice: if a single item has consumed more than roughly 90 seconds without a clear path to the answer, mark it for review, select your best-guess option, and move on. Returning later with fresh eyes is usually faster than grinding in place, and because there is no penalty for guessing, a flagged item left at a best guess is never blank. Save any optional break for the second half of the exam, when fatigue peaks, and keep it to a few minutes so the remaining clock still covers the remaining items.
