Personal protective equipment is how you keep concentrated and diluted pesticide off skin, out of eyes, and out of the lungs while you mix, load, apply, and repair equipment. In Oklahoma that work happens at very different sites: a Category 3A ornamental-and-turf tank fill behind a golf-course maintenance shop, a Category 6 right-of-way spray along a turnpike or power-line corridor, and a Category 7A general-pest job inside a restaurant or apartment, no farther than three feet from the structure for the outdoor strip that category allows. The exposure pattern changes with the site, but the selection rule does not. Read the Precautionary Statements on the product you are about to use, then wear at least what that label names for the task you are about to do.
The label is the minimum. You may add a faceshield over goggles, elbow-length gloves, or a chemical-resistant hat the label does not mention. You may not drop an item the label requires because the job looks short, the weather is hot, or a coworker says the crew never wears an apron. Wearing less than labeled PPE is both a safety failure and a misuse of the product. Heat strain from extra layers is a real Oklahoma summer problem; Chapter 6 covers heat illness. Do not solve heat by stripping required PPE. Solve it with scheduling, hydration, rest, and shade while still meeting the label.
Work clothes, coveralls, and chemical-resistant suits
Work clothes are a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and socks. They are the starting barrier for almost every handling job. Under the federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS), those four items are not classified as PPE, even though you still must wear them when the label says so. Tightly woven fabric slows splash better than a thin T-shirt. Collar fastened, no holes, no rolled sleeves. Keep this set of clothes for pesticide work, and do not wear them home as family laundry (Section 7.3).
Coveralls are a second, loose-fitting one-piece or two-piece garment that covers the body except the head, hands, and feet. They go over work clothes. Woven cotton or twill coveralls and many disposable nonwoven coveralls reduce the chance that concentrate reaches your street clothes and then your vehicle or house. They are not automatically chemical-resistant. A disposable dust coverall that breathes well in a Tulsa turf shop may stop light mist and still wick an emulsifiable-concentrate (EC) splash straight through to the shirt underneath.
A chemical-resistant suit is a higher bar. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) treats chemical-resistant as preventing any measurable movement of the pesticide through the material during the intended use. Breakthrough depends on contact time, concentration, temperature, and the product, including its solvent, not only the active ingredient. Suits built or coated with materials such as barrier laminate, butyl, nitrile, neoprene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or Viton last only as long as that combination stays intact. Taped seams, covered zippers, and elastic cuffs matter. Inspect before every mix: pinholes, chalking, stiffness, and discoloration are retirement signs, not cosmetics.
When a label requires coveralls, work clothes alone do not satisfy it. When a label requires a chemical-resistant suit, ordinary coveralls do not satisfy it. Do not talk yourself into a downgrade because the restaurant is air-conditioned or the right-of-way mix is already in the tank.
The same label often splits PPE by task. Mixers and loaders handle concentrate. Applicators may handle a water-diluted spray. People who clean strainers, change nozzles, or rinse a boom often get the mixer/loader list again because they re-contact concentrate and tank mix at high volume. Research summarized in the National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Manual found that mixers received most dermal exposure on the hands (about 85 percent) and forearms (about 13 percent), and that chemical-resistant gloves cut measured exposure dramatically. Chemical-resistant gloves, footwear, and aprons
Choose gloves from the label, not from the bin that happens to be on the truck. Labels for solid or water-based products commonly require waterproof gloves. Labels for liquids with solvents other than water specify chemical-resistant materials. Older labels may point you to EPA chemical-resistance categories A through H and the National Core selection chart instead of naming a polymer. Newer labels more often list acceptable materials in words. Either way, the solvent package—not a familiar brand of green nitrile—decides what is highly resistant.
Rubber glove ratings on the EPA/National Core chart assume about 14 mil thickness, except polyethylene and barrier laminate, which are rated as manufactured. Thinner exam-style nitrile is not a substitute for 14-mil chemical-resistant nitrile. Unlined gloves only: flocking and cotton liners hold liquid against skin. Do not use leather, canvas, or ordinary cotton knit gloves for liquid pesticides. (Some fumigants are a labeled exception that call for cotton or leather; Oklahoma fumigation is Category 7C, not 7A.)
Use this National Core / EPA glove chart as a study map. High means highly chemical-resistant for that solvent category: rinse at breaks and clean or replace at the end of the work period. Moderate means clean or replace within an hour or two of contact. Slight means clean or replace within about 10 minutes of contact. None means do not wear that material when contact is possible. Barrier laminate and Viton show up as high-resistance options across more solvent categories than nitrile; that does not mean one glove works for every tank mix.

Chemical-resistant footwear is typically unlined rubber that covers the ankle. Leather work boots and canvas shoes absorb spray and cannot be reliably decontaminated; do not treat them as chemical-resistant. Wear pant legs outside the boots so runoff does not funnel into the cuff. On rough right-of-way terrain, regulations allow leather only when labeled chemical-resistant footwear will not survive the ground—and those leather boots then stay dedicated pesticide boots, not street shoes.
A chemical-resistant apron covering from mid-chest to the knees is the usual extra layer for mixing, loading, spill cleanup, and equipment cleaning. Turf and right-of-way ECs splash at the inductor. Indoor 7A concentrates splash at a measuring cup over a five-gallon bucket. The apron is for those moments, even if you will take it off before you walk a boom or crack-and-crevice a baseboard.
Eyewear, headgear, and Oklahoma task examples
When a label requires protective eyewear, WPS-acceptable choices are goggles, a faceshield, safety glasses with front, brow, and temple protection, or a full-face respirator. They are not interchangeable in every exposure. Safety glasses with side protection help with flying granules and low splash. They do not seal against mist. Goggles that are splash- and spray-rated belong in high-exposure mist, fog, aerosol, and air-blast conditions, including many indoor 7A space treatments. Faceshields add face coverage for mix/load splash; they do not replace goggles when droplets can come from below or the side unless the label allows a faceshield alone. Ordinary prescription glasses and sunglasses are not protective eyewear.
Headgear for overhead exposure must be chemical-resistant: a wide-brim chemical-resistant hat or a hood. Cotton ball caps, felt, straw, and leather sweatbands absorb spray and then dose the scalp for the rest of the day. Right-of-way work under power lines, flagging, and spraying up a highway cut are classic overhead jobs. Tuck an unused hood inside the neckline so it does not collect product.

Mixing and loading. A Category 3A technician measuring an EC growth regulator into a golf-course spray tank needs whatever gloves, eyewear, apron, and footwear the mix/load column lists—usually stricter than the application column. Keep a clean spare pair of gloves at the pad. If liquid gets inside a glove, stop, wash, and replace; a soaked cotton liner against skin is an exposure event, not a badge of a hard morning.
Turf and right-of-way application. Walking a wet fairway or a weedy fence line soaks pant cuffs and boot tops. Chemical-resistant boots and pants over the boot matter more than they do on a dry parking-lot spray. Category 6 crews adding drift-prone high-boom work still wear the applicator PPE on that label; wind does not waive gloves.
Category 7A indoor. Crack-and-crevice in a kitchen, aerosol in a drop-ceiling void, or dust in a wall void can surround the face with particles. Goggles beat a faceshield for fog. A woven cap under a service hat is still an absorbent hat. Do not treat the indoor setting as automatically lower PPE; confined air can raise inhalation and ocular exposure even when gallons applied are small.
