1.1 REACT Scope, Components & Agency Decisions
Key Takeaways
Comprehensive adult corrections testing covers Video Human Relations, Reading, Count, and Incident Observation and Report Writing.
NTN lists approximately two hours for the comprehensive battery; it does not publish component weights or a total item count on its public description.
Hiring departments choose scoring standards and additional selection requirements.
Select eligible department jobs before testing; adding jobs afterward is restricted by NTN’s candidate FAQ.
Identify the exam before planning your study
REACT is the adult corrections testing system described by National Testing Network (NTN). This independent guide by OpenExamPrep prepares the skills in NTN’s Adult Corrections (Comprehensive) description. The distinction matters: NTN also lists Adult Corrections (Express), which uses written situational judgment scenarios and includes a Role Fitness Questionnaire. A similarly named appointment can therefore require different preparation. Read the exam name in your candidate account and the hiring department’s notice before scheduling.
Adult corrections is also distinct from NTN’s juvenile corrections and police tests. Do not import another battery’s report-writing time, number of video viewings, physical test, or passing score. The current comprehensive description gives a total of approximately two hours. It does not provide a total question count, component weights, fixed component order, or detailed component time limits. Follow the instructions provided for your appointment rather than filling those gaps with third-party estimates.
Understand the four tasks
| Component | What NTN describes | What to practice here |
|---|---|---|
| Video Human Relations | Choose the best action after watching situations involving inmate supervision, public relations, and teamwork | Identify the problem, use supplied facts, compare professional responses |
| Reading | Choose the word that best completes blanks in typical training material | Grammar, context, conditions, and whole-passage meaning |
| Count | Track inmate movement within a facility through video | Define the counted area and update a running total |
| Incident Observation and Report Writing | Watch situations and write a brief report assessed for content, organization, and basic writing skills | Observe accurately, organize events, and edit sentences |
The Human Relations and Count descriptions specify continuous video items with ten seconds to answer each question. This does not establish a ten-second limit for writing a report. It also does not establish a universal note-taking rule for every component. Do not bring personal paper; use only the materials or note area the test authorizes.
Skills versus occupational knowledge
NTN states that Human Relations does not require prior experience or knowledge of policy and technical details beyond what the video supplies. Learning a state's penal code or memorizing a force ladder is therefore a poor substitute for watching carefully. A practice situation may include a rule such as “notify control before opening this door.” Apply that stated rule. Do not assume a rule from your previous employer overrides the scenario.
For example, a prompt says an officer must remain at a monitoring station while a colleague handles a routine request. An answer that sends both officers away may sound helpful but leaves the stated responsibility unattended. The reasoning comes from the given assignment, not an invented universal staffing policy. A changed scenario involving an immediate emergency may require a different comparison of options.
Passing scores belong to the department
A testing score records performance; hiring eligibility depends on the department’s requirements. NTN’s candidate FAQ says departments choose scoring standards. There is no single national passing percentage to promise here, and this guide cannot predict a score from its practice quizzes. A practice result of 85% is simply a practice result.
Build a small agency worksheet with these columns:
- Department and exact job title.
- Accepted exam and any required additional assessment.
- Published component thresholds, if supplied.
- Application deadline and deadline for active test scores.
- Additional forms or separate application requirements.
Suppose two fictional departments accept the same battery. One requires 75 on a named component; another requires 80. A result of 78 meets the first example requirement but falls short of the second. This is an illustration of different thresholds, not a claim about any actual department or score scale. Read every required component: meeting one threshold does not establish overall eligibility.
Registration and score distribution
NTN provides a way to make test results available to selected participating departments. That does not mean unrestricted forwarding after you have seen your scores. Its FAQ says candidates may add department jobs before testing; afterward, additions are limited to jobs or departments that opened since completing the test. Choose existing target jobs before your appointment, and check the current account workflow for later openings.
Pricing is also not a single verified national amount. NTN’s pricing page says it depends on test location, test type, and department job, with a detailed total shown at checkout. A department may offer fee assistance, but do not assume a waiver applies to you. Confirm eligibility and the amount before purchasing. No fee range in an old preparation article guarantees the amount in your account.
Retesting and validity
The candidate FAQ states a minimum of three months between standard computer-administered tests and one year of score availability. Three calendar months should not be converted into a blanket “90 days.” Verify your eligible date in your account. NTN also states that retesting deletes the previous scores and department jobs from the original application; you must select your desired jobs again when purchasing the new test. Plan a retest with those consequences in mind.
Use this resource effectively
The guide’s scenarios and quizzes are original teaching exercises. They are not official questions, a reproduction of the video interface, or an official scoring key. The linked local practice bank includes broader arithmetic and verbal drills; its labels do not define the official components. Reading text cannot replace practice observing moving scenes or composing a report. Combine explanation, timed skill drills, and written responses, then compare your work with the facts provided.
