10.4 Granular Calibration, Application Technique & Professionalism
Not every application comes out of a nozzle. Common granular errors
- Using the full throw width instead of the effective swath width for a rotary spreader, which under-applies badly at the swath edges.

- Proper use puts the labeled rate on the labeled target, no more and no less, with the coverage the pest requires.
- Unnecessary use is a legal application that should not have been made at all - a calendar spray when scouting showed no threshold was crossed, a broadcast treatment where a spot treatment would have worked, a second application where the first was still active.
- Misuse is placement outside what the label and rules permit - over-application, drift onto a non-target area (Pes 507), application inside a setback (Pes 502, Pes 1001), or treating an unlabeled site.
Practical placement rules that follow from this: shut off at the end of a pass rather than turning with the boom on; use a foam or GPS marker to avoid overlap and skips; treat the downwind edge first so subsequent passes move into treated ground; and adjust boom height and nozzle selection to the minimum that achieves coverage.
Cleaning up afterwards
- Rinsates from equipment cleanup are dilute pesticide. Apply them to a labeled site as part of a spray mixture or store them in a labeled container for use as diluent in the next batch of the same product.
- Clean equipment away from wells and surface water, observing the same 400/250/75-foot logic that applies to mixing and loading.
- Triple rinse the tank when changing products, especially before switching from a herbicide to any application on sensitive plants; residues of a synthetic auxin can injure a crop at concentrations far below what a rinse feels adequate for.

- Fair treatment of customers and respect for others - including neighbors who did not hire you.
- Ethical judgment - not taking shortcuts that harm a customer, a bystander, or the environment even when nobody would know.
- Being able to explain your work - what you applied, why, what the risks and benefits are, and what precautions apply. The impression you leave depends largely on your ability to answer questions from customers, neighbors, and the public.
